With the recent remake of the 1972 shocker The Last House On The Left now available on DVD, new audiences have been seeking out Wes Craven's original film. How many movies can you watch in a row before they all begin to blur into one? As I'm sure many happy yet weary attendees of the Toronto International Film Festival can testify, it's very tempting to cram as many movies as possible into every viewing period at a festival. Beyond the confines of festivals, movie fans in general want to see as many good movies as possible, and time is short.

I sat through Rainer Werner Fassbinder's epic 15 and 1/2 hour Berlin Alexanderplatz during a very long night and a morning at a theater and felt drained, both physically and emotionally; I've watched seven movies in a row at Fantastic Fest and loved every moment; I've sat through eight movies back to back to back on videocassette in one day while on vacation. Lately, though, I find I'm lucky if I can watch even two movies in a row without interruption. »

I want things to stay the way they always were. This is insane, because they weren't that way in the first place. I see friends who have grown older, and want them to grow younger. In Cannes, I look around and see a new building where an old one was. A new franchise store where once there was a bookshop, or a little cafe, or a woman who thought she could make a living selling flowers. Here was a store where I bought my papers every morning, and Tintin comics so I could improve my reading French. Now it is a Häagen-Dazs, which has splendid ice cream but is a company name made of words in no known language.

I would take my newspapers to a little cafe nearby named Le Claridge. That was when all the action in Cannes was down at the other end of the Croisette, huddled »

SXSW 2009: "How Did We Get Away With That?"

"This movie's a comedy, I guess," director Jody Hill said in his introduction to "Observe and Report," the Seth Rogen-starring entry into the burgeoning mall cop genre. If Hill wasn't quite certain about what he had on his hands before the film played to a packed Paramount Theater, he could rest easy after the "weird-ass" character study pretty much killed it (both figuratively and all too literally at times, as Alison Willmore noted in her review on Indie Eye).
