Exclusive: A Night with The Wicker Man / The Wicker Tree Footage Premiere Report

11 November 2009 1:00 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Director Robin Hardy was present for a screening of his 1973 film The Wicker Man and a 10-minute clip of his upcoming feature The Wicker Tree at the 92nd St. Y in Tribeca on All Hallows Eve. Once heralded as the “Citizen Kane of Horror Films,” by Cinefantastique Magazine, The Wicker Man remains relevant today with its nod towards an outwardly polite and perfect community obfuscating malignant religious fanaticism and featuring the age-old fight between pagans and Christians.

The Wicker Man follows the good Police Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) as he attempts to uncover the whereabouts of a missing girl last seen on Summerisle in Scotland, a beautiful, private island filled with song, ritual, and customs from a time long, long ago. Howie bears witness to many instances of bizarre behavior: outdoor orgies under a moonlit sky; a naked woman in a cemetery, weeping with her chest pressed against her beloved »

Mr. October: Dani Filth

3 October 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Either you’re a Cradle of Filth fan, or you’re not, but even if you don’t listen to the music of the amazing metal band fronted by Dani Filth (sort of a cross between a musician, an evil warlock, and a British person), you won’t be able to deny Dani’s filthy charm. The dark enforcer of heavy metal and all things darkness has a surprisingly funny side to go along with his incontrovertible sex appeal. In 2003 he voiced the "Dominator" in the feature-length animated film of the same name and starred in the horror film Cradle of Fear. You can hear his collaborative work with Claudio Simonetti and the band Daemonia on the soundtrack of the Argento horror film The Mother of Tears. Now Dani’s latest creation, The Gospel of Filth, is causing us to get our panties in a tizzy. This collection of essays on the occult, »

Sellers Wracked With Worry During Ekland Marriage

31 July 2009 5:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Legendary comedian/actor Peter Sellers was plagued by insecurities over his marriage to Britt Ekland - and was terrified the blonde beauty would dump him for someone else.

The late star's fears are revealed in a previously unseen letter he wrote to his wife in March 1964, three weeks after their whirlwind wedding.

The note, written while Ekland was abroad filming a movie, is part of a private memorabilia collection which is set to go to auction in Wiltshire, England next month.

Sellers confesses his worries that Ekland would have an affair while she was away, admitting he couldn't understand why such a beautiful woman would want to be with an ordinary man like him.

He writes, "I have a dreadful fear that you might leave me. I love you so desperately, that I find it very difficult to understand why you married me. You who are the most lovely thing in the whole world. What do you see in me? I'm not handsome. I'm not tall. I'm not special in any way. Without a doubt I am a raving idiot and I ought to have my head examined."

Ekland was filming Guns at Batasi with John Leyton and the pair had kissed at a previous screen test - and Sellers was terrified his wife might leave him for the handsome actor.

He adds, "I thought of something an actor once said to me, that he always had to become involved with the woman he worked with otherwise it didn't look real. The thought of this made me break out in a cold sweat and want to be sick."

The couple went on to have a daughter, Victoria, but divorced in 1968 after four years of marriage.

Sellers died in 1980 aged 54 after suffering a heart attack. »

Filming of 'Wicker Tree' Begins

20 July 2009 2:50 AM, PDT | ESplatter.com | See recent ESplatter news »

It was once called "Cowboys for Christ." Now Robin Hardy's follow up to his 1973 Christopher Lee starrer "The Wicker Man" has a name that ties it more to that classic film: "The Wicker Tree." Somehow a Wicker Tree just doesn't seem quite as menacing as a burning wicker man. The Edinburgh Times reports that filming has officially started. Filming for a sequel to cult horror movie The Wicker Man has begun around Edinburgh. The cast and crew of The Wicker Tree will shooting at locations including Haddington, the Pentland Hills and Penicuik House. The film features rising American star Brittania Nicol, and comes 36 years after Edward Woodward and Britt Ekland starred in the original film.. . . . »

DVD Playhouse—June 2009

By

Allen Gardner

The International (Sony) An Interpol agent (Clive Owen) joins forces with a Manhattan D.A. (Naomi Watts) to bring down an arms dealing ring and a corrupt global banking cartel that’s funding them. Superlative thriller was oddly ignored by critics and audiences alike, but expertly blends intelligence (courtesy screenwriter Eric Warren Singer’s masterfully-crafted script) and full-throttle action (director Tom Tykwer stages one of the great film shoot-outs in New York’s iconic Guggenheim Museum), making this dynamite thriller reminiscent of the best work from masters such as John Frankenheimer and Robert Aldrich. Armin Mueller-Stahl is wonderful as a world-weary covert op. Bonuses: Extended scene; Featurettes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

The Jack Lemmon Film Collection(Sony) Five films from the two-time Oscar winning actor, focusing on his early career: Phfft! is a zippy comedy from 1954, one of Lemmon’s earliest films, in which »

Wanted: Peckinpah, Vincent Price And The Wicker Man

23 January 2009 5:16 PM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Are you going to do special features on any of the following films ?

1. Dr Phibes and Dr Phibes Rises Again

2. Theatre of Blood

3. The Wicker Man

4. Straw Dogs

Thanks,

Bill Kelly

Retro responds: All good suggestions, Bill - but we're ahead of you. Issue #2 features an article by Caroline Munro on the making of the Dr. Phibes films starring Vincent Price. Issue #3 features an 18 page tribute to Sam Peckinpah (though it primarily focused on The Wild Bunch and Major Dundee). However, issue #10 has an insightful article called The Unseen Peckinpah which covers scenes from Straw Dogs that did not end up in the final cut. We hope to get to Theatre of Blood and The Wicker Man in due course. In fact, our columnist John Exshaw recently met with Christopher Lee in London and conducted what is probably the most in-depth interview about his films and career. As Christopher puts »
