Where My Heart Lies: My Favorite Actors. And Yours?

29 August 2009 10:05 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

instead of a tues top 10, a 25.

I did this once for the actresses but I'm always giving the ladies their due. So, here's to the silver screen men that have enriched my movie-life. I admit up front that I haven't investigated Classic Hollywood actors to the extent I've investigated their leading ladies, so this list is highly subject to change the more old movies I see in my life.

Nathaniel's 25 all time favorite leading men

In no particular order and extremely subject to change

Gene Kelly | Tony Leung Chiu-Wai |

Montgomery Clift | Jeff Bridges | Paul Newman

Jude Law | James Dean | William Holden | Gene Hackman | Rock Hudson

Jack Lemmon | Gael García Bernal | Ewan McGregor | James Stewart | Gregory Peck

Steve Martin | Marlon Brando | Jack Nicholson | Burt Lancaster | Richard Burton

Brad Pitt | Johnny Depp | Cary Grant | Warren Beatty | William Hurt

Because sometimes you just want to name names

The list is not comprehensive, not set in stone, »

Win a VIP trip to Hollywood with X-Men Origins: Wolverine

21 April 2009 3:50 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

There are seemingly countless ways you could celebrate the 29th May release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. You could clock some serious hours at the gym in a bid to buff up like the muscled mutant played by People magazine’s sexiest man, Hugh Jackman. You could reject your razor and cultivate some mutton chops worthy of the hairy hero (more on cinematic sideburns later in the week Boxwishers) or you could simply enter this fantastic competition which could earn you the trip of a lifetime to Hollywood. We know which one we prefer…

This exciting competition will see you and a buddy jet off to Lax airport and stay three nights at the famous Spanish-style 4-star Roosevelt Hotel (rumoured to be haunted by former Tinseltown inhabitants Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift) on Hollywood Boulevard. Also thrown into the mix is a swanky dinner at either Stk (L.A. Steakhouse) or »

Playing it Straight

While Sean Penn’s recent Best Actor Oscar win for Milk helped bring Harvey Milk’s message to a wide audience — both from the increased visibility of the film and from Penn’s moving acceptance speech — the occasion marked another instance of a Hollywood tradition: a gay character played by a heterosexual actor.

Penn, like Tom Hanks (Philadelphia [1993]) and William Hurt (Kiss of the Spider Woman [1985]) before him, was praised for his “bravery” for taking on the role and even — eek! — kissing another man.

Gay actors, on the other hand, get no such credit for playing gay roles; let’s not forget the year that Rupert Everett’s hilarious supporting turn in My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) was ignored by the Academy, with the implication that queer thespians need merely show up to play queer characters, with no actual acting involved. (To add insult to injury, that same year saw »

77 Appropriate Ways to Celebrate Elizabeth Taylor's Birthday

27 February 2009 10:07 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Be great. Be beautiful. Ride a horse. Get married. Get divorced. Act like a total diva. Wear something spectacularly sexy, preferrably white. Make people want more.

Befriend Michael Jackson. Watch Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? again. Watch National Velvet. Watch A Place in the Sun. Be highly quotable. Get married. Flaunt every piece of jewelry you own. Donate to an AIDS charity. Nurse a sick friend. Get divorced. Show everyone your wicked sense of humor. Fall in love with Montgomery Clift in glorious black and white (any of his movies will do). Ask your best friend to refer to you as "Bessie Mae" for the rest of the day. Get married. Scream "I was the slut of all time!" at the top of your lungs. Survive the loss of someone you loved no matter how hard that is to do. Pretend you've won an Oscar. And another. Drink people under the table. »

Gray Credits Phoenix With Saving Two Lovers

12 February 2009 5:40 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Filmmaker James Gray pinned all hope of getting his new film Two Lovers a big-screen release on Joaquin Phoenix - because if the retiring actor had turned down the main part, the movie would never have been made.

The director, who has previously worked with Phoenix on 2000's The Yards and 2007's We Own The Night, penned the project's lead role with his close pal in mind.

And Gray is grateful to the Walk The Line star for choosing to take on the role - the last film Phoenix made before announcing his plans to quit Hollywood for good - because his performance reminds the filmmaker of late movie star Montgomery Clift.

In a MovieMaker Magazine article paying tribute to the Oscar nominee, Gray writes, "I wrote Two Lovers knowing that if Joaquin didn’t want to do it it would never get made. The role was created for him: A tormented soul, struggling, lost, lonely and, finally, beautiful and heartbreaking. Who else could do it? Who else would?

"Thankfully for me, he said yes, and the shoot was the happiest of the three (movies we made). ...He was liberated. The result is work that seems to my eyes eerily redolent of Montgomery Clift at his best." »

Eleven Gay Historical Figures Worthy of the "Milk" Treatment

4 February 2009 8:14 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Whatever you think of Milk, there’s no denying that the Oscar-nominated biopic is putting a long-overdue spotlight on the life of Harvey Milk, allowing much of the mainstream audience to learn about his singular achievements for the very first time.

But why stop there? Now that Milk has proven that stirring gay life stories can appeal to more than just a gay audience, Hollywood should think about making movies about the following legends. We’ll even help them decide which to make first by throwing in a rating of 1-5 Harveys for each story’s eventual Oscar bait-ability. That should help land some big name stars.

Montgomery Clift

Who he was: Gorgeous leading man of the 1950s (From Here to Eternity [1953], A Place in the Sun [1951]) who led a torturously closeted existence in Hollywood. Survived a somewhat disfiguring car accident during the filming of Raintree County (1957) opposite Elizabeth Taylor, »

TCM: Private Screenings—Interview With Ernest Borgnine

26 January 2009 10:15 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Along with discussing TCM’s upcoming “31 Days of Oscar” and reminiscing on Arlene Dahl, Robert Osborne and I talked about Ernest Borgnine, with whom he recently taped an interview for TCM’s “Private Screenings”, which will premiere on Monday, January 26, 2009, 5:00Pm (Pt), followed by a four-film tribute. Borgnine, a venerable 92-year-old, is the oldest living Academy Award®-winning actor, now that Charlton Heston has passed away. Osborne and I exchanged a few comments regarding this Hollywood legend and then a few hours later I was offered the chance to share a few minutes with Ernie as well.

* * * Robert Osborne: [Ernie] may be matched with Olivia DeHaviland because she’s 92 as well. Jennifer Jones, I believe, is a couple of years younger. I must say that—knowing both of them—Borgnine and Olivia, is that they are both examples of how great it can be to live that long if you have good genes. »
