DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

The Taking of Pelham 123 Review

11 June 2009 9:03 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short version: If you’re a fan of Travolta and Denzel you’ll probably like The Taking of Pelham 123.

Screen Rant reviews The Taking of Pelham 123

The Taking of Pelham 123 is a remake of the highly regarded 1974 film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, which starred old-school actors Walter Matthau, Martin Balsam, Hector Elizando and Earl Hindman. I will confess that it’s probably been at least 20 years since I’ve seen it and don’t remember much about it - but I plan on renting it very soon to watch it again.

Like in the original, the story revolves around a handful of men who hijack a New York City subway train in an attempt to extort millions of dollars from the city using hostages as leverage. Denzel Washington plays Walter Garber,  a console dispatcher at the rail control center of the NYC subway who happens to be »

Retro Cafe: 'The Taking of Pelham One Two Three'

4 June 2009 9:50 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Modern thrillers, and action films to an extent, seem to me to take themselves pretty seriously. I love the 'Bourne' films, which are probably the new benchmark of modern thriller filmmaking, but there seems very little time taken in contemporary thrillers to give the audience little respites of humor, even in the relationships between characters.

Action-thrillers from the 1970s seem to me to have a much greater sense of fun and levity to them. A film like The French Connection, doubtless as gritty and downright thrilling as any film you will ever see, has a huge number of terrific lines and moments between the lead characters that bring them down to earth and away from Superman-like invincibility.

Then there's The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. Not forgotten by any means, but there’s no doubt that it has been overtaken in the public's collective memory by the more revolutionary »

Rare Movie Alert! TCM Airs "The Anderson Tapes" Tonight

14 May 2009 11:18 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Turner Classic Movies (North America) is keeping their Friday night Sean Connery tributes on a hot streak. Tonight, for example, the network screens back-to-back showings of the James Bond flicks You Only Live Twice and Diamonds Are Forever, followed by a rare telecast of Sidney Lumet's 1971 thriller The Anderson Tapes which casts Connery as a master thief who devises an outlandish plan to "rob the guts" out of a New York luxury apartment building over Labor Day weekend. The film was Connery's first notable hit outside of the Bond canon, enjoying favorable reviews and substantial box-office. Not only is the Great Scot in top form, but the film benefits from a spectacular supporting cast including Dyan Cannon (stripping to her bra for a memorable bedroom scene), Ralph Meeker, comedian Alan King (excellent as mob boss), Christopher Walken (in his first feature film), Stan Gottlieb as a geriatric con man, »

Chicago – Audrey Hepburn and Dane Cook. You won’t find that kind of variety too many places outside of HollywoodChicago’s DVD & Blu-Ray Round-Up. From serial killers to musicals to a British import, this week’s round-up features an exciting variety of titles.

Some of these are agreed-upon classics, while at least one features arguably the most critically despised actor alive. And before you see a certain 3D horror movie this weekend, you should check out the available special edition.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Funny Face,” “Little Britain USA,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” and “My Bloody Valentine”. Try and find a lineup that diverse anywhere other than the round-up.

(Check out the first edition of the round-up, the second edition, and a few Blu-Ray Round-Ups here and here.)

All of these titles were released on January 13th, 2009.

Review: 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' Centennial Collection

13 January 2009 12:29 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Paramount Home Video concludes their Audrey Hepburn review with the fifth entry in their Centennial Collection, the classic Breakfast At Tiffany's, on sale today.  It’s interesting that they’re celebrating a century but the first five releases are all from the same era, the 1950s and while this was released in 1961, still has that same look and feel.

The film has withstood the test of time very nicely given the loving touch of director Blake Edwards who oversaw this adaptation of Truman Capote’s novella and made it uniquely his own.  In the prose, Holly Golightly never sang “Moon River” nor did she really have a happy ending.  Characters differ between story and screenplay and by now, most people know Capote always envisioned Marilyn Monroe in the lead. He was crushed when Hepburn was cast.

While Monroe would have been good in many ways, this was all about style and elegance, »
