DVD News: 'Torso', 'Island of the Fishmen', 'Horrible' Get Release Dates

Starring Ms. Ringo Starr, Barbara Bach, in her greatest horror role, "Island of the Fishmen" saw a VHS release in the U.S. under the title "Screamers." Long unavailable, the film is finally getting a proper DVD release from Mya Communications on June 30. Mya Communications is proving itself to be an awesome label, already having announced "Legend of Blood Castle" for May. The company is also releasing Joe D'Amato's "Horrible" on June 30 too. »

Simon Says, slitherin’ snakes and more DVD news

Crispin Glover fans have no doubt been wondering what happened to Simon Says, the indie slasher opus starring the eccentric actor as homicidal twins, which was made nearly three years ago and has only made a few festival appearances in North America since. Well, the wait is finally over.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release the William Dear-written/directed flick on DVD June 23. The cast also includes From Within’s Margo Harshman and Kelly Blatz, Greg Cipes, Carrie Finklea, Kelly Vitz, Artie Baxter, veteran actor Bruce Glover and Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively along with her siblings Lori and Robyn and their father Ernie, and the disc will contain a widescreen transfer with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, a filmmaker audio commentary and possibly other extras. Retail price is $26.98.

The Unseen (DVD Review)

While MGM’s recent Pumpkinhead DVD celebrates one of Stan Winston’s greatest triumphs outside of his usual role of FX creator, this new disc reveals a chapter in his filmmaking history that has gone, if not unseen, than largely unacknowledged. One reason for that is the fact that while Winston shares a story billing on the actual movie with fellow makeup master Tom Burman and director Peter Foleg, the writing credits in The Unseen’s ad and press material, and thus almost all of the film’s reviews, and even the billing block on the DVD case cite Foleg and three different co-scribes (among them Texas Chainsaw Massacre veteran Kim Henkel). Add the fact that “Foleg” himself is actually a pseudonym for Danny Steinmann, who would go on to direct the fifth Friday The 13th, and there’s the clear suggestion of a creative history as tortured as any of the onscreen victims, »

John Malkovich; Larry King; Ringo Starr's wife, Barbara Bach; and baseball great Sandy Koufax were on a 162-page list released late Wednesday of clients who invested with the disgraced money manager's New York firm, a list that also included, as previously reported, Kevin Bacon and Steven Spielberg's charitable Wunderkinder Foundation. Madoff, currently under house arrest in Manhattan, is reportedly cooperating with authorities after admitting to losing $50 billion in an alleged Ponzi scheme that bilked individuals and businesses alike.
