Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.07 "Red Bulls"

12 November 2009 10:36 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The big news tonight on The Mentalist episode "Red Bulls" is that Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Agent Sam Bosco (Terry Kinney) work together on a case. The episode begins with a tense scene involving Bosco's team, busting into an abandoned house they believe houses a kidnap victim and her captors. Guns drawn, they rush into a crowded room–populated by Agent Teresa Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) Cbi team, including Jane. After a tense moment of adrenaline and demanding to know what the other is doing there, Jane finally gets them all to lower their guns.

Turns out Lisbon and her team were asked to investigate a report of a dead body in the abandoned house. The body turns out to be a young man who had been kidnapped years earlier. Cbi boss Minelli (Gregory Itzin) agrees with Jane that the coincidences are too great between the two kidnap cases, and »

Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.06 "Black Gold and Red Blood"

5 November 2009 11:19 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Tonight on The Mentalist, "Black Gold and Red Blood", Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) once again defies people's expectations. After Agent Bosco (Terry Kinney) discovers the bug that Jane planted in his office, he has Jane arrested. As usual, Jane isn't remorseful in the least bit and doesn't seem to be all that fearful about jail time. Turning down Bosco's deal to quit the Cbi, Jane heads off to the penitentiary. Not considering himself a cop, Jane refuses protective custody and gets put in with the general population.

Once we get a look at Jane's murderer roommate, if we weren't already thinking it, we get the idea Jane may have made a serious error. After all, Jane is very pretty and not at all violent, which is not the best combination in prison. Though Jane makes friends with his cellmate with a little psychotherapy, he realizes he may have been a »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: 'The Mentalist' and 'Castle,' tricks and treats

30 October 2009 4:07 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I love Halloween episodes. They’re less cheesy than Valentine’s Day drivel, and generally funnier than Christmas and Thanksgiving episodes (plus, we don’t have to deal with guest-star relatives). This All Hallows Eve week we got two gems: The Mentalist and Castle. Since y’all always say I give The Mentalist and Criminal Minds short shrift, I’ll start with the faux-psychic (particularly since there was no meeting of the Minds this week). Anybody who’s been watching procedurals as long as we have (I know you’re out there, McMillan & Wife fans) has to appreciate the occasional »

Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.05 "Red Scare"

29 October 2009 10:19 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The Mentalist "Red Scare" begins with architect Alan Foster (David Kilde) working alone, late at night in an historic home. He hears a noise, then sees flashing lights behind a set of French doors. He moves closer, the doors open, and we see a shocked and frightened look on his face.

The next scene begins with Foster's body on the ground, dead after falling–or being thrown–out the upstairs window. The Cbi team arrive on the scene, and thus begins the spooky Halloween ghost story installment of The Mentalist.

Deputy Nick Fisher of the local small town police informs the Cbi that they've never had a violent crime before. All the players, even the deputy, seem suspicious as the plot moves on. Agent Lisbon (Robin Tunney) brings in a local thief who was on the property stealing construction tools the night of the murder. The thief saw Foster's wife »

Recap — The Mentalist 2.01 "Redemption"

16 October 2009 12:40 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The Mentalist season two opener, "Redemption", begins with Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) arriving at a crime scene in a department store. The police officer briefing them thanks them for helping the homicide department out on their case load, and then proceeds to mock Jane for "that Esp crap".

Of course Jane always takes any criticism as a challenge. The officer shows them the body of a 34 year old man, and tells him that store security was able to gather up all of the people in the area at the time of the murder. Jane kneels down by the body, literally sniffing around the crime scene. Asked tauntingly by the officer if the victim told him whodunit, Jane replies with a list of facts about the victim–including that he was a ladies man, went after moneyed cougars with moderate success, and played the guitar–not well. »

Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.04 "Red Menace"

15 October 2009 10:53 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

This week on The Mentalist, episode "Red Menace", the Cbi investigate the murder of a lawyer, Gordon Hodge, who has only one client–a biker mob called the Sinner Saints. Lisbon (Robin Tunney), Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), and Jane (Simon Baker) interview the wife and son, who don't seem to know much about Hodge's shady clients, though they do enjoy the lavish lifestyle those clients provide for.

Jane and Lisbon go into the lion's den of Sinner Saints and question their leader Von McBride (Mark Pellegrino). They discover that Hodge was living the Sinner part of the biker lifestyle, partying and doing drugs. Since Hodge dodged a conviction on a drug bust, Lisbon and Jane fish with the idea of his being an informant on the Sinner Saints. McBride doesn't buy it, and doesn't bite when Jane suggests there might be another informant. McBride doesn't ruffle easily, even when an irate »

DVD Review: 'The Mentalist - The Complete First Season'

9 October 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Recently released on DVD is the first season of the most-watched new show of the 2008/2009 season, The Mentalist. Each show begins with the definition of a 'mentalist' as a master manipulator of thoughts and behavior. Simon Baker (in an Emmy nominated role) plays the title role as Patrick Jane, a consultant with the fictitious California Bureau of Investigation. Working with Cbi Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and a team of agents (Tim Kang, Owain Yeoman and Amanda Righetti), Jane uses his superb observational and mental abilities to close high profile homicide cases. But Jane wasn't always a justice seeker; he used to use his amazing abilities for self profit, posing as a celebrity psychic and preying on those that wish to utilize the skills he purported to have. He made a fortune doing this, but in the process, caught the eye of a serial killer named Red John. This nefarious »

Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.03 "Red Badge"

8 October 2009 10:39 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Tonight on The Mentalist, "Red Badge", we find out more background on how Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and Agent Bosco know each other. When a paroled pedophile named McTeer is found murdered, Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and the Cbi team find out that he was originally caught by Lisbon when she was a San Francisco police department inspector–and Bosco was her boss. Lisbon was written up as a hero in the papers, with quotes of praise from Bosco himself.

The hero turns to possible villain, however, when Lisbon's print is found on the murder weapon. Cbi boss Minnelli takes Lisbon off the McTeer case and gives it to Bosco. Though she initially denies involvement, Lisbon subsequently confesses to Jane that she actually has no recollection of Tuesday–the night the murder took place. After a disturbing meeting with the father of one of McTeer's child victims, a rattled Lisbon agrees »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: 'Three Rivers' might need some CPR

5 October 2009 1:51 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

My name is Alynda and I am an organ donor. There, now everybody knows and we don't have to go through any confusion or sticky sitches in the hospital, Three Rivers-style. What did you think of the Rivers debut, the few of you who watched it? (If you missed it, by the way, you can catch it here.) I'm still trying to decide if I'm giving it too much leeway because star Alex O'Loughlin is in my imaginary-boyfriend stable (and we're pretty serious, with his having met my mom and all). But I'll try to be objective. Let's start »

Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.02 "The Scarlet Letter"

1 October 2009 10:09 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

What better way to show the irreverent nature of Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) than to start off The Mentalist "The Scarlet Letter" with a yawn. Apparently sleeping through Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) briefing in the car, Jane awakens to find the Cbi team on a bridge in Sacramento. He's quickly briefed by Cho (Tim Kang) and Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) that a state senator's aide named Kristin Marley has been found dead underneath the bridge. Since she was rumored to be having an affair with the senator's husband, it's not clear at first whether it's a suicide or murder.

Throughout the investigation, Jane and the Cbi team find out several things about Kristin's personal life. First, that her step-brother was trying to force her into being his alibi for a car-jacking. Second, that she was a romantic who dreamed about being a senator and traveling to far-off places. She collected mementos from her travels, »

[TV] The Mentalist: The Complete First Season

30 September 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

At first glance CBS psychic crime drama The Mentalist appears to be a humorless, CSI-ified [read: formulaic, predictable] version of the USA comedies Monk and Psych. The idea is the same: extraordinarily astute, "psychic" detective helps a skeptic and sometimes-bitter police force solve crimes by making ridiculous assertions and backing them up using an absurd chain of reasoning based on evidence that only they could detect. Monk and Psych are both quality shows, so why is The Mentalst so bad? The problem is that The Mentalist isn't simply a hackneyed iteration of another show. Rather, it's a Frankenstein monster; a horrible combination of crime show elements, all of them diluted to create some kind of super-likable "light drama". When thinking about it, I imagine the creative meetings for Mentalist to be a lot like the meeting when tobacco companies came up with the idea of "light" cigarettes. Mentalist is bad for you. It's bad for your head. »

Mini Recap — The Mentalist 2.01 "Redemption"

24 September 2009 9:34 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The season premiere episode of The Mentalist, "Redemption", begins with our favorite master of observation Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) up to his old tricks. The Cbi are called in to help out the homicide department on a department store murder. Detective Lisbon (Robin Tunney) warns Jane to take his theatrical antics down a notch (or three), but Jane's never been one to listen to authority.

Jane gathers together the witnesses (suspects), and in Agatha Christie style, narrows them down with random questions and observations of their behavior. Using a trick he pulled on Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) last season, he uses the guilty party's reactions to his movements to discover the murder weapon and the killer. All in a day's work.

Back at the office, Jane and Lisbon get called on the carpet for Jane's unorthodox and unprofessional crime solving methods. Minelli (Gregory Itzin) tells them they're too focused on »

The Mentalist</i> | Photo Credits: Cliff Lipson/CBS" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />Nearly every show on TV has to deal with will-they-won't-they sexual tension between its series leads. CBS' The Mentalist is no different.

"You always want to keep the audience wanting and guessing," Robin Tunney tells TVGuide.com. "Once it happens it's very difficult to know where to go from there."

Fall TV: Get the scoop on all the new and returning shows

As California Bureau of Investigation Agent Teresa Lisbon, Tunney finds herself fighting that battle with co-star Simon Baker's Patrick Jane. Lisbon's disdain for Jane slowly gave way to flirty camaraderie, and in the Season 1 finale, Jane fatally shot a man to protect her. But that doesn't mean 'shippers should expect a wild love affair in Season 2...

Exclusive Video: Charlize Theron Discusses Her Role in The Burning Plain

18 September 2009 12:47 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Charlize Theron began her career as just another pretty face in movies like 2 Days In The Valley and The Cider House Rules, but it was her star-turning role in the Academy Award winning film, Monster that earned her not only an Oscar but also the respect of her critics and peers alike. She followed that up with a strong performance in the film In the Valley of Elah and another Oscar nomination for her work in North Country. Now, the acclaimed actress is back again with a gritty, realistic and heart-shattering performance in Guillermo Arriaga's directorial debut, "The Burning Plain. I had the opportunity to speak exclusively with Charlize Theron about her powerful new performance in the film, which opens on September 18th.

Greatest Scream Queens

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Terry Kinney Comes Aboard The Mentalist

8 July 2009 6:42 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In a story from The Hollywood Reporter Terry Kinney has been cast in a recurring role on CBS' The Mentalist.

The actor is set to be in seven episodes of the Warner Bros. TV-produced series' second season. He will play Agent Sam Bosco, a normal looking police officer with a hidden amount of shrewdness.

Bosco will run the California Bureau of Investigation's Serial Crimes Unit. He is brought in to help solve the case of the Red John serial killer. His victims include the wife and daughter of Cbi's Patrick Jane (Simon Baker). Bosco's by-the-book approach is something Jane finds hard to work with.

Further complicating things is the fact that Bosco was Teresa Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) boss at one point. Apparently, something from the past hangs over their current relationship.

CBS Picks Up Four for Fall, Reserves Four for Midseason

20 May 2009 2:11 PM, PDT | IMDb Television Blog | See recent IMDb Television Blog news »

The Mentalist, starring Robin Tunney and Simon Baker, moves to Thursdays.

(This post has been updated.)

Rare is the season that leaves CBS with many holes to fill on its schedule. The Eye boasts a solid lineup built on a foundation of procedurals as well as a strong Monday night comedy stable.  As such, the network’s selection of four series for fall — including an “NCIS” spinoff — seems relatively conservative in comparison to announcements from other networks.

The good news: “How I Met Your Mother” received official renewal, and “The Big Bang Theory” moves to the plum post- “Two and a Half Men” timeslot on Mondays.  This season’s greatest success story, “The Mentalist,” shifts to Thursdays at 10, which proved to be a trouble spot for CBS.
