Audiences Hoot The Haunting

23 July 1999 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Although several film critics and reporters are predicting that Haunting, The (1999) will top the box office this weekend, numerous writers are observing that audience reaction to the film at previews has been frightful. As Kathleen Craughwell notes in today's (Friday) Los Angeles Times: "Usually at a movie premiere, members of the audience will respond politely, if not enthusiastically, to the film out of deference to those involved in the making of the film who happen to be sitting all around them. But such was not the case at Tuesday evening's premiere of DreamWorks' Haunting, The (1999) at the Mann Village Westwood. The film... drew more hoots and howls than gasps and screams despite the presence in the theater of director Jan De Bont; stars Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lili Taylor; and DreamWorks honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg." In her review today, Jami Bernard of the New York Daily News warns that "the only howls will be ones of laughter." And, across town, Rod Dreher of the New York Post comments: "A preview audience this week hooted and giggled through much of the alleged horror picture." And Steve Murray in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes: "Thrilling it isn't, much less any fun -- though a preview audience laughed often at things that weren't intended to be funny."
