Top critics have voted Francis Ford Coppola's war movie Apocalypse Now the best film of the last 30 years.
The 1979 drama, starring Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen, is number one on a new poll celebrating 30 years of the London Film Critics' Circle Awards.
Apocalypse Now, which won Best Film at the inaugural ceremony in 1980, came ahead of Steven Spielberg's Holocaust epic Schindler's List, which was voted second best.
The Critics' Circle, the world's oldest organisation of critics, also recognised The Lives of Others, Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven and Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, which rounded out the top five respectively.
Chairman of the Film Critics' Circle Jason Solomons says, "I'm delighted that such a powerful and brilliant film as Apocalypse Now has won the enduring admiration of the London critics.
"Coppola's towering film is a worthy winner and clearly its anti-war message, monumental performances and dazzling film-making technique have stood the test of time, making it as relevant to critics today as it was when it won best film at our first awards ceremony 30 years ago."
The 30th annual London Film Critics' Circle Awards will take place on 18 February in the British capital. »

Variety has just kicked off their Awards Season series of actor-on-actor profiles, where one actor talks about how impressed or amazed they were by another actor this year. And this year there are actually some good ones, like: Ben Affleck on Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker, or Tom Cruise on Peter Sarsgaard in An Education, or Charlize Theron on Michelle Monaghan in Trucker, or Marcia Gay Harden on Robin Williams in World's Greatest Dad, or Martin Sheen on Hal Holbrook in That Evening Sun. I've chosen to feature a few that really deserve to be in the spotlight (like Sam Rockwell in Moon) this Awards Season so read on! First up, we have Bradley Cooper talking about Sam Rockwell in Duncan Jones' Moon (via Variety): "I love watching that guy act anyway and it was an inventive way to tell this story and to tell the story »

The furious way that the beautiful free flowing style which Terrence Malick has curated over his career is talked about often disguises the fact that he has made just four features and one (some people say two), rare as hens teeth, shorts. So, after only a hand full of features in 37 years what is it about the director that has celluloid lovers chomping at the bit. Until very recently there were only 2 published interviews with the modest director in existence and only a handful of photographs. His stubbornness with the press is legendary. His Tom Sawyer like trademark themes of innocents somehow lost within harsh mother nature, the beautifully paced editing and pitch perfect scores, his poetic and naturalistic voice overs and consistently jaw dropping cinematography has helped the film maker achieve a level of awe and mystery perhaps only reserved on a comparable level for one Stanley Kubrick. Lindsay Lohan's dad Michael has vowed to end their ongoing war of words if the troubled actress enters a rehabilitation program.
The Mean Girls star has threatened to file a restraining order against her estranged dad after he spoke to the press about her alleged addiction to prescription drugs.
But Lohan insists he will only back down once the 23 year old seeks professional help, telling RadarOnline.com, "As far as Lindsay is concerned, if she goes into a rehab, I will stop. But if the lies continue and the prescription drug use doesn't stop, neither will I."
Michael insists his daughter's partying lifestyle has spiralled out of control, leaving him no other choice but to stage a public intervention - just as actor Martin Sheen did when his son Charlie was battling drug problems.
He adds, "I have been trying for a year to help Lindsay with her problems privately, through Lindsay, her mom and the courts. I have the records to prove it. But when that didn't work, and the calls I was getting from (her mother) Dina, and Lindsay needed immediate attention, it was recommended to me to go public, like Martin Sheen and others did, in order to put pressure on Lindsay... I am sorry I had to take this route, but I have tried and tried to help Linds and I have been lied about long enough."
The born-again Christian even wants to obtain a conservatorship over Lindsay so he can help her regain control of her life.
He tells New Yok Post gossip column Page Six, "I am going to go to court to get a legal conservatorship to get Lindsay into rehab and finally get her off all the prescription meds. Dina is going to sit down with me and the lawyers and make things right for Lindsay. She is taking Adderol, Xanax, Paxil. She’s a beautiful girl but she looks 100 years old." »

The Lohans continue to carry out their family squabbles via the press, with Michael most recently responding to Dina and Lindsay’s request that he stop talking with an ultimatum of his own. “As far as Lindsay is concerned, if she goes into a rehab, I will stop,” he tells Radar , claiming that he has been attempting to “help” his daughter privately for a year now. “When that didn’t work, it was recommended to me to go public, like Martin Sheen and others did, in order to put pressure on Lindsay,” he says. “I am sorry I had to take this... »

Lindsay Lohan, had to deal with her father, Michael Lohan who was telling media that his daughter is using drugs. Lindsay flared up her peevish on Twitter and wrote, "My father is a lunatic & doesn't even deserve such a title since he's never been around in my life other than when he'd threaten me & my Family." She also wrote, "He should be where he has always put him self after verbally abusing and physically abusing people all my life - behind bars."
In the other hand, Michael told exclusively RadarOnline.com, "As far as Lindsay concerned, if she goes into a rehab, I will stop" and continued, "But if the lies continue and the prescription drug use doesn't stop, neither will I." Michael insisted that what he's doing is because it's the only way out to convince Lindsay for a help.
He threatened to air the tape of conversation between him and Dina Lohan, »

"The Damned United" is a "based on a true life story about sports", in fact a great one, but director Tom Hooper finds it necessary to fulfill the film with off-field drama and tension, relying very little on the actual game of soccer. The lack of on-field action isn't missed at all because there is a hypnotizing portrait of hatred being presented, and that is the film's main priority. Mr. Hooper perceives a myriad of vanities within a single human being which ultimately lead him being reduced to a man without a moral center, establishing himself solely within his own mad ambitions. This represents a tale Shakespeare or the Greeks would examine, where one man is so consumed by his own »

I was handed this scrappy-looking DVD with a partial eyeroll and a shoulder shrug. Looking at the rinky-dink website with no salient journalism information (Photos? Runtime?) caused even less excitement. A sequel to 2007's "Caesar and Otto" (No? You haven't heard of it either?), Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre looked like it was going to be porn without the porn. Imagine my elation on discovering that writer/director/producer/star Dave Campfield is talented and well-versed in the language of film.
Despite the DVD cover and website doing the movie no favors, Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre is actually a funny broad comedy, with bigger appeal than the niche horror-comedy crowd it is being marketed to. It is directed and edited with such panache that I could see it appealing to many fans of the Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler ilk who wouldn't and don't »

Box Office
After a few years in post-production, Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are took the top spot with a mighty $32.4 million over the weekend. Catering to children and adults alike, it looks like this adaptation of the children’s book might make it to the century barrier.
Law Abiding Citizen came an impressive second with $21 million. The thriller has given a boost to the careers of Jamie Fox and Gerard Butler whose last movies underperformed.
Paranormal Activity scared up $20 million from only 760 screens for a $33 million total. It looks like the sky is the limit as Halloween approaches.
Couples Retreat plunged 47% giving the comedy a weekend take of just under $18 million. »

The upcoming fifth film from perfectionist director Terrence Malick has been pushed back to an undertermined release date in 2010. Tree Of Life stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in a heartfelt story about the loss of a son's innocence and the struggle to come to grips with it into adulthood. Other than that, details on the film have remained a mystery, as the director has managed to keep a tight lid on the whole thing. Already, Malick has been in the editing room for nearly a year.
The information was released by new distributor Apparition, whose new head Bob Berny said, "It's definitely not going to come out this year... I can't tell you when it will come out."
The acclaimed director of Badlands and Days Of Heaven conceived of the story for Tree Of Life nearly thirty years ago. He has decided to accompany the film in some way »

Every day a multitude of stars wanders through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with staff members. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.
Sure, Katy Perry has been hanging out with Russell Brand at Fashion Week in Paris, but some stars have work to attend to. Take Shia Labeouf, who was at the Central Park Zoo yesterday. But he wasn't there to wave to the polar bears or pet a snow leopard. Rather, he was there working with Michael Douglas on the set of "Wall Street 2," the sequel to Oliver Stone's sequel to his own 1987 film that originally starred Douglas, Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen. The movie, which is subtitled "Money Never Sleeps," is expected to hit theaters some time in 2010 and will feature a »

Irish American actor Martin Sheen will go back to his roots with his next movie, "Stella Days." Sheen, who will star as Fr Daniel Barry, will be shooting "Stella Days" in the tiny town of Borrisokane in North Tipperary where his late mother was from. "Stella Days," which also features Stephen Rea and Romola Garai is based on a true story. The real-life Fr Barry was a priest called Fr Dean Cahill who establised a movie house called Stella Cinema in Borrisokane. The movie house, which showed films from 1957 to 1967, was housed in the Clarke Memorial Hall which still stands. In the movie, Sheen's character is struggling with his conscience. He fears that he has lost his vocation and searches for redemption by reconciling his own passion for movies with his oboligation to his flock by setting up the Stella Cinema.... »

Zombieland eats the competition; Josh Brolin is the new Sean Penn in Cartel; Jessica Alba is added to Fockers; Kim and Kelly get Adjusted; Sarsgaard joins Cruise and Diaz; Sheen, Unger and Nesbitt are Shown The Way by Emilio Estevez.
Zombieland exceeded expectations and managed to reach number one of the top ten at the box office this week. The Woody Harrelson stars in Zombieland and it should make about $25 million this weekend. That’s about a million more than its reported production budget!
Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs should manage another $16 million or so giving the animated film a good $82 million total.
Toy Story I and 2 3D was third giving the animated combo a solid $13 million. Considering that these puppies have been available on DVD for over a decade bodes well for Toy Story 3 3D when it hits next year.

-- You know what's pretty crazy? This trailer for "The Crazies," the upcoming remake of George A. Romero's classic horror film. The movie, directed by Breck Eisner ("Sahara"), focuses on a Midwestern town that's gone bizonkers due to a mysterious toxin in the water supply. Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell play the lead roles. (Apple)
-- John Woo is set to bring his Chinese action epic "Red Cliff" stateside on November 20, 2009, and there's a brand new trailer to prove it. I'm still wondering how he'll fit his trademark hero-with-two-pistols into the period piece, but I'm keeping an open mind. (Apple)
-- Remember that horrifying Discovery Channel special about Earth's future millions of years down the line, where humanity is gone and scary hybrid creatures have taken over?
