My high school reunion wound up being not at all traumatic, so I'm not certainly not going to let the week's movies get me down.
This week marks the long-awaited premiere of Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, adapted (by Jonze and novelist Dave Eggers) from the beloved children's book by gay author and illustrator Maurice Sendak. I can imagine audiences being widely divided over this movie — after all, even the book has had its detractors over the years — and I can say that I definitely liked it without ever really loving it.
Max Records stars as Max, the wolf-suited boy who misbehaves and runs off to an island inhabited by monsters who make him their king. The movie offers delightful visuals, a sweetly plaintive score by Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Carter Burwell, and terrific performances by Records and Catherine Keener, along with the voices of James Gandolfini, »

The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between: G.I. Joe may have won the weekend box office, but when I was at my local theater on Saturday afternoon, I didn't hear one person in line ask for tickets to see it. So why did people stay away? Check out the review here. Cinematical is asking a lot of questions this weekend. The first of which is, what is your favorite John Hughes memory? Also, What happened to Rene Russo? I can't think of anything offhand that I've seen her in since The Thomas Crown Affair. How can Barbarella not be campy? Cinematical explains-- kinda. I saw the trailer for It's Complicated in front »

Actors and actresses drop out of the limelight all the time, and such is the nature of Hollywood that no one ever really stops, notices, and thinks to hire them. It's depressing and terrifying, to say the least.
The reason I started worrying about Rene Russo is actually quite bizarre. It was thanks to Jennifer Aniston, who didn't pacify my feelings on Pumas by hiring Michael Sucsy to direct her in Goree Girls. Yes, I'm a hypocrite -- one minute I'm railing against her persistent lonely girl rom-coms, and the next I'm all "Aniston as a singing Texas inmate? That's so ridiculous. Who would I cast, though? I don't know. Probably Rene Russo or something." And then it hit me ... what the heck happened to Ms. Russo? I went to IMDb expecting that she had things in pre-production, or had several films languishing in direct-to-dvd land, only to discover she »

It's been a while since Papa Smurf, Smurfette, or Gargamel have acted in front of a camera. Luckily, Columbia Pictures and Sony Animation have chosen a veteran live action/animation director for their big comeback.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Raja Gosnell, best known for directing Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, has signed on to direct the upcoming Smurfs movie. Like the 'Scooby-Doo' franchise, as well as Gosnell's recent Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Smurfs will feature live actors interacting with photorealistic, talking creatures (in this case, little blue men and women).
Given his pedigree, Gosnell seems like a natural fit to go with screenwriters J. David Stern and David N. Weiss (Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third), and Audrey Wells (whose screenplay for George of the Jungle, coincidentally, featured a talking ape named Ape). Previous reports linked special effects specialist Colin Brady to the film.
Producer Jordan Kerner spoke enthusiastically about Gosnell, »

Good baseball movies are hard to come by. You have Bull Durham, but even that’s a romantic comedy with baseball as an afterthought. The so-called classics are all great: For the Love of the Game, The Natural, A League of Their Own, etc. A few exist, but for the sheer volume of films made about our national pastime, you’d think we’d have gotten the “baseball movie” down to an art. Producing one Field of Dreams every 500 baseball movies isn’t a great ratio. Major League falls somewhere in that other 500; it’s neither a superb baseball movie nor a superb comedy. It simmers somewhere just below boiling and a notch above lukewarm.
It’s the premise which makes Major League such a catch. It’s the reverse of most sports films and yet it keeps to formula at the same time. The aberration from formula is the »

Chicago – Paramount Home Video is unleashing waves of catalog titles this month, starting with an interesting quintet of laugh-fests that range wildly in subject matter and quality.
What do they have in common? Well, three are from the “Saturday Night Live” factory - “Wayne’s World,” “Wayne’s World 2,” and “Black Sheep,” but the other two are not. Those three are also from the ’90s, another tempting way to bunch these random titles together, but “Major League” is an ’80s comedy and “Without a Paddle” is from the ’00s.
Even quality levels seem like an inappropriate way to lump these titles together as even diehard fans couldn’t claim that Chris Farley’s “Black Sheep” or the silly “Paddle” should stand next to “Wayne’s World” or the beloved “Major League”.
Why even try and lump them together? They’re all comedies. They’re all Paramount. Anyone can find at »

Could this be the year Pierce Brosnan finally makes The Topkapi Affair, the long-planned sequel to his 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair? We’re coming up on ten years since Crown hit the screen and it seems like ever since Brosnan has been talking about doing a follow up. Now, in a new interview with Moviehole, Brosnan mentions Topkapi again and seems to think if it doesn’t happen in 2009 it probably won’t happen at all. ''We are full steam ahead'', Brosnan says of "Topkapi". ''Full steam ahead. If we do not have it by this year, then we shall just say we gave a best effort. But Mary Parent is a magnificent supporter of the piece. Mr. Paul Verhoeven is still with us as a director and we have great executives over there at MGM now, who are passionate to make this film. So, we have a fabulous writer. »
