I had a friend who had done some jail time. I was always very curious about this because I knew that it would be hugely unlikely I would ever see the inside of a cell (knock on wood). He told that one of the most beloved movies by prisoners was Wizard of Oz. This made all the sense in the world. Wizard of Oz is the ultimate escapist fantasy, which betrays the film’s original message. My thoughts after the jump.
Ironically, what people remember most is the vivid Technicolor of Oz more than the sepia toned world of Kansas. We love our family, but the imagination is stirred by everything that happens when not at home, when not in a safe place. And yet that simple message that there is no place like home, that desire to return to one’s family is pretty profound in the movie. Wizard of Oz, »

It's a sad day in the entertainment world as one of it's most colourful characters has passed away. 'Captain' Lou Albano was 76. While some know him from his starring role opposite John Ritter in the 1992 hit film Stay Tuned and his many appearances as Mario in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, others may know him from his portrayal of Cyndi Lauper's Dad in the videos for 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun', 'She Bop' and 'The Goonies R Good Enough'. I, for one, will always remember him as one of the greatest wrestling personalities of all time. Over his 42-year career "Captain" Lou managed 34 men to championship gold which is an accomplishment that not even Jimmy 'Mouth of the South' Hart or Bobby "The Brain" Heenan can match. With his trademark rubber bands attached to his face he managed the likes of the U.S Express, »

Tragic news today from the professional wrestling community. WWE Hall of Famer Captain Lou Albano, 76, passed away today, only hours after the Miami Herald reported that he was at home with his family under hospice care. The news broke at wrestling enthusiast site PWInsider and was confirmed shortly after at WWE. It is a sad day for wrestling fans everywhere.
As a child of the '80s, my memories of Albano relate mainly to his time with the World Wrestling Federation. He was so cool, this screaming force of nature covered in rubber bands. As his star rose, Albano had the opportunity to leverage his newfound celebrity in Hollywood. He appeared in a number of films, including the John Ritter-starring "Stay Tuned" (a personal favorite). He also collaborated with pop star Cyndi Lauper on several music videos, including "The Goonies" tie-in, "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" (video above), which »

There's a reason most film romances cut off after the guy finally gets the girl, and it's because after that comes all the tough stuff. Jay Dipietro's Peter and Vandy is principally concerned with studying those fraught parts of a relationship, and his time-shifting study of long-term lovers has two independent film darlings that are up to his challenge: Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler.
Ritter's finally overcome his status as "the son of John Ritter" to bloom into an indie leading man in his own right, while Weixler recently burst onto the scene with attention-getting performances in Teeth and Alexander the Last. Both actors have retained their easy chemistry long after shooting Peter and Vandy, which means their joint interview with Movieline was kind of a gigglefest. »

In the indie feature Peter and Vandy, Jason Ritter stars as one half of a New York City couple who fall in love, then out of love, and then get back together. A pretty simple premise, except the whole film is told out of chronological order. It shifts back and forth between the good times, the bad, the innocent beginnings and the lessons learned. Huffington Post reporter Zorianna Kit sat down with the 29-year-old actor to talk about the film, the pressures of growing up in a famous family and how the death of his father, sitcom star John Ritter, affected him. Zorianna Kit: What drew you to Peter and Vandy? Jason Ritter: It seemed authentic. Peter's experience of being a man in this world seemed very close to my own experience. Zorianna: How do you identify with... »

In 1939, cinematic history was made in the form of The Wizard Of Oz, and seventy years later, the world will see the film in a whole new light. The film, which has been overlooked by noone, starred the one and only Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale and was directed by Victor Fleming. Wizard Of Oz took viewers through an exotically colorful journey to the land of Oz, and introduced characters such as the Tin Man (portrayed by Jack Haley), the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton), and, of course, the Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan). Lauded for its incredible translation of L. Frank Baum's masterpiece novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the film was the first of its kind in technicolor and continues to stand arm-in-arm with some of cinematic history's greatest contributions (which also include two other films of that year - namely, »

Did you know that Canada makes movies? It's true, and often they're actually quite good. Exotica, Maelstrom, Porky's, the work of David Cronenberg, but now the Canadians are turning it up a notch and throwing their beaver fur hats into the biggest film genre yet. Take a look at Canada's first superhero film... Defendor! Harrelson's gruff Christian Bale impression at the end of the trailer is awesome isn't it? The movie looks to be an interesting mix of last year's Special and John Ritter's underappreciated 1980 gem, Hero At Large, which can only be a good thing. The trailer isn't really paced all that well, but it hopefully gives a good idea as to the film's intertwined humor and pathos. Here's Defendor's synopsis courtesy of Twitch: Reality intersects with delusion in the mind of Arthur Poppington (Woody Harrelson), a regular man who adopts a superhero persona known as Defendor, and »

Who’s It For? Those who like to keep track of classic acting performances, or even the people who want to own every film that ever won an Oscar for “Best Adapted Screenplay.” Regardless, Sling Blade is a 1990’s classic, and checking it out for the first time through High Definition isn’t a bad idea.

Chicago – You won’t find the kind of diversity that exists in HollywoodChicago.com’s Blu-Ray Round-Up too many places online. Where else can modern sci-fi mingle with quarter-century-old genre product and hang out with Oscar winners and slapstick comedies? Nowhere.
The Round-Up is our regular informational column about titles that may have slipped under your radar just because they haven’t been on the cover of Entertainment Weekly or in the point-of-purchase slot at your local Blu-Ray store. Today’s edition of the Round-Up is particularly impressive with a massive comedy hit from Adam Sandler, a sci-fi cult classic, a great new TV show, and the film that made Billy Bob Thornton a star.
“Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead” was released on July 28th, 2009.
“Sling Blade,” and “The Waterboy” were released on August 4th, 2009.
“The Last Starfighter” will be released on August 18th, 2009.

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that aren't terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
When someone asks you if you want "the big gun" or "the good package," you know s/he's a fan of writer/director Dennis Feldman's "Real Men" (he also wrote "Just One of the Guys" and "The Golden Child"). The wacky spy comedy from 1987 follows ace-but-unorthodox CIA agent Nick Pirandello (Jim Belushi) as he escorts nebbishy family man Bob Wilson (John Ritter) to a secret rendezvous with aliens. Wilson isn't actually anything special, but he's the spitting image of Agent Pillbox, »

In 2002, John Ritter returned to ABC, the network that aired Three's Company, the sitcom that made him a star 15 years earlier.
In 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter, Ritter plays sportswriter and dad Paul Hennessy. He wants to take a more active role in the lives of his children so, when his wife Cate (Katey Sagal) returns to work full-time, he decides to stay home to take care of the kids. The trouble is that they're now a trio of independent teenagers -- popular Bridget (Kelly Cuoco), brainy Kerry (Amy Davidson), and smart-aleck Rory (Martin Spanjers).
The show was a moderate success, ranked 43rd for its first season on the air, and was renewed with an average of 10.85 million viewers. As you may recall, Ritter died unexpectedly after completion of the third episode of season two. The show's production was shut down to give the cast and crew time »

An official confirmation has not yet been made by Michael Jackson's family on when and where he will be buried, but talks have been mounting that the late performer will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, L.A. The funeral is said to be a private affair and will be kicked of at 8 A.M. Tuesday, July 7, only hours before a massive public memorial to be held at the Staples Center.
"Preparations are already underway with security extra tight for what will be one of the most eagerly awaited funerals of all time," Radar Online reports, adding that the actual resting place for Michael will be kept secret. "There are only a select few people who know the exact spot where he will be buried and any employee got giving any information will face criminal prosecution. Obviously, all of the staff are aware »

Joyce DeWitt is in trouble with da law. The actress best known for playing third fiddle to John Ritter and Suzanne Somers on Three's Company has been rung up by SoCal cops for apparently a little too much prefireworks celebrating on the Fourth. DeWitt was busted Saturday around 4:30 p.m. on suspicion of DUI, El Segundo Police Sgt. Dean Howard tells E! News. "An officer saw DeWitt drive a vehicle past a barricade intended to control vehicular traffic near a park," says Howard. "As the officer spoke with DeWitt, he observed signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication." DeWitt, 60, whiffed a series of field sobriety test and was hauled away to the station for booking. »

It’s Thursday, so it’s time for another Dream Cast, in which we take a classic movie or TV show -- perferrably something with Xer appeal that we can either trash or have fun with -- and recast a hypothetical (or sometimes not so hypothetical) remake with actors working today. This week: Three’s Company, the 1977-84 ABC sitcom about a straight man who pretends to be gay so he can share a Santa Monica apartment with two straight women. (If you have a suggestion for a classic TV show or movie we could play Dream Cast with, feel free to email me.) I remember being a small, stupid, uncritical child and loving this show. I’m not sure whether I understood, at the time, much of what passed for humor here. Did I know what it meant when people said a man was gay, or why mistaken sexual »

The folks over at Home Media Retailing have published the first details and what appears to be the finalized release date for The Wizard of Oz: 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition on Blu-ray Disc, the first of two lavish 70th Anniversary sets (the other being Gone With the Wind). In our last Wizard of Oz on Blu-ray update, the expected release date was October 27. Per this new information, you'll be off to see the Wizard on September 29. The transfer of Wizard of Oz to Blu-ray began by scanning each of the original Technicolor negatives using 8K resolution. From here, a "capture" master was created in 4K which will give the new Blu-ray 1080p transfer twice the resolution of the previous DVD release. In addition, audio will be offered in Dolby TrueHD. New bonus features will clock in at over four hours and feature a pair of Blu-ray exclusives: "If I Only Had a Brain, »

Director Sam Raimi makes his long awaited and apparently triumphant return to the horror genre this weekend. “Drag Me to Hell,” starring Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver and David Paymer, follows loan officer Christine Brown (Lohman) who ends up cursed after she turns down a mortgage extension for the wrong person. Her sanity crumbles as the world around her turns into a sort of living hell.
Now Raimi is far from the first filmmaker to look to the netherworld for inspiration. In the course of building this list, I found that there are surprisingly few horror movies that deal directly with Hell as a location, at least in comparison to other genres. That said, film in general is littered with references, reinterpretations and outright visitations to the realm of the damned. Heck (ha!), as the list below shows, even musicals aren’t safe from Satan’s touch.

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard Hawks’ El Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets. »

Movie lovers have the Academy Awards and the music industry has the Grammys. But, the big event for fans of classic television is the annual TV Land Awards. This year's event moves from the Barker Hanger at the Santa Monica Airport to the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal Studios. But, as per usual, it's a great event to see stars of cancelled TV shows.
Though TV Land now produces new shows that aren't directly related to classic TV, this yearly celebration is still focused on the stars and shows of years gone by.
Following in the footsteps of John Ritter, Brad Garrett, Megan Mullally, and Vanessa L. Williams, this year's host is Neil Patrick Harris. He's very popular these days from his work on How I Met Your Mother and the Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog web series. He's also no stranger to classic TV, having starred in ABC's Doogie Howser MD series 20 years ago. »
