Steven Spielberg has backed out of directing Harvey, a remake of the 1950 classic starring Jimmy Stewart.
The 62-year-old director spent several months developing the film, which was to be his next production and the first under the newly stand-alone DreamWorks. Fox was allowing Dw to fund 50% through their deal with Dubai-based Reliance, but the movie fell apart when Spielberg couldn’t find a star for the lead. Fox will continue to work on it.
The obvious choice, considering their history, was Tom Hanks. Except he declined to make… well, I’m not sure. Robert Downey Jr. was also “courted” for the part, according to Variety, but didn’t sign on. What is wrong with Hollywood that Steven Spielberg can’t get anyone to star in his movie? Where was his golden boy, Shia Labeouf?
The story, an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Mary Chase, centers on a man »

An intriguing premise turns in to 115 minutes of codswallop. Peter Bradshaw squirms away
There are some films that confront the viewer with profound ethical dilemmas, agonising moral choices. In this one, an ageing man with a horrible face approaches a happily married woman with a proposition that could earn her $1m. Oh, heavens to Betsy, you are probably thinking, it's that Robert Redford back again, the incorrigible old goat, making another of his indecent proposals: a sackful of cash in exchange for the chance to let his expensive trousers and pants pool round his ankles while he puts you on the receiving end of a one-off rogering. How absolutely loathsome. And yet it is a lot of money, so gosh, would I? Would I?
But it is not Robert Redford. This time it is Frank Langella, playing a man with an appalling wound to the side of his face, dressed »

The Sundance Film Festival, the world's main event for independent cinema, runs Jan. 21-31, 2010 in Park City, Utah.
Sundance is noted for discovering/launching the best indie titles, including the most recent, 2009's "Precious" and "An Education".
The 2010 Festival received 2,080 submissions for narrative features and 1644 docs, totaling 3,724 films viewed by fest programmers for final selections.
Presenting sponsors are Entertainment Weekly, Hp, Honda and Sundance Channel, bolstered by support from the Sundance Institute.
According to Fest founder, actor/director Robert Redford there will not be as much 'glitz $ hoopla' surrounding Sundance as there was in Toronto at Tiff.
"We don't do red carpet and we don't have government officials and executives who demand this sort of thing, so we decided we didn't need that kind of opening night," he said.
The 2010 Sundance Competition Lineup will include:
"Blue Valentine", directed by Derek Cianfrance, "Douchebag", directed by Drake Doremus, "The Dry Land", directed »

Overrated films are an interesting breed. They are essentially the type that everybody goes crazy for until consideration, time, thought and retrospect force us to reassess the situation. They are, by and large, the product of Hollywood: though by no means exclusive. However, Hollywood films are the most hyped; the most seen; the most heard. They are garnered with awards and flattery and the cycle begins again. Is it genius of deception or commerce?
Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane is often labelled as “the greatest film ever made”. It will not appear in this list. It is not an overrated film. Even now, in the sixty-plus years since its release, Welles’ masterpiece remains inimitable. Searching for something to dislike in it is pointless. Yes, critics go ga-ga for Orson, and so they should. He was a true maverick.

The British satirist's new film joins the lineup of 113 independent films to unspool over the 2010 festival, together with new movies starring Kristen Stewart, James Gandolfini and James Franco
Satirist Chris Morris looks set to lead the British charge at next year's Sundance film festival – his debut feature has been selected to premiere at the event. Four Lions comes billed as a comedy about a band of wannabe British jihadists. Morris has claimed that the film will do for Islamist extremists what Dad's Army did for Nazis – making them look "scary but also ridiculous".
All the same, Four Lions remains likely to spark controversy. Morris was dubbed the "most hated man in Britain" after a Brass Eye TV special in 2001 which dared to poke fun at the moral panic surrounding paedophilia.
Four Lions takes its place among 113 independent films that are due to be unveiled at Park City. The 16 films selected »

The Sundance Institute announced today the first list of films that will play at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, which I will once again be attending and covering for Fsr. This announcement includes the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the fst. In addition to the four Competition Categories, the Festival presents films in five out-of-competition sections to be announced on December 3. The 2010 Sundance Film Festival will also feature several category changes including a new section devoted to low- and no-budget filmmaking and Sundance Film Festival U.S.A.- a one-night only event when eight filmmakers from the Festival will visit eight cities nationwide. In addition, the Festival will break tradition by foregoing the conventions of one opening night film and instead focus on launching the total program: one narrative film, one documentary and one shorts program will play the first Thursday (January 21), beginning the roll out of the competitions. “Being »

Oprah Winfrey has chosen an Irish celebrity chef who cooked for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as her new website chef. Aine McAteer (54), from Cavan, has also cooked for Hollywood stars such as Robert Redford and Simpsons creator Matt Groening during her career. McAteer told the Evening Herald newspaper she was hired after bringing her own cookies to the interview and speaking about the famous names she has already cooked for. "I knew Oprah was starting a new tv network and that they were creating a new website for it. I was put in touch with a guy who was working on her website, and I brought cookies and a pack for Oprah," she said McAteer focuses on a macrobiotic diet cooking with whole grains and vegetables. Chicago – Robert Sean Leonard, who plays Dr. James Wilson on “House M.D.” (and the best friend of Golden Globe winner Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House), describes himself as less than ambitious with his career and even “lazy” in an interview with HollywoodChicago.com’s presence. He’s also remembered for his role on “Dead Poet’s Society”.
Tonight’s self-titled episode “Wilson,” which is episode nine of season six, puts Robert Sean Leonard more in the spotlight than fans are used to seeing him. The episode, which airs on Nov. 30, 2009 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Fox, is an intense examination into Wilson’s world when it’s not involving House.
“House M.D.” stars Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard, Lisa Edelstein, Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Jesse Spencer and Olivia Wilde from creator David Shore. Tonight’s episode synopsis follows and then the Robert Sean Leonard interview follows thereafter.

Michael Winterbottom and Mat Whitecross' The Shock Doctrine (which was presented as an unfinished cut at Berlin) will be the lead off film and the keeping with the idea of films that "spur debate", I don't think that the other films to participate in Sundance Film Festival U.S.A initiative will be heavyweight fiction titles, but we can expect to see a good number of doc features that need the attention. - Since not everyone can jet out to Park City for Sundance festivities, the festival is making plans to bring a small portion of Sundance to you. While last year they made a small batch of short films available for download, this year they're laying the groundwork for what I imagine could be a popular, yearly event - one day (January 28th) of Sundancing at select art house theaters. This week: Stuart Heritage's top five moral dilemmas on film
The moral conundrum at the heart of new Cameron Diaz film The Box isn't whether or not you should see it – because reviewers seem pretty adamant that you absolutely shouldn't – it's this: would you push a button that gave you a million dollars, even if you knew it meant that a stranger would die? Fiendish. You would, obviously, but it's still quite fiendish. Here are five other cinematic moral dilemmas, along with their solutions …
Two boats filled with explosives – should passengers save themselves by blowing up the other vessel? Yes! They live in Gotham City, so it's not like they have anything to live for. Best-case scenario is that they survive and then a fat bloke dressed as a penguin comes along and kills them after a fortnight. They'd be doing the other boat a favour, »

Scottish actor James McAvoy found his boss Robert Redford a tough taskmaster while working on the star's latest movie - after the Hollywood veteran ordered him to speak in an American accent at all times.
The Last King of Scotland star is playing U.S. lawyer Frederick Aiken in Redford's The Conspirator, about the trial of a woman said to be involved in the assassination of 19th century American president Abraham Lincoln.
But McAvoy found himself at work even when the cameras stopped rolling - because Redford demanded he kept his U.S. lilt even during his downtime.
He says, "Bob wants me to stay in an American accent all the time. I'm trying to but I just can't be bothered all the time. I'm trying to make Bob happy, but that's an exhausting task.
"I'll get there eventually, hopefully, one day. So, no, I'm not particularly method with either my accents or my acting." »

James Earl Jones has been breaking down barriers since the 1950s. As he prepares to star in an all-black Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, he tells Maddy Costa about his absent father, elderly sex – and why his stutter was his salvation
The septuagenarian walking slowly through the Novello theatre in London looks like an archetypal American tourist. Tall and wide, he wears a puffy gilet that makes him seem even bulkier, while a faded baseball cap shades his face. Yet this ordinary-looking man is one of America's pre-eminent actors: James Earl Jones. Over the last 50 years, he has won two Tony awards (playing a boxer in The Great White Hope, and for his role in August Wilson's Fences), an Oscar nomination (for the film of The Great White Hope), as well as multiple Emmy nominations and awards for his TV work.
You wouldn't know any of this to look at him, »

Bob Dylan sang about how there’s no success like failure, but in the films of Michael Ritchie, the opposite is often true. Elected to the Senate after a brutal, compromise-filled campaign in The Candidate, Robert Redford turns to his closest advisor and asks, “What do we do now?” He’s lost sight of the sure moral ground on which he once stood, and the trip across the finish line has left him—to borrow another Dylan line—with no direction home. The Candidate was conceived as the second in a series of Redford-starring/Ritchie-directed movies about what it takes ... »
