There are times when our fandom gets satiated. We see a world stretch out before us on the big screen, come to adore a character, and then get to follow him or her through a number of films. In some cases, they might even start to feel like an old friend, popping up over and over again. We'll become attuned to their swagger, the tone of their voice, the moments they love or loathe. Other characters, their presence in our lives is deliciously, yet painfully brief -- destined only for repeat viewings of the same scenes, the same reactions, the same outcome over and over again.
The more our movie world leans towards sequels, the more part of me wishes certain characters could have continuing life on the big screen. (Played by the same actor, of course. No Vince Vaughn/Norman Bates recasts allowed.) On the mind from earlier this month, »

I cannot possibly think of villains without thinking of Lena Olin's Mona Demarkov. While the trailer for Romeo is Bleeding suggests that the film is nothing more than a ridiculous camp fest, her portrayal of the sadistic Russian hitwoman is mesmerizing and scary. With ease, she oozes every aspect of evil.
She can be the stoic, gravelly voiced baddie who bides her time, waiting for the perfect moment -- her eyes not missing a thing. She can be the seductress, using her beauty to easily prey on Jack's (Gary Oldman) continually wandering eye. She can be the villain who never gets killed -- not swayed by a shot to the arm, or other wounds that challenge her. But her most memorable evil -- her most villainous aspect -- is her adoration of real, intimate, bodily violence. She's not some bad gal with firepower. Her violence is within her, her »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Gotta love the Internet rumor-mongerers--now that Queen Of The Damned is hitting theaters and Jason X has a set release date in April, you have to wonder if any of those people feel chagrined for insisting the movies were going direct to video. Queen certainly doesn't feel like something that warrants small-screen consignment, especially on a visual level, as this is one of the lushest-looking horror films in recent memory. It's pretty lush in the dramatic department, too, at least in its first and more enjoyable half.
As most anyone who's been paying attention to the film's development knows, Queen is based not just on the novel of the title but also author Anne Rice's previous installment, The Vampire Lestat (onscreen, »

Ellen Page, Rainn Wilson, and Liv Tyler are set to star in "Super," a superhero comedy. James Gunn, the guy who wrote "Dawn of the Dead" and the two "Scooby-Doo" films, and directed the criminally under-seen "Slither" wrote the script and is set to direct.
Production is set for December.
Wilson will play an average guy who takes on a superhero alter ego known as Crimson Bolt after watching his wife (Tyler) fall for a charming drug dealer. His super powers? Swinging a wrench at anyone who comes in his way.
Sounds charming, and the cast is great, but superhero comedies, especially the pseudo-superhero ones, never work! Remember the movie "Mystery Men" starring Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy, Paul Reubens, Geoffrey Rush, Lena Olin, Eddie Izzard, and Greg Kinnear? Great cast right? But the film failed to fly critically and commercially. »

Welcome back to our EW University course on TV Auteurs -- a look at some of the people who have had a major role in shaping the medium over the last 50 years. Today, Prof. Dan Snierson offers his overview of the work of J.J. Abrams. If you had to sum up J.J. Abrams neatly in just one word, it would be ... kinda hard to do. He’s a cross-genre, multi-medium hyphenate who flies a geek flag of many colors. (The boy who grew up on The Twilight Zone, Mission Impossible, Get Smart, James Bond, and Star Wars has crafted a TV resume that boasts credits as diverse as Felicity and Fringe; his movie credits range from Regarding Henry to Cloverfield.) His projects tend to be smart, layered, splashy, angsty, laced with mystery and/or mythology -- plus they just might contain an It Girl in the making (see: Keri Russell, »

Great movies sometimes do not hit it off with the audience upon first viewing. Not even the sublime Citizen Kane found much appreciation on its release in 1941, taking over twenty years and critical re-discovery in order for everybody to agree it was a pretty special movie.
Cult films are different (and this is not a list of cult movies) – those do tend to find an audience (usually people who become hardcore fans) allowing the film to become celebrated in alternative ways – as opposed to garnering a multitude of awards.
This is a list drawn up of films I consider under-rated; overlooked; not thought about; dismissed, and so forth. I am not suggesting they should be regaled as masterpieces anointed and placed in a cinematic pantheon of greatness.
Compiling lists is very tough and as this is limited to a mere ten films, some wonderful films did not make final cut. »

1. No Wall Street For Old Men.
Oliver Stone and 20th Century Fox want Javier Bardem to star opposite Michael Douglas and Transformer 2 Shia Labeouf in Wall Street 2.
Whilst Bardem hasn’t met with Stone or the studio as of yet, the Spanish star is at the top of their wish list to play the villain in the sequel to the Oscar-winning hit.
Apparently the plot of the movie involves Labeouf’s character seeking revenge on (what would be) Bardem’s evil stock trader. In order to navigate the choppy waters of Wall Street the kid befriends Douglas’ Gordon Gecko who has been released from prison following »
