Chicago – “Hell is other people!” declares reclusive author Arlen Faber. That’s nothing compared to the hell of fake people, who permeate so many subpar pictures marketed as “indie” entertainment. There’s not a single character in “The Answer Man” that feels the least bit realistic. There’s not a single line of dialogue that sounds as if it was spontaneously spoken, instead of typed by a screenwriter with a slick Thesaurus. But most importantly, the film doesn’t work because its characters are simply undeserving of the required audience empathy. It’s impossible to care about anyone on the screen, or anything that happens to them.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
So why is this film a mediocre dud rather than a catastrophic failure? Because it is populated by gifted actors who try to inject the contrived material with vibrant life. Jeff Daniels is one of the most appealing actors in modern cinema, »

Rihanna stole the show in her dramatic white dress as she and her fellow honorees took the red carpet at last night's Glamour Women of the Year celebration in NYC. Carnegie Hall was brimming with beautiful ladies from Iman to Maria Shriver and Diane von Furstenberg. Catherine Zeta-Jones stood out in blue and had Michael Douglas by her side for support. Rih was just one of a handful of women who were chosen by the magazine, but all eyes were on her - and most of you are loving the look, just the latest in her fashion metamorphosis! Padma Lakshmi showed off her growing baby bump while one of the evening's honorees Stella McCartney smiled big with her award up on stage where she also had some trouble with her super short skirt. Amy Poehler and Michelle Obama were two of the magazine's other women of the year, though the »

Moon director Duncan Jones has lined up his next project, and he.s sticking with heady science fiction. Variety says he.s helming Source Code, in which Jake Gyllenhaal is negotiating to star. Minutes after reading this announcement the script for Source Code showed up on my desk. Once I crack it open I.ll be able to give you a more detailed accounting, but in the meantime what we know is that it.s about a soldier stuck in a very unpleasant remake of Groundhog Day. He wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and finds himself reliving a harrowing train bombing until he.s able to discover who.s responsible for it. or has sex with Andie MacDowell. Ned Ryerson related humor aside, I.m actually pretty excited by this. Science fiction needs more talent and Hollywood.s best and brightest often make their name in »

Andie MacDowell has revealed that she hates taking her clothes off to film sex scenes. The star, who has to strip off to play a sex addict in new Lifetime films The Front and At Risk, said that her shyness makes being nude in front of the camera embarrassing. MacDowell told Fox News: "I play a real bi**h, I was a narcissistic sex addict and had to sleep with young men. But it was embarrassing because I’m pretty shy and yet I had to look at myself in the mirror and take my clothes off." The 51-year-old also talked about the difficulty of (more) »

Whether it’s a growing public tolerance for nudity in films, or just a sign of the times, more and more actresses are being asked to shed their clothes on screen. It’s a hot topic among young Hollywood stars like Miley Cyrus, Hayden Panettiere, Megan Fox and Emma Watson, who are trying to make the leap to more mature roles. But what about a first-timer like Andie MacDowell, who is 51? MacDowell says she was terrified of stripping down to the flesh, but in the end, glad she did it. »

Is nothing sacred? It seems like only yesterday—if yesterday was, say, 20 years ago—that the Andie MacDowell/Gérard Depardieu rom-com Green Card walked off with America’s heart, and now the Sandra Bullock vehicle The Proposal (Buena Vista) has come along to steal its “immigrant marries to stay in the country but improbably falls in love” premise. For this sly piece of counter-programming, summer audiences rewarded Bullock and co-star Ryan Reynolds with a sleeper hit. But we will never forget you, Green Card!… Following the bellicose third entry in his Spider-Man franchise, Sam Raimi’s horror-comedy Drag ... »

Streep at 60: We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competition. Previously 78, 79, 81, 82 and 83, 85, 87 and 88
I believe that Meryl Streep's film career can be divided into five chapters or acts (thus far).
Act I (Liberated Lady) 1977-1981Act II (Chamaeleonidae Erotica) 1981-1988Act III (Funny Lady) 1989-1992Act IV (???) 1993-2001Act V (The Great Entertainer) 2002-presentAfter the High Drama years it came as a shock to many when Meryl was suddenly making comedies. Some felt it was a career crisis and there was some backlash going on. This is possibly hard to comprehend for her new young fans but great success always leads to it and many people were sick of Streep's total dominance as the Eighties wound down. It was somewhat common wisdom at the time that her run at the top was ending, having turned 40 in 1989. Several younger stars were coming into their own »

If you haven’t seen Super Troopers, Club Dread or Beerfest, you’re probably not familiar with the comedy troupe known as Broken Lizard. Since their college days, Jay Chandrasekhar (Director, Dukes of Hazzard), Kevin Heffernan, Stephen Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske have been making people laugh and sometimes, making a movie or two. I first became familiar with their work when a colleague told me to check out Super Troopers.
I scoffed. It sounded stupid. Then, late one night on cable, Super Troopers was on, so I gave it a chance. I was right. It was stupid. It was also one of the funniest little films I’d seen in a very long time. After drinking the Kool Aid and becoming a member of the Broken Lizard fan club, I scoured the internet to find a copy of their first film, Puddle Cruiser. On some crappy website where »

The movie's star Sverrir Gudnason was also named best actor for playing the son of a mentally ill woman.
Hollywood actress Andie MacDowell presented Danish star Simone Tang with the Best Actress accolade for her portrayal of a high school student in Aching Hearts.

We all know how it is. You'd like to get out to see a new movie this weekend, but the Old Testament stippled with fart jokes ain’t your idea of a good time. But you can have something close to that blockbuster experience at home with the proper application of DVDs. In fact, you might even be able to one-up everyone else at the watercooler come Monday, because while they're saying, "Hey, did you see Year One?" you can respond, "No, I saw a couple classic movies from the era when blasphemy was taken seriously." Instead Of: The Proposal, the “romantic” “comedy” in which “poisonous bitch” Sandra Bullock sexually harasses her secretary, Ryan Reynolds, into marrying her to avoid being deported... Watch: Green Card, obviously, the 1990 dramedy in which Andie MacDowell agrees to marry Gérard Depardieu so he can stay in New York. It’s unaffectedly charming, unlike The Proposal, »

Andie MacDowell has backtracked on her comments that older women aren't neglected in Hollywood - insisting the U.S. movie industry is obsessed with youth.
Earlier this year the Four Weddings and a Funeral star was adamant there are still many challenging roles available for women in their 40s and 50s.
She told reporters, "Films have changed a lot. I think women are finally able to get older and be sexy just like men."
But in an interview on Thursday the star made it clear she is concerned with the way studio bosses try to avoid casting middle-aged actresses.
She says, "In America, there's such a hunger for young people, so you get the young up-and-coming star. And then it becomes a time period when they really don't know what to do with you or how to use you."
However, the 51-year-old is hoping to land grittier parts as she gets older - and urges A-list leading ladies not to pine for the days when they were the hottest thing in Tinseltown.
She adds, "It changes, I think, after 50 - then you become - 'I'm the mother of the 20-year-old'. So I'm hoping there's going to be a shift again and I'll work more.
"I think you have to stay open and flexible and look for opportunities and not be arrogant. You're so used to being the lead or the hot thing. I think a lot of people get stuck in that moment." »

Actress Andie MacDowell is ignoring pressure from her friends to start dating again because she's so happy on her own.
The Golden Globe-winning star split from her second husband, businessman Rhett Hartzog, in 2004 and she's refused to start a serious relationship since.
MacDowell, who has one son and two daughters from her first marriage to model Paul Qualley, has found inner-happiness through yoga and insists she is content without romance in her life.
But her friends are so concerned about the Four Weddings and a Funeral actress staying single, they are constantly urging her to find a new man.
MacDowell says, "I think it's their discomfort with you being single. Now, though, I like being single. I took a sabbatical. I took time to discover who I really am. I think you make so many sacrifices in a relationship to be who they want you to be that you lose track of who you are.
"It was during yoga that I started thinking about the things about myself that I really enjoy. It's ok to be alone." »
