Streep at 60: We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competition. Previously 78, 79, 81, 82 and 83, 85, 87 and 88
I believe that Meryl Streep's film career can be divided into five chapters or acts (thus far).
Act I (Liberated Lady) 1977-1981Act II (Chamaeleonidae Erotica) 1981-1988Act III (Funny Lady) 1989-1992Act IV (???) 1993-2001Act V (The Great Entertainer) 2002-presentAfter the High Drama years it came as a shock to many when Meryl was suddenly making comedies. Some felt it was a career crisis and there was some backlash going on. This is possibly hard to comprehend for her new young fans but great success always leads to it and many people were sick of Streep's total dominance as the Eighties wound down. It was somewhat common wisdom at the time that her run at the top was ending, having turned 40 in 1989. Several younger stars were coming into their own

If you haven’t seen Super Troopers, Club Dread or Beerfest, you’re probably not familiar with the comedy troupe known as Broken Lizard. Since their college days, Jay Chandrasekhar (Director, Dukes of Hazzard), Kevin Heffernan, Stephen Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske have been making people laugh and sometimes, making a movie or two. I first became familiar with their work when a colleague told me to check out Super Troopers.
I scoffed. It sounded stupid. Then, late one night on cable, Super Troopers was on, so I gave it a chance. I was right. It was stupid. It was also one of the funniest little films I’d seen in a very long time. After drinking the Kool Aid and becoming a member of the Broken Lizard fan club, I scoured the internet to find a copy of their first film, Puddle Cruiser. On some crappy website where

We all know how it is. You'd like to get out to see a new movie this weekend, but the Old Testament stippled with fart jokes ain’t your idea of a good time. But you can have something close to that blockbuster experience at home with the proper application of DVDs. In fact, you might even be able to one-up everyone else at the watercooler come Monday, because while they're saying, "Hey, did you see Year One?" you can respond, "No, I saw a couple classic movies from the era when blasphemy was taken seriously." Instead Of: The Proposal, the “romantic” “comedy” in which “poisonous bitch” Sandra Bullock sexually harasses her secretary, Ryan Reynolds, into marrying her to avoid being deported... Watch: Green Card, obviously, the 1990 dramedy in which Andie MacDowell agrees to marry Gérard Depardieu so he can stay in New York. It’s unaffectedly charming, unlike The Proposal,

Andie MacDowell has backtracked on her comments that older women aren't neglected in Hollywood - insisting the U.S. movie industry is obsessed with youth.
Earlier this year the Four Weddings and a Funeral star was adamant there are still many challenging roles available for women in their 40s and 50s.
She told reporters, "Films have changed a lot. I think women are finally able to get older and be sexy just like men."
But in an interview on Thursday the star made it clear she is concerned with the way studio bosses try to avoid casting middle-aged actresses.
She says, "In America, there's such a hunger for young people, so you get the young up-and-coming star. And then it becomes a time period when they really don't know what to do with you or how to use you."
However, the 51-year-old is hoping to land grittier parts as she gets older - and urges A-list leading ladies not to pine for the days when they were the hottest thing in Tinseltown.
She adds, "It changes, I think, after 50 - then you become - 'I'm the mother of the 20-year-old'. So I'm hoping there's going to be a shift again and I'll work more.
"I think you have to stay open and flexible and look for opportunities and not be arrogant. You're so used to being the lead or the hot thing. I think a lot of people get stuck in that moment."

Actress Andie MacDowell is ignoring pressure from her friends to start dating again because she's so happy on her own.
The Golden Globe-winning star split from her second husband, businessman Rhett Hartzog, in 2004 and she's refused to start a serious relationship since.
MacDowell, who has one son and two daughters from her first marriage to model Paul Qualley, has found inner-happiness through yoga and insists she is content without romance in her life.
But her friends are so concerned about the Four Weddings and a Funeral actress staying single, they are constantly urging her to find a new man.
MacDowell says, "I think it's their discomfort with you being single. Now, though, I like being single. I took a sabbatical. I took time to discover who I really am. I think you make so many sacrifices in a relationship to be who they want you to be that you lose track of who you are.
"It was during yoga that I started thinking about the things about myself that I really enjoy. It's ok to be alone."

For no reason whatsoever I have declared today 1984 day! It's a 25th Anniversary Jamboree or some such. (Don't ask questions. Just go with it) Herewith a tripled top ten: What the public liked, what Oscar liked, what I liked from the year that was. All movie title links go to their Netflix page in case you're interested in giving them a looksie. First a little historical entertainment context: Vanessa Williams was not starring on Ugly Betty but resigning her Miss America tiara due to nude photos (the more things change...), Ricky Martin was a new member of Menudo, people were just discovering what Madonna looked like on MTV, and Scarlett Johansson was fresh out of the womb.
What Oscar Liked
The Oscar nominees for Best Picture were the Mozart bio Amadeus (11 noms / 8 wins), the legendary David Lean's swan song A Passage to India (11 noms / 2 wins), Roland Joffé's war

Andie MacDowell ("Four Weddings and a Funeral") is saying that older women are Not neglected in Hollywood!
According to WENN, MacDowell claims:
"How do I think the industry's changed? Films have changed a lot. I think women are finally able to get older and be sexy just like men. So I'm really enjoying that part - that's my evolution. I think sometimes we seem to obsess on negativity. I think role models exist but they usually don't get the light because people like scandal."
Good for her! But what about the legitimate claims from other women about ageism in Hollywood?
I suggest you guys check out the film "Searching for Debra Winger." It's a documentary directed by Rosanna Arquette about the pressures women face in the entertainment industry.

Andie MacDowell has rubbished claims older women are neglected in Hollywood - insisting there are plenty of quality film roles for mature actresses.
Veteran screen star Faye Dunaway last year voiced her disappointment with movie producers for denying older female actresses the chance to play major lead roles.
Dunaway insisted movie bosses’ casting decisions are hypocritical because they allow ageing male actors, such as Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood, to romance much younger actresses on the big screen.
But Golden Globe winning star MacDowell is adamant there is a string of challenging roles on offer for females.
She says, "How do I think the industry's changed? Films have changed a lot. I think women are finally able to get older and be sexy just like men. So I'm really enjoying that part - that's my evolution. I think sometimes we seem to obsess on negativity. I think role models exist but they usually don't get the light because people like scandal."

The women at the Independent Spirit Awards looked beautiful but kept things more casual with their shorter dresses for the afternoon event. Anne Hathaway shined in her off-white dress with feminine details as many other actresses showed off their flirty styles. Cameron Diaz rocked the stripes, as did Michelle Williams in her sleeveless dress with pockets. Mary-Kate stood out with her shoulder pads and long sleeves and the award-winning Penelope Cruz - who had a run in with ex Tom Cruise the night before - look perfect in a frilly hemmed brown dress. Meanwhile, the men ranged from jeans to suits, but still looked handsome as usual. James Franco didn't manage to shave for the event but wore his pinstripes proudly. Aaron Eckhart, Emile Hirsch and Blair Underwood sported the denim look while Mickey Rourke had fun running around the blue carpet chatting with everyone. Make sure to check out all of Buzz,
