Armored Movie Review

16 hours ago | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Nimrod Antal’s Armored feels like a film from a different time; specifically, an action thriller from the late 1990s. It’s the kind of second tier B movie that might have starred Cuba Gooding Jr. in the lead, Michael Keaton in the Dillon role, and Laurence Fishburne in the same role he’s got here.  Due to the shrieking chaos of most modern action films, this fact actually proves to be a good thing.

Under the skilled direction of Antal, Armored trades up shaky cam and overcooked editing for expertly shot and nerve-jangling chase sequences that feel inspired by 1970’s crime thrillers. The second string cast, including Dillon, Fishburn, Ulrich and the always dependable Ward, all deliver down-to-earth performances that fit the characters.

Unfortunately, a predictable plot rife with holes and inconsistencies and a script banged together from old heist clichés shoots the movie in the foot before it »

November 25: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

25 November 2009 3:33 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this long holiday weekend, but you won’t be able to move off the sofa after all that turkey, plus: football! But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see Old Dogs this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I watched a bunch of other dads-suck movies that came before.” Instead Of: Old Dogs, in which John Travolta and Robin Williams get unexpectedly saddled with seven-year-old twins and go on to demonstrate what awful parental figures they are... Watch: Wild Hogs (2007), in which a bunch of suburban dads escape their terrible lives of 5,000-square-foot McMansions and mass consumerism by riding off into a motorcycle sitcom; Dogs seems keyed to appeal to the same audience, down to same star (Travolta) and »

Are you a fan of Fawlty Towers? Ever even heard of the show? Well it’s where John Cleese headed for a brief time after Monty Python back in 1975 and 1979. The show only ran for 12 episodes, but every single one of them is hysterical, and many are funny enough to bring tears to your eyes (that’s not PR, that’s my opinion). Fawlty Towers also starred Prunella Scales, Connie Both and Andrew Sachs.

Well it’s the 30th anniversary of the show and the episodes are being re-released in a special edition, remastered DVD set – and we have four (4) copies to give away!

Precious – Based On The Novel “Push” By Sapphire Review

5 November 2009 7:49 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In the movie “Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire”, an obese black girl growing up in 80s Harlem is beaten and verbally abused by her selfish mother.  The girl is pregnant with her second child after being raped again by her father.  Still hopeful for a better life, the girl enrolls in a program that teaches wayward young women to get their G.E.D.  Through the help of a saintly teacher and the support of her classmates, the girl finds confidence and love.  The movie co-stars comedienne Mo’Nique, pop sensation Mariah Carey, and cross-genre musician Lenny Kravitz.

“Precious” is not a Hallmark movie.  It is one of the best films of the year.

From the synopsis above, it would be reasonable to assume that “Precious” is nothing but the most trite, mawkish, and manipulative of movies.  However, director Lee Daniels manages to dodge every trap and »

In Desperate Need of More Cuba? Wrong Turn At Tahoe Can Help.

3 November 2009 9:28 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Forget what you may have heard to the contrary — Cuba Gooding, Jr. is the hardest working man in show business. Well, he’s the hardest working man in direct-to-video cinema, anyway. If his seriously dodgy Val Kilmer co-op “Hard Wired” wasn’t enough to satisfy your unnatural craving for Cuba’s patented brand of second-tier action, you’ll only have to wait a few weeks to enjoy Franck Khalfoun’s “Wrong Turn at Tahoe,” which co-stars Harvey Keitel and Miguel Ferrer. If this release doesn’t cement the man’s place at the top of the Stv pile, I don’t know what will. After all, when you’re releasing more movies per year than the likes of Steven Seagal and Val Kilmer, that has to account for something, right? Here’s the lowdown on the plot: Love. Honor. Power. Fear of death… People live for all kinds of reasons. »

There's a movie coming to DVD pretty quick that I think is under the radar for most people, and I just wanted to get out a quick mention for you. Harvey Keitel, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Miguel Ferrer usually aren't names you associate with films that aren't getting enough mention, but I haven't heard much chatter about Wrong Turn at Tahoe, and when this shows up you might want something to work with. Love. Honor. Power. Fear of death… People live for all kinds of reasons. Life becomes the ultimate battle when all you're living for is revenge. Joshua (Oscar® winner Cuba Gooding Jr.), a hard-nosed collector for a ruthless mob boss (Miguel Ferrer), lives in a world filled with brutal violence and beautiful women. Top 7 Actors playing Athletes in Sports Films

3 October 2009 7:30 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

With Whip It swirling its way into theaters, it’s a wonder no one has fully acknowledged the absolutely amazing athletic work these brave actresses have put into the final product. Let’s face it, not all actors can “bring it” when it comes to believably portraying a real-life athlete.

Truth of the matter is, it’s about as rare a feat as you’re likely to see capably pulled off in Hollywood. Ellen Page (who will more than likely make a later edition of this list) made frantically scuttering around a cylindrical death-track look effortless, even graceful. Hell, the entire cast made roller derby look like the ballet with brute violence. This got me to thinking – Which other Hollywood actors have been the most convincing athletes on the big screen? They deserve their due (to go along with their millions of »

George Tillman Jr. Goes Faster

30 September 2009 12:36 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Dwayne ‘Don’t Call Me The Rock’ Johnson’s revenge thriller, Faster, has found itself a new director: George ‘Don’t Call Me The Rock Either’ Tillman Jr.Tillman, who last directed the Notorious B.I.G. biopic, Notorious, is currently in talks to replace Phil Joanou at the helm of the movie, which will star Johnson as an ex-con avenging the murder of his brother. Joanou dropped out a couple of months ago – and with production due to start early next year, the need to install a new director was growing by the day. It’ll be Tillman’s first crack at an action movie proper – he directed Men Of Honour, that awful Cuba Gooding Jr./Robert De Niro movie back in 2000, but we’re sure he’d prefer it if we all just forgot that – and while he may not be a typical choice to helm a revenge flick, neither was Joanou. »

Highest Paid Actors

20 September 2009 11:40 PM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

As you scrape together enough coins to score an .89 cent taco, rest assured your favorite actor is dining on crystal and Kobe beef. In the unfair world we live in, we pay strangers to entertain us more than teachers who shape us, but that is a completely different story. It is always interesting to find out how much actors make on one film; sometimes this information is made public while other times is it kept tight lipped. For example, in 2008 Harrison Ford made $65 million for Indiana Jones, Adam Sandler made $55 million, and on the low end Johnny Depp only earned $27 million. We are about to explore the top grossing actors in 2008 so in the words of Cuba Gooding Jr., "show me the money!" 2008 was an interesting year for the film industry and we got to see a lot of box office blasts as well as some not so popular box office bombs. »
