Cinematic birthdays for Nov. 19th, this time with lighter loafers.
1889 Clifton Webb, reportedly as out as an actor could be back in the day but Oscar never gave him their top prize. They never give out actors the statue. Sad, but true. Classic films include Oscar favorites like Laura and Three Coins in the Fountain (review) but he's most famous for playing Mr. Belvedere, the uptight gentlemen bachelor of a certain obvious if unspoken persuasion. I saw the first of the three Belvedere films Sitting Pretty (1948) a few years ago and it was quite an... unh... time capsule.

1942 Calvin Klein makes pretty things
1938 Ted Turner took Jane Fonda away from me (the movies... same thing) ages ago and I've never forgiven him.

The Comedy Central Insider Blog has a video list of Stephen Colbert's 12 best crackups. Never one to miss an opportunity to embed the classic "Prince Charles Scandal" report from his days as a Daily Show senior correspondent, I ask you if that breakdown is still your favorite. As Colbert told me in 2004, it was, "Such a proud moment of professionalism. You work for years crafting cogent satirical essays and the thing that everybody remembers is me making love to a Chiquita and bursting into laughter. What you can't see off camera (embedded video, after the jump) is Jon started laughing first. »

Jane Fonda has claimed that having sex keeps her looking young. Speaking to Germany's Bild, the actress added that she also had to credit plastic surgery for her youthful appearance. She said: "I owe 30% to genes, 30% to good sex, 30% because of sports and a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition, and for the remaining 10%, I have to thank my plastic (more) »

Veteran actress Jane Fonda is embracing old age - because sex is better now she's hit her seventies.
The Barbarella star has undergone a series of painful surgeries recently and now boasts an artificial knee and a titanium hip.
Fonda, who is married to record executive Richard Perry, 67, feels as though she is rebuilding her body from the inside out and it's giving her a new lease of life.
She says, "I owe 30 per cent (of my good looks) to genes, 30 per cent to good sex, 30 per cent because of sports and healthy lifestyle and for the remaining 10 per cent, I have to thank my plastic surgeon. I'm 71, but I'm happier, the sex is better and I understand life better. I don't want to be young again."
But Fonda still has a major goal left to achieve - she is planning a mountain climb once she is fully fit again.
She adds, "I just had surgery on my back, I also have a new knee and a hip made of titanium. I'm slowly falling apart and feel like a walking spare parts depot. I had to have it all repaired because I want to climb the Himalayas. And at 8,000 feet, my body has to run smoothly." »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports
Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.
Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

Madonna was almost Mariah Carey's boss on acclaimed new movie Precious - the pop superstar was among the first people to show an interest in adapting author Sapphire's gritty drama into a film.
The writer decided the Material Girl wasn't a good fit and declined her offer to produce the film, about an obese, illiterate teenager.
Sapphire also turned down other interested parties until moviemaker Lee Daniels convinced her he was the right man for the job.
Sapphire tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "There was this really earnest college student with his backpack on who wanted to do his first film, and then Madonna wanted to produce it. I was like, 'Madonna? I don't think this is her film.'"
And the author recalls one potential producer who had his cast all mapped out: "This one producer told me he had found Precious - and it was going to be (singer/actress) Brandy. Excuse me? I literally almost hung up on him."
And then Daniels came along with a cast of friends and the idea of casting Jane Fonda as Precious' social worker. He eventually settled on Helen Mirren and then turned to Carey when the Brit had to quit the project at the last minute. »

Screenwriter and filmmaker Robert Towne.
Forget It Bob, It’S Chinatown
Robert Towne looks back on Chinatown’s 35th anniversary
By
The haunting trumpet wailing plaintively over the closing credits. The bandage covering star Jack Nicholson’s nose. The best last line of a movie, ever: “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown"; all elements of a film now regarded by scholars, critics and cinefiles alike as one of the greatest pieces of American celluloid ever made. Chinatown was a collaboration between a who’s-who of ‘70s film icons. Directed by Roman Polanski, produced by Robert Evans, written by Robert Towne, starring Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, shot by John Alonso, and scored by Jerry Goldsmith, Chinatown was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1974, but brought home only one: for its writer. Robert Towne was barely 40, and Chinatown his first produced original screenplay, his previous efforts having been literary adaptations, such as 1973’s The Last Detail. »

It's been a long time since Mickey Avalon was passing out demos at Hollywood nightclubs and scrambling to secure a deal with MySpace Records. If you slept on his self-titled 2006 debut — an insanely profane, gutter-hugging punk rap manifesto featuring the classics "Jane Fonda" and "So Rich, So Pretty" — might I suggest you boost a copy from the cut-out bin of your local used record store? (It's what the old Mickey might have done.)
A few years removed from his more sordid days of street chaos, Avalon has been grinding away on his second album for the past few years, recording more than 70 tracks with a bevy of bold-faced names and a couple of unlikely hotshot producers. Calling in from Los Angeles on Thursday (don't worry, Governator — Mickey's mom was driving the car), Avalon gave a preview of what fans can expect from the tentatively titled Electric Gigolo, which is penciled »

Shankman's got spirit!
Do you follow the Oscar show news in the way you follow the Oscars? I don't so much, despite this life I lead constantly writin' about the awards themselves. I care who hosts to some degree but I tend to ignore the rest. But I found it interesting this week when director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) was named as one of the producers and his choreography skills were noted as a reason to be enthused about this assignment. At least he has a sense of humor about his, um, limited history with the big event I was one of Paula Abdul's 'Under the Sea' pirates," Shankman said. "The last time I was at the Oscars, I was in Lycra, with a pirate hat on. Shankman's presence must mean more musical numbers. I'm all for musical numbers provided they rehire Hugh Jackman as host. He was so fine last year. »
