Joe Flaherty on the Glory Days of Second City TV—and Why Old People Aren't Funny

16 November 2009 12:35 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

From December 11 through 13, alumni of improvisational comedy’s most influential training ground, The Second City, will congregate in Chicago to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the theater’s founding. And as part of my reporting on the theater’s history and its illustrious roster of alumni for this month’s Fanfair section (Laugh Factory: Second City Celebrates 50 Years), I interviewed one of my favorite Second City veterans: Joe Flaherty. Fans of another school of comedy—Judd Apatow University—will remember Flaherty from his role as Harold Weir, father of Lindsay and Sam Weir in the beloved but short-lived Freaks and Geeks. But I revere Flaherty for his work on the always funny, often brilliant Second City television series—Sctv—that began in Toronto and eventually moved to the NBC network on Friday nights as a stepsister to Saturday Night Live, which has counted such Second City alumni as Bill Murray, »

Teaser Trailer for Sandler’s Grown Ups

15 November 2009 3:04 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Columbia Pictures has released a teaser trailer for Grown Ups, a comedy (?) starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider, who gets more lines this time.  Also appearing are Salma Hayek, Steve Buscemi, Gary Busey, and Maria Bello.

It’s a wholly unfunny video that leaves you wondering what decade this is and wishing Chris Farley was still around.  But hey, maybe people are dying for movies where Sandler is remarkably less funny than he was a decade ago or David Spade tries the same shtick.  I’m glad Happy Madison Productions put together a little reunion of friends, but will it be any fun for the rest of us?

Here’s a synopsis followed by the trailer from Yahoo:

Five friends and former teammates reunite years later to honor the passing of their childhood basketball coach. With their wives and kids in tow, they spend »

Adam Sandler’s ‘Grown Ups’ Gets A Trailer

13 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Adam Sandler and his ‘Happy Madison’ production company have been on a steady roll since the mid 1990s and their string of films starring Sandler himself. As of late, the company has been known for smaller, yet equally humorous, films such as Grandma’s Boy and the Deuce Bigelow franchise.

Now, the team is reuniting with Sandler’s cast of regulars and newest on-screen partner Kevin James for a brand new comedy called Grown Ups. The film is about a group of five boys who grow apart over the years and finally come together to reconnect and find their childhood once again. I like to call this one something like The Sand Lot: 30 Years Later.

Sandler takes the lead in this one, in his first comedy role since this year’s Funny People, with a familiar cast of characters joining him. David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, and Kevin James »

Teaser Trailer for Adam Sandler's Grown Ups

13 November 2009 3:04 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Adam Sandler's latest movie, Grown Ups, reunites him with several of his Saturday Night Live co-stars, including David Spade, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and Kevin James (filling in for a role that certainly would have gone to Chris Farley had he not passed away). The reunion is fitting, since the movie, which Sandler co-wrote, tells the story of five childhood friends and basketball teammates who reunite 30 years later and spend a weekend together with their families.

The first trailer for Grown Ups has arrived online courtesy of Yahoo!. Directed by Happy Gilmore's Dennis Dugan, Grown Ups opens June 25, 2010. Watch the trailer below.

Grown Ups Trailer: Kevin James Is Just A Chris Farley Fill-in

12 November 2009 10:12 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Putting Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Rob Schneider and Kevin James in the same movie may seem like a good idea, but you know what would be even better? Kick Kevin James out of the equation and fill his slot with some other 90s era SNL alum and make this a full on reunion. The truth is that Kevin James is just a Chris Farley fill in here. He.s standing in Chris.s spot and, were Farley still alive to fill it himself, I think this trailer might actually be funny instead of what it is: Kevin James falling down a mountain in an unfunny manner. Chris Farley, now he knew how to fall down a mountain. Still, here.s the trailer for Grown Ups, a painful reminder of what the world lost. Imagine the movie that could have been, with Chris Farley still alive and maybe Phil »

Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence to Star in Crossover of 90s Characters Sheneneh And Wanda

9 November 2009 12:15 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In what I can only pray is a kind of “That would be fun, we should make that movie someday,”-story because I can’t fathom why Jamie Foxx would want to go back and make a movie starring his stand-up/”In Loving Color” character, Wanda Wayne.  You don’t see Jim Carrey angling for a Fire Marshall Bill movie and Foxx has far more respect and critical appreciation than Carrey.

On the other hand, I completely understand Martin Lawrence digging his stand-up/”Martin” character, Sheneneh Jenkins for a movie since Lawrence has shown he has no interest in expanding beyond the “College Road Trip”/”Big Momma’s House”-type films he’s done for the past several years.  But regardless of their career trajectories, Lawrence and Foxx are planning to star in a feature film crossover of their 90s, ugly women character, “Sheneneh and Wanda”.  Hit the jump for details. »

Video: All Work and No Play Makes Bing a Dull Boy

8 November 2009 12:12 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

First things first: This is not in any way an endorsement of the Bing search engine/decision engine thing. I've never used it, and I'm no more inclined to after seeing this commercial than I was before. But it's a movie-themed commercial, so I thought I'd share.

In fact, it's a highly specific theme. The ad is a spoof of The Shining, and the crux of it is using Bing to find a better hotel than The Overlook. Decent premise, I suppose. I wouldn't be upset if this was a theme they stuck with for a while. It's better than the DirecTV ads, in my opinion, especially the Chris Farley one. »

Commercial spoofs take shots at DirecTV's Chris Farley spot

4 November 2009 2:02 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Controversy raged last weekend as fans and media types reacted to a new DirecTV ad using the late Chris Farley in scenes from Tommy Boy. Now, some aggressive YouTubers are taking their shot at offending some people (with DirecTV execs at the top of the list).

The original ad featured a live action David Spade discussing DirecTV against Farley's antics from Tommy Boy. While Spade insisted Farley wouldn't mind, a lot of his fans took offense to using a dead man to hawk a product.

But the video below, from a YouTube page, The Landline, lights up the satellite TV provider with an edgy send-up of the "dead talk cash" stunt with faked DirecTV ads featuring a pseudo Heath Ledger, John F. Kennedy, and someone else you'll recognize.

There's a conspiracy theory floating around that this is actually clever viral marketing from DirecTV itself -- since no publicity is bad publicity. »

Wait, Now Heath Ledger Has a DirecTV Commercial?

2 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you've been watching playoff baseball these past few weeks, you've probably come across the Tommy Boy DirecTV commercial about, say, 176,000 times. About a week after it began airing, the satellite television company came under fire for a second time for airing parody commercials featuring actors or actresses who died tragically at a young age. The first was a commercial featuring Poltergeist actress Heather O'Rourke, and now folks are really pissed DirecTV is using Chris Farley in a commercial that stars David Spade (who reprises his character from Tommy Boy in a parody of the "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" scene).

If you want my personal opinion, I think DirecTV does this sort of stuff on purpose -- claiming to be "celebrating" the life of a dead celebrity, though what they're really hoping for is that people like us (and several other sites) will give them a bunch of »

Heath Ledger’s DirecTV Commercial

2 November 2009 11:48 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Last week the online world threw a big fuss over DirecTV's newest television advertisement, which features David Spade pimping the satellite service in an altered scene from Tommy Boy, which of course includes his dead friend, comedian Chris Farley. And you may remember, this isn't the first time DirecTV has been accused of profiting off of the dead, as they came under fire last year for the same thing, with a similar ad altering Poltergeist, featuring Heather O'Rourke, an actress who died tragically in 1988 at age 12. When is this disgusting trend going to end? LandlineTV have created a faux DirecTV commercial showing where these tasteless advertising stunts might lead if we don't put a stop to it now -- that's right... Heath Ledger plugs DirecTV in a digitally altered scene from The Dark Knight. And it doesn't end there... Landline has also produced a couple more DirecTV commercials featuring John »

Tony Scott Checking Out Chippendales

29 October 2009 4:33 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Tony Scott is attached to direct a film about Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the founder of the male erotic dance club “Chippendales.”

The story will follow the rise of Banerjee from operating a gas station to owning a chain of night clubs worldwide, according to Variety.  Chippendales’ massive success in the 80’s made him incredibly rich, but a series of lawsuits and increasing competition made him paranoid.  In the early 90’s Banerjee was convicted of conspiracy and attempting to hire a hitman to knock off former choreographers and dancers.  Banerjee ultimately committed suicide in his cell before sentencing.

Scott is attached to a multitude of projects, so this likely won’t be his next.  He’s currently directing Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine.  Looking at his list of possible movies, Scott may never get around to the rigorous research he’ll need to do for this movie.

Side note: Scott also directed Top Gun, »

Spade Regrets Doing DirecTV Ad With Farley

By Wrap Staff

If he had to do it again, David Spade wouldn’t agree to hawking DirecTV alongside a scene with his late friend Chris Farley from “Tommy Boy.”

"I wouldn't want anyone to get a whiff that I'm trying to get something off Chris," he told People magazine. The 30-second commercial, which played during the world series, has been chided by some critics as being tasteless. In it, Farley does his famous “Fat Boy in a Little Coat” routine from the 1995 movie while Spade, inserted into the scene by technology, promotes the satellite service. In the ad, Spad... »

Tony Scott to Direct Chippendales Founder Biopic

29 October 2009 7:10 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Hey remember the Chippendales? Back in the '80s, these buff bow-tie wearing hunks were plastered on the locker of every high school girl, and of course, they were parodied by Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze on Saturday Night Live. But did you ever stop to wonder what the real story was behind this famous group of male strippers? No? Me neither. But apparently there is actually a story to be told, and director Tony Scott feels he is the man to do it. Variety [1] reports that Scott has signed on to direct a biopic about the rise and fall of Chippendales founder Steve Banerjee. He started out pumping gas but after the Chippendales idea took off he became a very rich man. Unfortunately he eventually got tied up in all kinds of criminal activities and ended up in jail, where he died before his trial. The article mentions that »

Tony Scott to Helm ‘Showgirls 3′ with Men in Bowties and Spandex

28 October 2009 11:48 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If you're like me, you love the excess of the 1980s that's most likely directly responsible for the current downfall of our society. Thanks, a lot, parents. Your wanton disregard for decency and love for cocaine flushed us down the toilet. I know the truth. Bret Easton Ellis wrote my 8th grade history book. Luckily, we'll be affronted by that very excess when Denzel Washington enthusiast Tony Scott focuses his attention on the life of Chippendale's inventor Somen "Steve" Banerjee. There's currently no title, so I'm going to go ahead and call it Showgirls 3: Showboys 1: A Rope of Sand. According to Variety, the story will focus on Banerjee who went insane after getting successful and went as far as hiring a hitman to kill a choreographer. If you know anything else about Banerjee, you'll also already be aware that he was a pioneer of the female mud wrestling scene in Los Angeles and once ran »

David Spade Defends Commercial with Chris Farley

When he agreed to do a DirecTV commercial featuring a scene from Tommy Boy with the late Chris Farley, actor David Spade never dreamed anybody would be offended. "Slight shock," Spade told People on Wednesday night of the fallout from the ad, which some commentators saw as tasteless. "These commercials are cool. They're well done. They're clever. And that they would include Tommy Boy in that company, I thought was very flattering." The 30-second spot, airing during the World Series, appears to have been taken directly from the 1995 movie, except that while Farley does his famous "Fat Boy in a Little Coat" routine, »

Farley Fans Upset By TV Ad

28 October 2009 6:36 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Fans of late funnyman Chris Farley are outraged by a new satellite TV ad, which features scenes from the larger-than-life comedian's Tommy Boy movie.

The comic's co-star and friend David Spade revamps the scenes by speaking direct to the camera and plugging DirecTV's service.

Spade says, "I'm here with tons of fun when I could be watching DirecTV," as Farley dances in front of him.

Fans of the heavyweight star, who died from a drug overdose in 1997, are refusing to see the funny side, calling the commercial "distasteful" and "stupid".

Spade has responded in a statement, which reads, "When DirecTV came to me and the Farley family with this idea... we talked and thought it would be a cool way to remind people just how funny Chris was.

"It is a clever homage to a friend and a movie that we loved doing."

A spokesman for DirecTV adds, "We should look to Chris' family and friends for the ultimate opinion on this subject." »
