Sundance Reveals 2010 Non-Competition Slate

17 hours ago | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010.  Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.

The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:

Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew.  John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener.  Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.

The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.

Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin.  I’ve read the script and its great.  More on that as soon as I can.

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.

The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.

All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. 2010 Sundance Film Festival Out-of-Competition Films: Premieres

3 December 2009 2:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Yesterday we gave you a list of all the films playing in-competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  We now have the list of the films playing out-of-competition and they’re divided up into four categories: Premieres, Next, Spotlight, and Park City at Midnight. Since combining these lists would be a lot to read for just one article, we’ve broken it up to give each category its own article.

Know that while there are a lot of films playing in-competition, most of the films to get buzz will be coming from the out-of-competition categories.  First up are the premiers which include John WellsThe Company Men starring Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones and Kevin Costner; Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s The Extra Man starring Katie Holmes, John C. Reilly, and Paul Dano; Get Low starring Robert Duvall and Bill Murray; Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me starring Casey Affleck, »

Full Sundance line-up announced...and it's a doozy!

3 December 2009 2:08 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.

Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).

I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).

[DVD Review] Four Christmases

3 December 2009 1:45 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Taking a full year to make its DVD and Blu-ray debut, Four Christmases proves to be as confusing a holiday release in 2009 as it was in 2008. Even if the name “Four Christmases” leads you to believe the film will make for good Christmas Eve viewing, you’d be wrong. Its name begs for a mid-November release but its actual plot makes it suitable for release in any month of the year, because it’s not really about Christmas at all. It’s about a relationship and how spending time with your family and the family of your significant other offers insight into how they’ve become the person they are. The fact that the events of these films take place around Christmas is a fluke, any major holiday would suffice.

Robert Duvall To Play Gilliam’s Don Quixote?

3 December 2009 11:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Has it really been almost decade since Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote fell apart?  How time flies.

Well it now looks like Gilliam is about to get Don Quixote back in the saddle (albeit without Johnny Depp), and it looks like acting legend Robert Duvall could be replacing original lead Jean Rochefort in the adaptation of Cervantes’ iconic tale.

It has been a long and winding road for Gilliam, who has been trying to get Quixote onto to the big screen for well over ten years. The original film fell apart due to Rochefort falling ill, but the film was plagued by all sorts of problems ranging from floods to financing difficulties. To find out more about Gilliam’s first crack at making The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, check out the fantastic documentary Lost In La Mancha.

Johnny Depp to Play Pancho Villa?

3 December 2009 10:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If there's one actor working today who is worth waiting for, it's Johnny Depp. Unfortunately, not all filmmakers have the luxury of being able to postpone a project long enough to fit the busy star in. His many commitments may, for instance, force Terry Gilliam to replace the actor in his second attempt to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (Robert Duvall claims to be Depp's Jean Rochefort's substitute on that one, though no word yet on Depp's role).

Yet Serbian director Emir Kusturica, who last collaborated with Depp on the underrated and under-seen Arizona Dream 16 years ago, is holding off production of his latest, titled Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers, until 2011 in order for Depp to play the title role. According to Variety, the actor is still merely in negotiations to play the Mexican Revolution hero, whom he would reportedly portray entirely with Spanish dialogue. »

Terry Gilliam Looks To Robert Duvall For His Don Quixote

3 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Don't ever let it be said that Terry Gilliam doesn't have a knack for putting the right performer into the right role. My all-time favorite is his casting of Johnny Depp as Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Today's news though... if things pan out, it's going to be a mighty close second.

The word is that Gilliam wants Robert Duvall to saddle up as the Man of La Mancha in "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote." The actor revealed as much in an interview with Collider while promoting his new movie, "Crazy Heart." Nothing's definite yet, but it sounds like Duvall will have the part as soon as the project firms up.

"I may work with Terry Gilliam next - if they get the money - to play Don Quixote de la Mancha," he told Collider. It always comes back to the money. »

Robert Duvall linked to 'Don Quixote'

3 December 2009 9:39 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Robert Duvall has become the latest star to be linked to the lead role in Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Earlier this year, Gilliam confirmed that he had restarted work on the project, but didn't reveal who had been cast in the movie. However, in an interview with Collider, Duvall has strongly hinted that he will be starring in the resurrected film. "I may work with Terry Gilliam next - if they get the money - to play Don Quixote de la Mancha," he said. "Totally amazing to work with Terry Gilliam. But, once again, the money. Gilliam Knows Who The Man of La Mancha Should Be

3 December 2009 7:14 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Fresh off of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Terry Gilliam is already thinking of his film adaptation of Don Quixote de la Mancha, and according to Collider, he already has his star. Speaking recently with Steve from Collider, Robert Duvall of Crazy Heart confirmed that Gilliam wants him to portray Don Quixote. Said Duvall, "I may work with Terry Gilliam next - if they get the money - to play Don Quixote de la Mancha." Unfortunately, the movie is still up in the air pending the right sort of financing, but hopefully if The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus does well enough, all of that will fall in to place. As to what made Gilliam want to cast Duvall in the part? Apparently the former like Duvall's portrayal of a Cuban barber. You can head over to the source to see the video interview with Duvall.   Source: Collider »

Robert Duvall as Don Quixote?

3 December 2009 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

At the beginning of the year, we heard what many thought was impossible: Terry Gilliam was able to get the rights back to The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, and he was going to do some rewrites and get the project back on track. Some Quixote nibbles hit here or there, but there wasn't a lot of buzz even with Gilliam back at the reigns.

But at least we now know who will (we hope!) star. While talking to Robert Duvall about Crazy Heart, Collider learned that the actor is set to play Don Quixote de la Mancha. Don't believe it? It's on video, with Duvall saying that it would be "totally amazing to work with Terry Gilliam. But, once again, the money. It's so difficult to get the money. He saw me play a Cuban barber one time with Richard Harris and that's what gave him the idea to cast me as Don Quixote. »
