Gadget of the week: Gibson Flying V electric guitar from Bandslam

20 August 2009 2:24 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

As the twee and wholesome Sandra Dee (Olivia Newton John) reinvented herself into Pvc-clad vixen Sandy in sing-along favourite Grease, so teen star Vanessa Hudgens is giving herself quite the onscreen makeover. Gone are the cutesy summer dresses of her most famous screen alter ego, that of Gabriella Montez in Disney phenomenon the High School Musical franchise, replaced by a moodier, Emo vibe as Sa5m in new musical hit Bandslam. This new role sees Hudgens once again unleash her musical talents and as the quiet lead guitarist in the teen band, she opts for the Gibson Flying V electric guitar. Good pick Sa5m (the 5 is silent apparently); we’re making it this week’s gadget spot.

What’s not to love about the Flying V? When Gibson’s president Ted McCarthy searched for a more futuristic looking guitar for his company’s range back in the 50s, he »

Mad Men at the Movies 1.1

10 August 2009 4:33 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

A truism: In New York City, people are often engaged in the arts. They talk movies, theater, books. One of my favorite things about Mad Men, Matt Weiner's fascinating series about the men and women of "Sterling Cooper" a mid level Manhattan ad agency, is how it references the arts of the 50s and 60s. In most filmed entertainment, other arts are generally only used in facile ways to underline themes, tell contemporary (and instantly dated) jokes or crudely reference an era. Mad Men weaves them in as smartly as the rest of its period details (costuming, sets, politics) to steep you in the world the characters are actually living in or the world they wish they were living in.

With Season 3 debuting this weekend it's a good a time to begin looking at the series' cinematic shout outs. It's also a sneaky way to work a great television series into The Film Experience. »

Gidget The Remake

29 July 2009 11:27 AM, PDT | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Here is one couple that I never saw coming: Zac Efron and Miley Cyrus. Two of Disney's brightest stars are in talks to star as a couple in the remake of the 1959 movie Gidget. Teen Queen Miley Cyrus is set to play Gidget, a role that was played by both Sandra Dee and Sally Field while Zac Efron will play the love interest. Fan favorite Brittany Snow is also slated to appear in the film which at this point is only rumored to be in the works. For those of you who has no idea what or who a Gidget is, let us take you back in time when surfing and sunshine ruled the world. At the time in 1957, Gidget was based off creator's Frederick Kohner's teenage daughter Kathy. The film adaption followed Gidget as we surfed and hung around with her friends in Malibu. After the movie debuted »

Auto of the week: De Luxe Ford from Grease

12 May 2009 3:18 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

The toe-tapping teenage musical Grease is out for the first time on Blu-Ray this week and so to celebrate we’re going truly retro for our latest auto spot with a car so cool it comes not only with a nickname, but a song as well. Scoff all you like, but does your car have a song? Thought not. And from these song lyrics we know we’re in for some motoring magic, over to leader of the T-Birds, Danny Zucko (John Travolta) to explain. “Why this car is automatic. It’s systematic. It’s hydromatic. Why it’s Grease Lightning, Grease Lightning!” Couldn’t have put it better myself, Danny. Yes, this week’s auto spot is the Ford De Luxe from Grease.

As new girl in school Sandra Dee (Olivia Newton-John) goes from prim and proper goodie two-shoes to Pvc-clad vixen, so this car also undergoes its own makeover. »

DVD release inspirations including Role Models

11 May 2009 3:29 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Good morning and welcome to the week Boxwishers. This week we’re still basking in the ray of sci-fi sunshine that is J.J. Abram’s reboot of Star Trek with a look at some of the best tie-in movie merchandise and even ways to live the movie (more on that tomorrow). We’re continuing our series of summer fashion features (missed last week’s Ray-Ban sunglasses article? Catch up here) with a look at women’s beachwear and are getting all inquisitive with Tom Hanks for Angels and Demons. But before all of that kicks off, we’re running down today’s big home entertainment releases with goofy comedy Role Models leading the pack, if not the way…

[DVD Review] Grease: Rockin' Rydell Edition

7 May 2009 12:40 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Grease has been established as a film musical institution. The songs are memorable, the cast is superb and the story serves as the perfect connection to string you along from one melodic fix to the next. Even if it's weird to watch a collection of 20-somethings act like high school kids and sing about beauty school, summer nights and Sandra Dee, you'd be hard pressed to deny that Grease doesn't pull it off with a charming level of panache. Converting a play to film often comes at some expense to the material (this remains true in Grease), but the final product of Grease excels rather than falters. Director Randal Kleiser found the perfect formula for stage to film translation; as a result Grease has lingered as a classic musical beloved by adolescents and adults alike.

Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny Zuko (John Travolta) had a summer together that, if »

Real Or Imagined: Homoeroticism In 60S Beach Movies

13 April 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Tom Lisanti

To get in a warm weather mood with summer not approaching fast enough, here is a look at Hollywood surf movies from a different and albeit biased perspective.  Gay men are always looking for gay subtext in movies and TV, and I am no exception.  Am I reading more into these films? Probably—but it was sure a lot of fun doing the research.

The Sixties beach movie craze began with Gidget (1959) starring Sandra Dee and James Darren, a fictionalized look at teenager Kathy Kohner’s surfing escapades in Malibu during the mid-Fifties.  It was groundbreaking as the movie contributed to the mass dissention of surfers on the beaches of Malibu and started a series of surf-theme films such as Gidget Goes Hawaiian and Ride the Wild Surf.  The surf movie soon morphed into the beach-party film, whose heyday was from 1963 through 1965, where surfing was only used »

Cinema Retro columnist Tom Lisanti has paired with actress Gail Gerber to write her fascinating autobiography that details her experiences in Hollywood as a young starlet in the 1960s as well as her career as a writer and Terry Southern's longtime companion. The book, Trippin' With Terry Southern, is due out in June. Here is an excerpt:

Hollywood, summer of 1964.  I had been living in California for almost a year now and still felt like a fish out of water.  Growing up in Canada where I studied ballet from the time I was a small child, Los Angeles was mystifying to me with its palm trees, bright sunlight forever contrasting with the deep shade, and its superficial inhabitants.  But I readily admit I was sort of a snob myself and didn’t know »

Old Troy Network

26 January 2009 11:21 PM, PST | NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news »

If he's remembered at all, early 1960s teen idol Troy Donahue (1936-2001) is perhaps best known today for being name-checked in the song "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" from "Grease."

The Zac Efron of his era and a one-time journalism major at Columbia University, Donahue rose to stardom opposite Dee in by far his most famous film, the romantic melodrama "A Summer Place" (1959).

Warner Bros. had signed Donahue for the TV series "Surfside Six" and utilized him as a big-screen replacement for another contract star, »
