Monsters, Inc. Blu-ray Review

19 November 2009 9:05 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I opined when it came to Up that it’s hard to judge the Pixar canon because there are so few missteps, but when it comes to favorites, everyone’s got to have one. You have to at some point think of which one you love the most. It’s not like they’re your children. Though a case can be made for almost every single one of their films, the one that gets me the hardest, and the one that always works me over like a sap is Monsters Inc. My review of it after the jump.

In the city of Monstropolis, their power supply comes from the screams of children, and no one is better at getting young children to freak out than James P. Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman). His best friend is Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), who he lives with and also handles his prep. The »

Inside track on the Oscars' supporting actor race

18 November 2009 11:22 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

At this point on the derby track, with many films like "Invictus" and "The Lovely Bones" still unseen, it appears that there are three Oscar front-runners for best supporting actor: Christoph Waltz ("Inglourious Basterds"), Christopher Plummer ("The Last Station") and Alec Baldwin ("It's Complicated"). Waltz has been ahead for the last few months and may remain there, but remember this category is notoriously known as the veteran's achievement award (Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine," James Coburn in "Affliction"). Two notable veterans stand out. Plummer starred in Oscar best pictures "The Sound of Music" and "A Beautiful Mind" and won many industry honors (three Emmys plus several film critics' awards), but he's never been nominated... »

Disney-Pixar Scares Up New Release of "Monsters, Inc."

12 November 2009 11:25 PM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

The Disney-Pixar movie "Monsters, Inc." is currently available on Blu-ray Hi-Def for the first time.

The 2001 animated feature was released on a special 4-disc Blu-ray edition on Nov. 10. The latest release of the fourth full-length film from animation studio Pixar includes all new features compiled with its digitally re-mastered presentation of the friendliest monsters you've ever seen.

John Goodman and Billy Crystal voice Sulley and Mike, the top scaring team in the city of Monstropolis, which runs on a special energy source: the screams of terrified children. It's all in a day's work for the two, but when a closet door is accidentally left open, a child (Mary Gibbs) walks into their world causing all sorts of panic that only they can fix.

Also filling out the voice cast are Steve Buscemi, James Coburn, Jennifer Tilly, John Ratzenberger, Bonnie Hunt, Frank Oz and Bob Peterson.

Monsters Inc. - Blu-ray Review

11 November 2009 4:27 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Monsters Inc. scores on two fronts. It.s another excellent Blu-ray from Disney and it.s another classic film from Pixar. Pixar is obviously one of my favorite film production companies and Disney is certainly moving high on the list of best Blu-ray producers. The place is Monstropolis and it is run on fear. Most literally as the creatures that hide under children.s beds scaring those same kids produces energy that powers the city. Monsters Inc., the corporation responsible for gathering that energy, is run by Henry J. Waternoose (James Coburn) and the top scare producer in the factory is James .Sulley. Sullivan (John Goodman). He may look scary but he.s a loveable lug. His best friend is »

Blu-ray Review

Monster’s Inc.

Directed by: Pete Docter

Cast: (Voices) Billy Crystal, John Goodman, James Coburn

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: G

Due Out: November 10, 2009

Plot: In the world of bedtime monsters, the screams of children are a valuable source of energy. At the same time, kids are also considered toxic beings. All heck breaks loose when an innocent child named Boo crosses into the monster world, causing two professional frighteners, Mike (Crystal) and Sully (Goodman), to do anything necessary to protect her and return her to her bedroom.

Who’S It For? The closet and under the bed may still be points of terrifying uncertainty for younger children, but the monsters in this film are nothing to stay away from. Young kids and very old kids alike will able to enjoy this funny and thoughtful film.

Fantastic Fest 09: Review of Mandrill

Year: 2009

Directors: Ernesto Díaz Espinoza

Writers: Ernesto Díaz Espinoza

Trailer: link

Review by: rochefort

Rating: 6 out of 10

Take a dash of 007, "Kill Bill", and "Shaft", throw in some cool Latin disco, spice it up with some badass martial arts and gunplay, and ground it with an extremely appealing turn from its lead, and you get "Mandrill", Ernesto Diaz Espinoza's sorta-retro martial arts/hitman movie that joins the ever-growing list of sharply-designed revisionist B movies. This time around the riff is on the sort of James Bond knockoffs that every country tends to make a million of, and stars Marko Zaror, Chile's answer to The Rock.

The title character is a young hitman on the hunt for Don Mario (Luis Alarcon), the man who killed his mother when he was just a lad, and Mandrill's latest assignment conveniently requires him to kill said one-eyed killer, now a drug »

In Profile: Bruce Willis

1 October 2009 4:22 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Bruce Willis is not a bad actor. He just occasionally acts in bad movies. It’s not entirely his fault either. Shall we put it down to “bold choices” that didn’t work out? If in a charitable mood, sure. There has always been a touch of uncertainty about Willis. He does not appear to be a natural storyteller.

Let’s say acting is an egotistical, ridiculous career option for anybody. Consider it. Even before the lucrative potential is taken into account – pretending to be other people is rather odd. Actors take up a lifetime of lying and fantasying in some vainglorious search for truth (fame and wealth too, if we are being cynical). Is it completely stupid or brave? Actors as pathological liars or sociopaths is a salient thought.

The American studios created the film star and it destroys them. Maintaining a lifelong and popular career in such a fickle, »

New DVD Label Arrives with a Silent Scream

24 September 2009 1:09 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Man, it has been a long time since I've heard anyone even mention the movie Silent Scream. It seems as if it's been lost a good long time. Thankfully a new DVD label known as Scorpion Releasing is changing all that, and the DVD will be hitting home in November! Hell yeah!

From the Press Release

A new DVD label, Scorpion Releasing, announces the 11/24/09 DVD release of one of the highest grossing slasher films from the golden age of the slasher genre, reaching number one at the box office in February of 1980. For the first time on DVD anywhere in the world, Scorpion Releasing is proud to present Silent Scream, the classic slasher film featuring Barbara Steele in one of her most terrifying roles. Out of circulation for decades, the film has recently been mastered in HiDefinition by Scorpion Releasing, and will be sure to shock a whole new generation of horror fans. »

Classic Cameos: The Muppet Movie

21 September 2009 2:33 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I think our original idea behind the Classic Cameos series was to pick one memorable cameo from a movie. However, The Muppet Movie is a long string of cameos, and why should I have to highlight only one? So many people pop up throughout the 1979 film -- my favorites are James Coburn, who owns the El Sleezo nightclub; Carol Kane's very silly "Myth? Yeth?" running gag; Mel Brooks in what's really more of an actual role than a cameo, as the mad scientist; and Orson Welles at the end of the film.

If that sounds like enough cameos, I've barely started. The Muppet Movie also has appearances from Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn and Telly Savalas, Paul Williams, Cloris Leachman, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Edgar Bergen (and Charlie McCarthy), Elliot Gould and Big Bird. Director James Frawley supposedly appears onscreen briefly, but I'm not sure I'd recognize him. I've included »

Walter Hill: The Hollywood Interview

Director Walter Hill.

Kicking Ass with Walter Hill

by Jon Zelazny

Action flicks. Two-fisted tales. Guy movies. Whatever you want to call them, writer, producer, and director Walter Hill is one of the living masters, with a resume full of classics from The Getaway (1972), to the Alien series, and the definitive eighties action-comedy blockbuster, 48 Hrs. (1982).

2009 marks the 30th anniversary of The Warriors (1979), Hill’s surreal “street gang on the run” cult classic, and his breakout success as a director.

Jon: A couple years ago, you did an audio commentary and on-camera intro for a new DVD edition of The Warriors. It was the first time I’d ever seen you; is it my imagination, or have you kept a low profile over the years?

Walter Hill: I’d never done a commentary before on one of my films. I don’t like the idea of explaining a movie; I »

Rare Movie Alert! "Hard Contract" And "The Last Shot You Hear" Tomorrow On Fox Movie Channel, USA

8 September 2009 11:11 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Lee Pfeiffer

Tomorrow (Wednesday)  afternoon at 2:00 Pm (Est) the Fox Movie Channel will present Hard Contract, an offbeat 1969 thriller that casts James Coburn as an international man of mystery: a hired assassin who travels the world on behest of an equally mysterious employer (Burgess Meredith) to kill off high profile targets for reasons never specified. What makes the film so intriguing is Coburn's character: he's charming but completely without morals and will happily kill even his closest associates if the money is right. He also has sexual hang-ups that preclude even making small talk with the prostitutes he hires (look for young Karen Black among them). The plot thickens when Coburn meets socialite Lee Remick, who is determined to find out the truth about his background- at any cost. The great supporting cast includes Lili Palmer, Patrick Magee and Sterling Hayden. The film is followed by a telecast of another oddball thriller, »

In a weird version of corpse bride, you can sleep with Marilyn Monroe for eternity, something her husband, former Yankee great, Joe Dimaggio, chose not to do. The burial vault that Dimaggio once owned above hers is for sale. Like real estate, it’s all about location, location, location, and you will have company. Playboy magazine mogul Hugh Hefner owns the vault next to Monroe’s. The burial site, Westwood Village Memorial Park is also home to many celebrities, including Dean Martin, James Coburn, Roy Orbison, Truman Capote, Natalie Wood and recently deceased Farrah Fawcett. »

Joe Dante Classic Film Festival Now At New Beverly Cinema, L.A.

The off-beat 1967 comedy The President's Analyst is among the films being screened by Joe Dante. Director Joe Dante has sent us this press release regarding an exciting classic and cult movie festival he is hosting at the New Beverly Cinema in L.A. Don't miss his appearance on August 5 when he and Bruce Dern will be screening The Burbs and Smile.

I had so much fun hosting last year's film series that we're doing it again at The New Beverly Cinema, one of La's last bastion of movie worship! Remember, Movies Are Your Best Entertainment!  Down With Pay TV!   Aug. 5-6 The Burbs/Smile  - It's cheeky of me to pair my own behavioral neighborhood comedy with Michael Ritchie's brilliantly observed social satire (American Beauty eat your heart out!), but both feature one of the movies' best, most underappreciated actors, Bruce Dern. Spielberg Takes The (Matt) Helm

29 July 2009 11:45 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

A series of blockbuster spy novels may be next on Steven Speilberg's hitlist, according to Variety. Donald Hamilton wrote 27 novels in his Matt Helm series, which Paramount clearly hope to spin into a Bourne-like new franchise.Helm is actually an American "counter-agent" rather than a spy, although his job is still to neutralise enemy agents, so we're not entirely clear what the difference is. A bit more Jack Ryan than James Bond, we guess. He was played previously by Dean Martin in a series of sixties movies intended to spoof the Bond franchise (a bit like the James Coburn Flint films), but beyond using the books' titles they didn't bear much relation to their source material. Martin's version of Helm was a big influence on Austin Powers.Paul Attanasio's latest incarnation of the script is apparently much more serious and updates the setting from the Cold War to the present day. »

Circle of Iron Blu-ray Review

15 July 2009 3:33 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Circle of Iron (1978) was initially conceived as a "dream project" by famed martial artist/actor Bruce Lee in conjunction with two of his students James Coburn (The Great Escape, Our Man Flint) and Sterling Silliphant (Oscar winner for screenplay on In The Heat of the Night) in the late 1960's. Due to disagreements over shooting choices and prejudices in the industry against Asians (especially with no leading man experience) helming a movie, the script was shelved. Once Bruce made a name for himself with titles such as Fists of Fury (1971) and Enter the Dragon (1973), Hollywood was much more accommodating. Ironically Lee was scheduled to meet for discussions about finally bringing the Silent Flute (as the script was titled) to fruition only one day after his untimely death in 1973. David Carradine, of the TV series Kung Fu (1972-75) in a role that Lee coincidentally was in contention for (according to Lee's wife, »

DVD Playhouse—July 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.
