It's hard to say whether it's been the stifling heat or former Warner Independent chief Mark Gill's much-talked about "the sky really is falling" speech (published in full at indieWire here) that gave attendees of this year's Los Angeles Film Festival a sense of their own mortality. Then again, it could just be the way in which the effects of life-altering events have been examined in several of the festival's films, particularly in the narrative section.
When Gill, now heading up the indie shingle The Film Department, spoke at the adjoining film financing conference on the first Saturday of the festival, he decried the indie film marketplace as standing on the brink of oblivion, saying, "if you decide to make a movie budgeted under $10 million on your own tomorrow, you have a 99.9% chance of failure." On that basis, it's possible that "Winged Creatures," an ensemble drama

Actress Kate Beckinsale's nine-year-old daughter is not a fan of her mother's movies - and refuses to even watch them.
The Pearl Harbor star admits she struggles to get little Lily to sit through any of her films, because she would rather watch Marilyn Monroe in classic comedy Some Like It Hot.
She tells Britain's Ok! magazine, "She won't watch any of them, not any!
"We tried it actually - we were on holiday and Van Helsing was on pay per view and Lily was like, 'No, no! No, no.'
"She likes Some Like It Hot - that's her favourite movie."

Actress Kate Beckinsale has praised her husband Len Wiseman and the father of her child Michael Sheen for not letting their pride interfere with the welfare of her daughter Lily.
The English beauty had Lily in 1999 while she was in a relationship with her Underworld co-star Sheen - but she ended their longterm romance in 2003 after falling for the vampire film's director Wiseman.
Beckinsale and Wiseman married a year later and they now live in Los Angeles with nine-year-old Lily.
And the 34-year-old is glad both she and Wiseman have remained on good terms with Sheen, because it means her daughter can enjoy the best of both worlds with her parents.
She tells Britain's Ok! magazine, "I've been very lucky to have two marvellous men in Len and Michael, they've got no awkward feelings about parenting Lily and working things out.
"It's so sad when adults can't find it in themselves to get along for the sake of a child. I'm very proud of both of them that they haven't let any potential awkwardness or strangeness affect our little family. I kknow some women who aren't so fortunate and whose children suffer as a result."

British actress Kate Beckinsale was unusually thankful to be at the mercy of a band of paparazzi during a recent car chase along the California coast - they rescued her when she ran out of fuel.
The Underworld star was out with husband Len Wiseman and nine-year-old daughter Lily, when her SUV spluttered to a halt.
The pair pulled over to the side of the road before turning to the photographers for help.
Wiseman admitted to one snapper: "(This is) the one time we're actually really glad you're following us. Can you help us get some gas? We just ran out."

Kate Beckinsale has reportedly demanded a body double for her latest film - because she feels self-conscious about the size of her bottom.
The slim star, 34, allegedly refused to bare her derriere while shooting a shower scene in new movie Whiteout - forcing producers to hire a $2,000 (GBP1,000)-a-day model to stand in for the star.
A source tells Britain's The Mail On Sunday, "The script called for her character to be filmed nude in a shower, focusing in on her bottom and thighs.
"Kate insisted on a double being hired. She was quite open on the set about not liking her body and said she particularly loathed her bottom and was not comfortable baring it."

Actors Kevin Spacey, Kate Beckinsale and Hugh Grant helped to raise more than $4 million (GBP2 million) for cancer research, after attending a charity auction in London on Saturday.
U2 frontman Bono, Pirates of the Caribbean hunk Orlando Bloom and his model girlfriend Miranda Kerr were also in attendance at the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation Gala, which was held in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace - the former home of British royal King Henry VIII.
Philanthropist Bono made a surprise appearance on stage hailing the work of the organisation, before making way for Notting Hill star Grant to begin the auction.
And Grant showed his generous side by bidding $250,000 (GBP125,000) for a chance to have dinner with the former president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, who founded the organisation. The money will go towards funding cancer research in the U.K. and Russia, reports People.com.
Bloom admitted he was thrilled to be a part of the event - and would have loved the chance to dine with the former Soviet leader had it not been such an expensive auction item.
He says, "It is amazing to come and support something associated with Mikhail Gorbachev because of what he did. He's going to go down in history because of the way he changed the world."

Orlando Bloom's romance with Miranda Kerr continues to blossom. The actor and his model girlfriend made an appearance together Saturday at the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation Gala fundraiser in London – and were practically inseparable. "Life is great at the moment," Bloom, 31, told People. "I've just finished a play in the West End, which I really enjoyed, and am about to start filming a new movie. It really couldn't be any better." The sense of occasion wasn't lost on the Pirates of the Caribbean star, either. "It is amazing to come and support something associated with Mikhail Gorbachev because of what he did,

Kate Beckinsale has laughed off reports of a rivalry with Eva Longoria Parker - insisting her fellow actress is too "tiny" to be her competition.
Beckinsale has spent a lot of time with Desperate Housewives star Longoria Parker since moving to Los Angeles, sparking speculation the pair befriended one another to further their acting careers.
But the Underworld star insists she doesn't regard the Texan beauty as a rival - because their dissimilar physiques prevent them from competing for film roles.
She says, "How could Eva and I be up for the same parts? She's tiny and I'm fascinated by little people.
"Having said that, I feel like a giant. I've always felt a clunky girl. I could ski home on my feet."

Actress Kate Beckinsale has taken aim at those who call pal Victoria Beckham grumpy, insisting the former singer is actually "a hoot".
The Pearl Harbor star, who met Beckham through mutual friend Eva Longoria Parker, claims the public's perception of the former Spice Girl as a non-smiling curmudgeon couldn't be further from the truth.
She explains, "Just recently I've been seeing a lot of Victoria (Beckham). Victoria is hilarious. That's the thing I like about her most. She's a hoot.
"She is also a very normal girl. We have a good laugh and it's great when suddenly people get your jokes and reference points."

British actress Kate Beckinsale isn't bothered she can't cook - because she makes up for it in the bedroom.
The Pearl Harbour star admits she is a terrible wife because she cannot cook a decent meal for her husband Len Wiseman.
But she insists she makes up for it in other areas.
She tells British magazine Glamour, "I'm the worst wife in the cooking department. I always thought you can't be good at food and sex, but you can always order the food in.
"I'd rather he didn't order in the sex."

Kate Beckinsale has ruled out having more children - insisting her daughter Lily doesn't need any siblings.
Beckinsale says her nine-year-old daughter Lily - from her relationship with actor Michael Sheen - is so well behaved, she doesn't feel the need to add to her brood.
She says, "We're such a merry little bunch as we are. Maybe I will at some point but I feel I have everything I want.
"Lily is the perfect child. She is really so much fun and into the same things as me.

She says, "I am dreading the day Lily brings home a boy. But she and the Beckham boys get on really well. So if she did have to have a boyfriend, then I suppose Brooklyn would get my seal of approval."

Kate Beckinsale is honoured her father Richard remains a revered actor in her native England - because it helps her remember him.
The late actor, star of British sitcoms Porridge and Rising Damp, was just 31 when he suffered a massive heart attack in his sleep - leaving his wife, actress Judy Loe, to bring up a then five-year-old Kate.
And the Underworld star insists she is grateful to Britain for keeping his memory alive - since she has little recollection of her dad.
She says, "I do have memories, but when you're that young, you're not really at the conversational stage of a relationship.
"He's still such a huge figure in England, which I find moving and impressive all these years later, but at the time, I used to get him confused with both God and John Lennon because John Lennon died a couple of years later, and I remember getting the whole thing a bit mixed up."

Transformers star Megan Fox has been named the Sexiest Woman in the World in Fhm magazine's annual list of lovelies.
The actress/model steals the crown from pregnant Jessica Alba who topped the hot hitlist in 2007.
Alba falls to number three on the 14th annual countdown, behind Fox and Jessica Biel, while Elisha Cuthbert and Scarlett Johansson round out the new top five.
Fox debuted on the Fhm list in 2006, when she came in at 68; she jumped up just three spots last year.
Fhm bosses had more votes than ever before from readers who selected the girls on the 2008 list, but few favoured former hotties Victoria Beckham and Britney Spears, who rounded out the top 100 at numbers 99 and 100 respectively.
The top 10 on Fhm's 100 Sexiest Women in the World list is:
1. Megan Fox
2. Jessica Biel
3. Jessica Alba
7. Hilary Duff
9. Blake Lively
10. Kate Beckinsale
