George Clooney Explains Why 'Batman & Robin' Should've Won Him An Oscar

4 December 2009 7:14 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Recently I attended the premiere for “Up in the Air,” and had a conversation with a friend about how amazing it is that “Sexiest Man Alive” regular George Clooney has somehow managed to dodge the vitriol that dudes typically have towards beefcake leading men. My theory on how he gets away with it? The guy loves to make fun of "Batman & Robin."

Remember when you were a kid, and bullies would pick on kids to feel them out? Some would spaz and just make things worse. Others would laugh at themselves before the bullies got a chance, thereby being in on the joke rather than being the butt of it. And in the years since he played the world's greatest detective in Joel Schumacher’s disastrously awful 1997 superhero film, Clooney has been smart enough to laugh along with the rest of us.

Take the red carpet, for example, when I »

Terminator Franchise Hangs In The Balance

3 December 2009 5:51 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Last year’s Terminator: Salvation might have been a title too far. It now looks likely McG’s 2008 sci-fi actioner will be a one-off. Halycon Holding Group, who hold the rights, have filed for bankruptcy and will be flogging the series to the highest bidder. Who will buy?

Terminator Salvation’s makers initially planned a new trilogy, but this now seems unlikely to happen. Will Christian Bale ever return? After “that” on-set incident reduced him to a worldwide laughing stock? Not likely. He and Shane Halbutt are “done professionally.”

Halycon Holding Group announced, that:

“Over the past few weeks, Halcyon and its professionals have engaged in in-depth discussions and negotiations with numerous serious potential buyers, including several major movie studios,” Halcyon said. “In addition, a number of attractive refinancing alternatives have also been presented. In order to maximize the value of a transaction for all of the company’s creditors and stakeholders, »

DVD of the Week: 'Terminator Salvation.' Plus: 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian'

2 December 2009 11:47 AM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Director McG is all about spectacular visuals, and in that regard, this underrated fourth in the Terminator series delivers a swift, unapologetic punch, eschewing slick CGI a la Star Trek for gritty, grimy robots and clunky contraptions that hark back to times when sets and props were built, not designed on a computer screen by a Mac drone in a cube. Christian Bale makes an okay, Dark Knight-growly John Connor, but he's upstaged by Sam Worthington as a mysterious newcomer to the human resistance that is now at war with the machines and Skynet in 2018. Ultimately, this mixed bag doesn't match up to the first two Terminators, but it's well worth a look. And thankfully, the Bd release will also include an R-rated version. Blu-ray viewers will get an extra treat with a special Bd...

Tom Hardy Talks Mad Max

2 December 2009 11:24 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In recent months there have been many rumblings about Mad Max 4, specifically entitled,  Mad Max: Fury Road. All have been covered here on Screen Rant – but the main one is that British actor Tom Hardy (Bronson) was being eyed to replace Mel Gibson in the titular role of Max.

No official announcement has been made about the role, but Hardy spoke exclusively with MTV about his possible appearance in the film – and he seems to be as uncertain (or unforthcoming) about the details of the film (which is due to shoot down-under next year) as director George Miller and Mel Gibson.

MTV’s Josh Horowitz quizzed the actor about the film and Hardy stated that he was far from a lock for the film:

George hasn’t actually confirmed that. It’s strongly coming in my direction. I would be preparing for that role.”

Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Celebs Return to Their Most Iconic Roles for Photo Shoot

2 December 2009 6:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

To celebrate their 20th birthday, Empire Magazine invited a whole ton of actors and actresses to ever-so-briefly reprise their most iconic roles for a pretty cool photo shoot. Curious to see what Arnold Schwarzenegger would look like now if he donned those famous black sunglasses and threw on his best badass pose for a photo in front of a motorcycle? Or what about wanting to see Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster reunited for the first time since the Oscar-winning Silence of the Lambs?

Other cool photo ops include Mel Gibson wearing face paint in honor of Braveheart, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost looking back at Shaun of the Dead, Christian Bale returning to his American Psycho days, Ben Stiller showing us all that Zoolander totally deserves a sequel, Gerard Butler giving us his best 300 roar, Laurence Fishburne calling back Morpheus and more. It's a pretty cool idea, even if Tom Cruise »

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 12/1

Terminator Salvation

I suspect McG's movie will play really well at home, with the volume turned up and the surround sound explosions masking the lack of a compelling story and lackluster performances. Everyone from Christian Bale to Anton Yelchin to Sam Worthington to Bryce Dallas Howard was overshadowed by the special effects and the robots running rampant. However, at home you can walk in and out, pause, rewind, and replay -- and yes, freeze frame Moon Bloodgood's extremely brief topless scene -- without harming an essentially harmless movie. Rent it. Also available in a 3-disc Blu-ray edition, with theatrical and director's cut, alternate endings, featurettes, and more

[DVD Review] Terminator Salvation

1 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It’s actually somewhat interesting the way this latest in the once glorious Terminator franchise very loudly and very brightly snuck up on everyone, and there are a few contributing factors. Firstly, a really good cast was cobbled together. Christian Bale is a star and Sam Worthington is a star on the rise. Secondly, to their credit they cut a really good trailer filled with the tease of possibility and some slick, pulsating action. Then as the release date began to loom large on the horizon the entire project was overshadowed by that now infamous rant that saw Bale relentlessly berate Dp Shane Hurlbut in a wide variety of different accents for walking through a shot. A rant laced with such mean-spirited overkill it will likely define Bale for some time.

Finally, in the weeks leading up to the opening weekend, anyone who truly gave a shit about the franchise »

'Terminator Salvation' Blows Up The World, Ben Stiller Spends The Night And More, In The DVD Report For Dec. 1

1 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Let's get this out of the way right off to bat: I enjoyed "Terminator Salvation." I know I'm sitting in a somewhat lonely circle, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for big, loud robots, cyborgs, whatever you want to call them, and "Salvation" has some jaw-droppingly cool scenes. The film is now hitting store shelves, and leads the DVD Report for Tuesday, December 1.

The studio was taking a gamble when it greenlit a fourth film in the venerable "Terminator" franchise. After a lackluster response to 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," many fans advocated for putting the series to bed, either to breathe or permanently. But away we went with director McG at the helm, and Christian Bale and Anton Yelchin -- two figures with legitimate geek cred -- attached to the budding sequel. The resulting story saw a band of resistance fighters battling to save humanity from the ever-evolving SkyNet. »

Public Enemies Blu-ray Review

1 December 2009 6:52 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I root for Michael Mann even when he missteps, because he is one of America’s premier filmmakers, and one of the great visionaries of cinema. And, really, he’s only been building up steam. TV seemed to occupy him in the 80’s (even with three efforts, the best being Manhunter), but it wasn’t until 1995 that he really struck gold with Heat, and followed that up with The Insider. Both of which qualify as two of the best films of the 90’s. Since then it’s been a film every two or three years, and though none have been as great as those two, they run from the interesting to awesome. Public Enemies falls more into the interesting than awesome camp, but it is definitely solid, albeit familiar ground. My review after the jump.

Review: 'Terminator Salvation' on Blu-ray

30 November 2009 3:37 PM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

There’s no doubt that when James Cameron made the first Terminator movie in 1984 he figured on telling his story and moving on. Little did he know that 25 years later, it would remain a cultural touchstone spawning sequels, a television series, books, comics, and stuff.

Wisely, Cameron also knew when it was time to move on. Coaxed back for the sequel, he delivered a high-octane action thriller that also pushed the limits of movie technology as we marveled at some of the earliest CGI that had our collective jaws drop.

After the ownership got passed around like a bowl of potato chips, The Halcyon Company now controls the destiny of SkyNet and their progeny. Earlier this year, they offered up Terminator Salvation, moving the story to right after Judgment Day in 2018, but before someone thought to send Kyle Reese back in time. The fourth feature, therefore, is both a sequel »

[DVD Review] Evergreen

30 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's pretty widely known that teenagers are selfish and ungrateful little snots. Evergreen, a film from 2004 that only recently was released, drills this into the viewer's brain.

Henrietta, Henri, for short, played by the relatively unknown Addie Land, and her mother Kate, played by Cara Seymour (the chick who was demolished by Christian Bale's chainsaw in American Psycho) have fallen on hard times and have to move in with Cara's mother (Lynn Cohen), who lives in grubby leaky shack on the edge of town. Henri's mother is the type who goes out of her way to do everything she can for her daughter, to give her the things she didn't have when she was a kid.

On paper this sounds great, but, if you recall your time in high school, the greatest thing your folks could do for you was to just leave you alone. Cara just wants to »

Terminator Salvation (Director’s Cut) Blu-ray Review

29 November 2009 10:01 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I’m finding that there are some movies that I like more upon a second viewing. It could be that once expectations are set aside (either upheld or smashed upon the first viewing) that it’s easier to accept a movie a bit more… forgivingly. While I certainly still don’t love Terminator Salvation (click link for my initial review), I’ll have to admit I found myself enjoying it more the second time around.

Terminator Salvation is released on DVD and Blu-ray this week, and I’ll be giving you the specs and a review of the Blu-ray director’s cut version right here.

The film wasn’t the huge hit the studio was hoping for in the U.S., bringing in only $125Mm. However it did much better overseas, bringing it’s worldwide total to a respectable $371Mm. As far as reviews go, it earned a 32% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes, »

A Serious Man and the odd movie out

A Serious Man may be getting rave reviews – but it's like nothing the Coens have made before. Joe Queenan on weird one-offs and the directors who make them

About halfway through the very funny, very disturbing, very ethnic new film A Serious Man, the modern-day Job who is the serious man in question climbs up on to the roof of his ghastly 1960s Minneapolis suburban home and tries to adjust the antenna to improve his TV reception. Beleaguered on all fronts – conjugally, professionally, medically – Larry Gopnik, a dorky physics professor who may be about to lose his job and is very likely to lose his family, is a bright, principled Jewish man whose children have begged him to fix the antenna so they can watch F Troop, an idiotic 1960s comedy. Many of Larry's travails unfold as songs from Jefferson Airplane's seminal 1967 LP Surrealistic Pillow play in the background. »
