Sizing Up the Alec Baldwin—Joe Lieberman Match

10 July 2009 10:36 AM, PDT | From Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news

Photographs from NBC and the office of Sen. Joe Lieberman. On television, Alec Baldwin plays a network executive who loves heartless capitalism, corporate jargon, and the Republican Party. In real life, however, he hates all of these things. To say Baldwin is a passionate Democrat would be an understatement: After all, the actor has accused Dick Cheney of being a terrorist and describes the past eight years as one long political nightmare. Baldwin has frequently mused about running for public office, and in an interview published in this month’s Playboy, he reiterated his desire to do so. He also revealed his dream opponent. “I’d love to run against Joe Lieberman,” he said. “I have no use for him.” More realistically, Baldwin suggested he would want to run for some elected office in New York—perhaps governor, or mayor of New York City, or as a member of Congress from his native Long Island.

Baldwin 'desires' career as politician

9 July 2009 10:10 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news

Alec Baldwin has revealed that he would love to quit acting to become a politician. The 51-year-old actor, who plays Jack Donaghy in 30 Rock, said that he has had the "desire" to run for office for some time. Writing on his blog, the comedian said that the relationship between voters and politicians was "a sacred trust" and that before running, he would give the career move "a lot of serious thought". Baldwin is yet to decide which (more)

Alec Baldwin to Jack Cafferty: 'How Dare You Insult My Nyu Drama Degree, Bike-Murderer?!'

9 July 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | From Movieline | See recent Movieline news

Alec Baldwin has pledged to retire from acting at the "the 30 Rock wrap party," he recently told Playboy, in the very same interview where he dangled prospects of running against party turncoat and general Jewish Disappointment™ Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut Senate race. And that would be perfectly lovely: We'd like nothing more than to turn on CNN and see Baldwin in a Griswold diner surrounded by locals proudly wearing "I ♥ A Smart Alec" buttons, to whom he imparts nuggets of folksy, Donaghy-esque wisdom, like, "America, I would like to teach you something. I would like to be Michelle Pfeiffer to your angry black kid who learns that poetry is just another way to rap."

Tom Clancy’s Next Movie: Rainbow Ghost Cell?

8 July 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

That headline is a total inside joke. If you haven’t played the Clancy video games, it probably doesn’t make much sense. “Rainbow Six,” “Ghost Recon” and “Splinter Cell” are all tremendously popular game franchises. They are also, as I argued earlier this week, a good reason why we can expect to see more Clancy on film in the near future.

The earlier post grew out of an Anne Thompson piece on Variety concerning the possibility of George Clooney stepping into Clancy’s Jack Ryan character, a role previously occupied by Alec Baldwin (”The Hunt for Red October”), Harrison Ford (”Patriot Games,” “Clear & Present Danger”) and Ben Affleck (”The Sum of All Fears”), respectively. Now Thompson is reporting that Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are waiting on a script for something called “Untitled Tom Clancy Project,” a title which I imagine will change at some point.

George Clooney Wants to Be the New Jack Ryan

8 July 2009 11:37 AM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

What the heck is going on with Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan movie franchise? Paramount has been trying to get a new movie off the ground for a few years now, with Sam Raimi in talks [1] at one point to produce and possibly direct the next installment, but he ended up ditching it in favour of Spider-Man 4. There have also been a number of names being thrown around as the next person to take on the role of Jack Ryan. Ryan Gosling and James Franco were two of the big ones rumoured to follow in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, but still, nothing solid has emerged. This week, Kim Masters at The Daily Beast [2] has an interesting report on the production deal [3] that was recently struck between George Clooney and Sony Pictures. She reveals that Clooney has apparently expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan, should

George Clooney Wants to Play Jack Ryan

7 July 2009 2:19 PM, PDT | From Fandango | See recent Fandango news

Some of you might be wondering who Jack Ryan is, exactly, and why George Clooney wants to play him. Valid questions, since Mr. Ryan has been out of the cinematic loop for awhile now, but for those who don't know (or don't remember), Jack Ryan is the name of the main character in all those films (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, The Sum of All Fears) that were based on Tom Clancy's famous series of novels. We've known for awhile that Paramount wanted to revive the film franchise with a new actor in the lead role. Previously, Jack Ryan had been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck – and while rumor had it that the studio wanted to go younger with the role and sort of reboot the entire thing (with either Ryan Gosling...

George Clooney May Pursue Role as Jack Ryan

7 July 2009 7:39 AM, PDT | From Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news

Late yesterday, several sources – including Variety, MTV Movies, Cinema Blend, and Empire – started circulating rumors about one of George Clooney's next possible projects. Apparently, Clooney may be interested in succeeding Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck as CIA Agent Jack Ryan, the main character in author Tom Clancy's so-called "Ryanverse."

All the hubbub seems pointed at one sentence written by Kim Masters in this article for The Daily Beast. A source says [Clooney] expressed interest in playing Jack Ryan when and if Paramount attempts to revive the Tom Clancy series.

The Clancy adaptations began in 1990 with The Hunt for Red October, which starred Baldwin as Ryan. Ford was the next to take on the role in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Affleck was the latest to take over Ryan's role in The Sum of All Fears, but that was released seven years ago.

Will Clooney Be The New Jack Ryan?

6 July 2009 11:59 PM, PDT | From EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news

Even though The Sum Of All Fears was a critical and commercial success back in 2002, Tom Clancy’s iconic hero, Jack Ryan, hasn’t been seen on the big screen since. Paramount has been trying to relaunch the character ever since, with all stories indicating that they were going for a Batman/Bond-style reboot with a younger actor taking on the role of the noble CIA analyst. But, according to a throwaway sentence in an article by Kim Masters at The Daily Beast, the perfect Jack Ryan may have presented himself to them – and he’s at the other end of the age scale.George Clooney is said to have declared an interest in taking on the role previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, and it’s a fit so perfect we can’t imagine why Paramount hasn’t snapped his hand off and started work

George Clooney Eyeing to Be Jack Ryan

6 July 2009 11:38 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

George Clooney eyes to star as Tom Clancy's notable character, Jack Ryan. Rumors emerged after a source informed The Daily Beast that the 48-year-old actor has expressed his interest to portray the character, last portrayed by Ben Affleck in 2002, when and if Paramount attempts to revive the Tom Clancy series.

Despite the source's claim, it will be premature to state that Clooney will portray Ryan, especially because several actors, such as Ryan Gosling and James Franco, have also been linked to the possible revival of the character since 2008. If Clooney were indeed to be the new Jack Ryan, he will add his name to the list of actors having portrayed the heroic character, they are Alec Baldwin in "Red October", Harrison Ford in "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger", as well as Ben Affleck in "The Sum of All Fears".

Since Affleck's portrayal of Ryan in 2002, Paramount

Clooney to Take Over as Jack Ryan?

6 July 2009 11:02 PM, PDT | From newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news

A-list actor George Clooney recently moved his production company, Smokehouse Pictures, from Warner Bros to Sony.  In a story covering the decision and the fallout from Sony’s cancellation of Moneyball, Kim Masters at the Daily Beast mentions Clooney “expressed interest” in playing Jack Ryan in Paramount’s attempted rival of the famous Tom Clancy character.

Paramount Pictures owns the rights to the literary and screen hero and has been considering starting up new adventures for Jack Ryan without the help of his creator, Clancy.  It was rumored in January 2008 that Ryan Gosling would take over in an original story not based on one of the best-selling author’s novels, but nothing came of it.  Sam Raimi was briefly attached to direct, but the Ryan resurrection was delayed further when the director picked Spider-Man 4 and 5 instead.

Harrison Ford is best known for the role (Clear and Present Danger and

Could George Clooney Be the Next Jack Ryan?

6 July 2009 9:10 PM, PDT | From CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news

George Clooney and his Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov have recently jumped from Warner Bros to Sony Pictures. And according to The Daily Beast, Clooney is interested in helping Paramount revive the Jack Ryan character, first played by Alec Baldwin in The Hunt For Red October, then by Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger (we haven't forgotten about Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears—just didn't think it was particularly memorable).

Interestingly, back in October Harrison Ford revealed that after playing Jack Ryan in two films he would love to make a third one. But in December, screenwriter Hossein Amini was hired to write a new installment and those plans were scuttled as the story direction moved towards a prequel.

A prequel would push Ford out of the running, but Clooney is now 48 years old, and Ben Affleck was only 30 when he played Ryan

George Clooney Interested In Following Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck As Jack Ryan?

6 July 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

Listen up Tom Clancy fans. There are some Jack Ryan rumblings afoot and, since the fictional government worker has been kept on the benches since Ben Affleck revived him in 2002’s “The Sum of All Fears,” any news is good news. Variety blogger Anne Thompson spotted an offhand reference in a feature story on The Daily Beast to the character and George Clooney’s possible interest in portraying him.

It’s all very hazy and unconfirmed, but it’s also something that’s within the realm of possibility. Unlike the absurd rumor that Johnny Depp is being considered for the role of Michael Jackson in an unannounced biopic. Clooney, ever the smooth talker and stylish gent, couldn’t be a better fit for a Jack Ryan revival on the silver screen.

The Daily Beast feature references the Clooney-as-Ryan possibility in — at best — an offhand way. In his search for a

Zoe Kazan Talks The Exploding Girl

6 July 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | From TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news

It was nice to see the elusive Zoe Kazan at the Q and A following The Exploding Girl's Brooklyn premiere at BAMcinemaFest in late June. The film was a hit at its North American premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, garnering a Best Actress award for Kazan, but unfortunately, due to her duties shooting the Untitled Nancy Meyers Project, where Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin fight over Meryl Streep, Kazan didn't get to accept her award in person. That said, there was no talk of awards following this Brooklyn screening. Rather, it's Kazan (who is also making inroads as a playwright) and director Bradley Rust Gray (looking schoolboyish in a black button-down shirt and tie) revealed some insights into the making of this delicate, quiet, and moving film. (We loved this film at Tribeca, and are happy to report that it holds up to multiple screenings.) A

Inside track: Emmy race for lead actor in a comedy

4 July 2009 6:58 PM, PDT | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

Last year's champ, Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), will probably face off again opposite perennial nominees Steve Carell ("The Office") and Charlie Sheen ("Two and a Half Men"), who've never won, and three-time champ Tony Shalhoub ("Monk"). That means there will be room for two more nominees. If an Emmy god exists, one of the picks will be Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory"). The other? Maybe David Duchovny ("Californication"), who was robbed of a bid last year. Lee Pace got nominated in 2008 but probably won't be back considering that the canceled "Pushing Daisies" has wilted.

Movie star Alec Baldwin has been given the opportunity to launch his political career in Ohio by a local law firm keen to back a bid to make him the state's next Governor.

The Cooler star has often spoken about his political aspirations and now he has gone public with his plans to retire from acting in 2012, a group of leading Ohio businessmen want him to consider running for office there.

He tells Playboy magazine, "A law firm in a liberal Democratic bastion in Ohio state politics sent me a binder with a cover letter that read: "Mr. Baldwin, here's who we represent, the kinds of cases we handle, our credentials in Ohio state politics. We want you to move to Ohio and run for Governor. We will launch your career.'"

And Baldwin admits he has been tempted by the offer to join the ranks of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jesse Ventura and become a celebrity Governor - or simply run for political office elsewhere.

He adds, "The desire is there."

28 June 2009 7:58 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

This week:

The box office is Transfomed; Ryan Reynold’s career is Buried; Lorenzo di Bonaventura knows Jack Ryan; Zac Efron grows up and Daniel Craig moves into his Dream House.

Box Office

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen blasted into the top spot with a powerful $201 million in its first five days. The Michael Bay sequel overcame horrendous reviews to show that all an audience wants is giant robots and Megan Fox. You can bet your butt that Transformers 3 will be on its way soon!

With a second weekend take of $18 million it looks like The Proposal is the bridesmaid. The Sandra Bullock comedy has now banked $69 million. A final take of $100 million is pretty much a cert.

The Hangover brought in $17 million bringing giving the hit comedy a mighty total gross of $183 million. Look for the film to cross the magic $200 million mark in a week or so.
