Paul Haggis Crashes relationship to Scientology cult

26 October 2009 6:49 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

.Crash. Oscar-winning writer-director and Ep of the eponymous Starz television series Paul Haggis has left the Cult of Scientology. Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411 reported Sunday that Haggis penned a poison letter aimed at Anne Archer's son Tommy Davis, the Scientology celebrity liaison of the "church." The tipping point for Haggis, a 35 year member of the cult, was Scientology.s backing of Proposition 8 in California banning gay marriage. The letter Haggis wrote also reveals a painful family struggle where his wife, actress Deborah Rennard, came into Scientology through her parents, and was ordered by the cult to break off from her parents and have nothing more to do with them because of a perceived infraction. The 'Fatal Attraction' Ending: Fatally Flawed or Ambigiously Brilliant?

17 August 2009 4:42 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

So, after my Sunday posting of What I Watched a conversation got started on Twitter with Drew McWeeny from HitFix.com. The discussion was in regards to the ending of Fatal Attraction based on another back-and-forth I was having with Garth Franklin who runs DarkHorizons.com about my comments on Dead Calm in which I detested the tacked on ending. Garth agreed - although thought I over-reacted - saying, "Surprising take on Dead Calm, I adore that film and see your point but think you Way over-reacted to it. It's a silly addition (a la Fatal Attraction)." I agreed (not that I over-reacted), it does resemble the change at the end of Fatal Attraction (both of which came as a result of test audience screenings), but said I enjoyed the latter's ending much more and don't think it ruined Fatal Attraction at all, which was my primary beef with Dead Calm »

Michael Muhney of "The Young and the Restless" on Playing Heteroflexible, Machiavellian and More!

8 July 2009 10:09 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It's not often one hears the world of daytime soap operas compared to the writing of Shakespeare, but that's exactly what Michael Muhney thought when Maria Bell, showrunner for The Young and the Restless, described what Muhney's character would get up to should Muhney decide to join the show.

The Veronica Mars alum did decide to take the part and in doing so, landed square in the middle of what has become an explosion of queer characters on daytime television. In addition to the ground-breaking Luke and Noah on As the World Turns, there is the blossoming relationship between Kyle and Fish on One Life to Live, the return of Phillip Chancellor to The Young and the Restless where gay attorney Rafe Torres had already taken up residence, and numerous other secondary gay characters scattered across the daytime landscape.

But Muhney's Y&R character, Adam Wilson, might be involved in »

Fatal Attraction - Blu-ray Review

15 June 2009 6:17 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

The horror film for guys thinking about having an affair might be the proper subtitle for this one. However, the 1987 thriller would go on to be a box office smash as well as pick up six Academy Award nods and give new meaning to the term rabbit stew. Daniel (Michael Douglas) and Beth (Anne Archer) Gallagher seem to have the perfect marriage. However, when Beth and their daughter Ellen (Ellen Hamilton Latzen) go out of town for the weekend, Daniel meets Alex Forrest (Glenn Close). The two seem to hit it off immediately as they soon humping in the kitchen. Daniel thinks of their encounter as a simple fling, but Alex has other plans as she starts »

But the actress decided to participate in a new campaign aimed at helping kids lead healthier lives. People.com has a first look at Preston's PSA in support of an enhanced Child Nutrition Act, which would mandate healthier food in federally funded school lunch programs. [DVD Review] Fatal Attraction

11 June 2009 5:45 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Between this film and Basic Instinct, you’d be tempted to assume Michael Douglas was making his bread playing alternatively put-upon or predatory every-men involved in high-stakes lust games with gorgeous women. In the case of Fatal Attraction however, the woman in question is Glenn Close, who few people would expect when considering a bombastically unhinged romantic interest. Where Paul Verhoeven infused his work with cautionary sexual energy, here director Adrian Lyne deals with the ennui of an ordinary married life and the tense body-wrecking pull of an affair. Lyne’s work has always dealt with questions of the mind and the body (he made the steamy Nine 1/2 Weeks and the generally underrated Jacob’s Ladder before and after this film, respectively, following up with Indecent Proposal), and he approaches thriller elements from a subdued standpoint, leading up to a shocking climax on a scene-by-scene basis. Fatal Attraction is likely his most famous film, »

Privileged: CW Series Cancelled, No Season Two for Joanna Garcia and Company

19 May 2009 10:29 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Though it was looking like the underperforming CW series had a chance at survival, the network has decided to pull the plug on Privileged.

Privileged follows the story of Megan Smith (Joanna Garcia), a perky young journalist who becomes a live-in tutor for two wealthy teenage girls (Lucy Hale and Ashley Newbrough). Others in the cast include Michael Cassidy, Allan Louis, Brian Hallisay, Kristina Apgar, and Anne Archer.

Despite positive reviews and buzz, Privileged debuted on September 9, 2008 to just 2.64 million viewers and a 1.2/3 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. Those numbers weren't great for the junior network and ratings for subsequent episodes fell significantly over the rest of the season.

The network made multiple attempts to boost the show’s audience -- giving it more exposure by rerunning episodes in various timeslot -- but most viewers just didn’t seem to be particularly interested.

Though the ratings certainly hadn't mandated »

Movie Reviews: Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past

1 May 2009 2:37 AM, PDT | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, starring Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner, is being touted as an alternative to the latest X-Men movie. Maybe so, but the critics are not any more pleased with the romantic comedy than they are with the superhero one. Roger Ebert's take on it in the Chicago Sun-Times: "The potential is here for a comedy that could have been hilarious. But the screenplay spaces out some undeniably funny lines in too much plot business, and Matthew McConaughey, while admirably villainous as a lecher, is not convincing as a charmer." Claudia Puig in USA Today (who rather liked the X-Men flick), writes, "The formulaic story evaporates faster than cotton candy, and it's often as cloyingly sweet and tacky." Manohla Dargis in the New York Times calls it, "a junky-looking romantic comedy that's neither remotely romantic nor passably comic." But Peter Howell in the Toronto Star comes to the defense of the movie against his colleagues. "Take this stuff too seriously -- as a few cranky critics evidently are -- and you could work yourself up into a lather over the sexist implications of a good man turned bad by the wiles of women. But why do that?" he asks. "You've got to love a movie that so eagerly assassinates its leading man's cuddly image, and which also manages to blow a wicked kiss to Fatal Attraction," whose stars, Michael Douglas and Anne Archer have roles in this movie. »

Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Ghosts of Girlfriends Past’ Overdone, But Relatable

30 April 2009 11:01 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” is the cinematic blending of two familiar formulas: the “love, lose and then love again” framework of most romantic comedies with the idea of transforming ghosts from the classic “A Christmas Carol”. The result: an overdone yet relatable story of a man coming to terms with his true desires.

Celebrity photographer Connor Mead (Matthew McConaughey) makes a high-profile living shooting the scantily clad. Connor’s true fame, however, seems to come from the serial seduction of his subjects: double-booked dates and time-saving breakups via conference call are a way of life for this master manipulator.

Rating: 3.0/5.0 His reputation preceding him, Connor is only a half-expected guest at his kid brother’s wedding. Upon arrival, he makes no effort to hide his disdain for long-term commitment while attempting to convince his brother, Paul (Breckin Meyer), to cancel the nuptials. The presence of Connor’s childhood sweetheart and scorned love, »
