Stars in peril

15 hours ago | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

As low budget movies rake in the cash this year, star vehicles are tanking. 2009 has been a year rich in unexpected successes and flops, leading Hollywood studios to consider dropping big name stars for future projects, or at least drastically reducing their clout. While small productions like "The Hangover", "District 9" and "Paranormal Activity" have been immensely successful in the past months, several big budget star vehicles have tanked at the box office. Among the "victims": "A Christmas Carol" starring Jim Carrey, "Surrogates" starring Bruce Willis, "Funny People" starring Adam Sandler, "Imagine That" starring Eddie Murphy and "Duplicity" starring Julia Roberts all did much worse than expected. The upcoming "Twilight" sequel "New Moon" will not likely change the trend, either. The saga, made relatively cheaply and starring young talent whose stardom comes from the first episode, is expected to beat all the other competing movies, confirming the question: are stars still really necessary? »

It seems every time I turn around, someone new gets added to the upcoming comic book adaptation Red. Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, and Mary-Louise Parker were previously cast in the Bruce Willis vehicle, to be directed by Robert Schwentke.

They will further be joined by Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Dreyfuss and Brian Cox, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog. As for Dreyfuss and Cox, they will play a wealthy man who made a fortune on government contracts, and a Cold War spy who has a rivalry with the main protagonist, respectively.

McMahon played Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movies, which were also based on comic books. »

Top 7 Movies That Make The End of the World Sound Hilarious

13 November 2009 2:18 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Somehow, the end of the world has become a form of entertainment. Instead of being scared out of our wits of apocalyptic thoughts, we enjoy plunking down $10 to watch them become realized by big budget blockbusters. Hollywood serves it up, however: whole cities are destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people die, the fate of mankind is brought into question, and sometimes, Randy Quaid becomes our savior.

Which brings us to a certain theme that has been continued through a legacy of doomsday movies – they’re funny as hell. More unintentional than not, these movies are loaded with goofy movie milestones that make the blockbusters seem like gargantuan scaled jokes, with their characters, dialogue, and special moments serving as a type of punch line. Many disaster movies seem to be plagued by an air of idiocy that moves from one big budget movie to the next, »

Will 'Red' be So Good Not Even Summit Can Mess It Up?

13 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Let's be honest, without Twilight we probably wouldn't even be talking about Summit Entertainment any longer. They have, of course, been around much longer than most of us realize with films such as Memento, American Pie, Mr. and#038; Mrs. Smith, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as part of their production company cred. However, as distributors they have Twilight and the modest hit in Knowing (which they handled domestically and not internationally). Beyond that what are we really talking about?

They managed to squander what I understand to be a rather entertaining teen comedy in Sex Drive, Push bombed, Astro Boy is still in theaters but you wouldn't know it, Sorority Row (a teen horror with the promise of nudity) earned $11 million and the sin of all sins, Summit's 17%-Rotten Tomatoes rated Fly Me To The Moon made more money at the box-office »

Wanna make your comic miniseries-turned-feature film into a big-buzz event? Jam it full of interesting actors. It all started with Bruce Willis. Then Morgan Freeman entered the project, followed by Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, and Mary-Louise Parker. So where do we go from here? The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog reports that Julian McMahon, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Dreyfus, and Brian Cox are all in negotiations to board the project.

As we know, Bruce Willis will play a retired black ops dude who faces off against "younger, more high-tech assassins who show up to kill him." Turns out Mr. McMahon will be the center of this conspiracy, playing the "Vice President with a dark side." Meanwhile, Borgnine will take on "the keeper of the CIA's darkest records," Dreyfus will play a wealthy dude making a mint on government contracts, and Cox will be a baddie once again, playing "a former »

'Red' Adds McMahon, Borgnine to Cast

The adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s Red miniseries has moved ahead and added Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck, Fantastic Four), Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Cox, and the great Ernest Borgnine, who will play the keeper of the CIA’s darkest secrets.  The film, scheduled for November 19, 2010 release, already stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John C. Reilly and Mary Louise Parker.

Summit Entertainment, flush with Twilight cash, is producing this film based on the 2003 WildStorm miniseries about a former black-ops CIA agent whose a quiet, retired life is shattered when a high-tech assassin shows up at his home. Willis is the spy with McMahon portraying the Vice President who heads up a shadow conspiracy. The 92-year-old Borgnine will play the man who knows the dirty secrets and Dreyfuss is a wealthy industrialist who benefitted from Government contracts. Cox is a former Cold War-era spy with an axe to grind against Willis. »

‘Red’ Adds More Award-Winning Actors To Cast

13 November 2009 9:46 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We haven’t been keeping enough tabs on the adaptation of Red, based on the comic book mini-series created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner and published by DC/Wildstorm between 2003-2004. The film adaptation first popped onto our radar when action man Bruce Willis signed-on to star, followed soon after by the news that acclaimed actor Morgan Freeman would be joining Willis . Completing the trifecta of acting heavyweights, last week we heard that Helen Mirren was onboard for Red; that’s three Golden Globe and/or Oscar-winners coming together for an obscure comic book flick! Crazy, right?

Well it gets even crazier, as we now have more famous names to add to the cast list of Red… Last week news broke that Mary Louise Parker (Weeds) and John C. Reily were in talks for the film, and today we learn  (thanks to Collider) that they will be joined by »

Four More for Bruce Willis’ Red

13 November 2009 8:08 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Based on the Warren Ellis comic book mini-series, “Red” stars Bruce Willis is an ex-cia agent who has retired to green pastures, when young high-tech assassins come after him. It’s a nifty idea for a movie, and one that Willis should be able to play in his sleep. It is, after all, just another variation on Willis’ most famous character, tough New York cop John Mclane. Besides Willis, the cast also includes Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, and Mary Louise Parker as his love interest. Now you can add four more names to that list. Joining “Red’s” ballooning cast will be “Nip/Tuck’s” Julian McMahon, playing the movie’s Vice President of the United States, a character that is said to be at the center of the conspiracy that Willis’ retired CIA agent must expose. I haven’t read the comics, but I’m assuming »

Exactly how many people are they going to fit in the cast of Red, The DC Comics adaptation has been adding cast members right and left ever since Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman signed on in the lead roles, and now they're reaching way back into Hollywood's history to add what we can only hope will be the last batch of cast members. You thought Helen Mirren was old? Try Ernest Borgnine! Yes Borgnine, along with Richard Dreyfuss, Brian Cox and Julian McMahon, has jointed the lineup for the film that begins shooting next year. According to THR it's 92-year-old Borgnine's first feature in ages, while Dreyfuss is probably grateful to still be getting work after signing on to something called Piranha 3-D. 15 Hilarious Japanese Commercials Starring Hollywood Actors

13 November 2009 6:32 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The announcement that Quentin Tarantino recently starred in a Japanese Softbank commercial has been making headlines [1] around the web this week, and I am still not quite sure why people are making such a big deal out of it. It's no surprise that Qt is somewhat well-versed in Japanese culture and no surprise that he enjoys hamming it up for the camera either. More to the point, I don't think these goofy commercials are quite as detrimental to a celebrity's reputation as it once was believed. After YouTube and websites like Japander [2] spread them across the internet for the whole world to see, and Bill Murray poked fun at the practice in Lost in Translation, it's easy to see why the Hollywood elite shied away for a while. However, lately Japanese commercials seem to be back in vogue, and we are even starting to see domestic ads becoming more acceptable as well. »
