Jeremy Piven Goes Knee-Deep in ‘Waska’

30 November 2009 6:14 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Jeremy Piven was the best thing since sliced bread about 4 or 5 years ago after the birth of Entourage, but with the reported decline in that show’s quality (this is hearsay — I’ve never seen an episode of it) and less exposure for the actor beyond a great role in Smokin’ Aces, I keep seeing more and more backlash against the guy.

I don’t really understand why this is — he’s charismatic as all get-out, just sullied by roles in The Goods and surely the upcoming adaptation of Marmaduke. One thing that could very well help is a lower budget, character-driven picture, which is precisely what he’s signing up for with Waska.

Directed by Gaby Dellal (On a Clear Day), Waska is an indie drama in the works that will focus on “a young father who loses his son, throwing the community into disarray at the time of »

Jeremy Piven Celebrates Waska

29 November 2009 10:47 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

News of a new Jeremy Piven sighting is always cause for celebration, so with a spring in our step on this chilly late November morning we bring you Waska: an indie drama on the way from On a Clear Day director Gaby Dellal. The Waska of the title is the first snowfall of the year, "magical but often treacherous", and the story revolves around the disappearance of a toddler in the snowstorm, and a small community's search for him. The novel by Leslie Schwartz on which the film is based (adapted by Catherine Trieschmann, with the title changed from the eighties-soap-opera-sounding Angel's Crest) is as much about detailed portraits of the townsfolk as it is about the disappearance, so expect toothsome supporting roles for a cast that also includes Mira Sorvino, Thomas Dekker, Lynn Collins, Elizabeth McGovern, Joseph Morgan and Kate Walsh. Immediate wintry comparisons that leap to mind are »

Thomas Dekker to Lead Indie Drama Waska Co-Starring Jeremy Piven, Lynn Collins, and Kate Walsh

29 November 2009 9:46 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In what’s sure to be an uplifting tale on par with E.T. and commercials for the Olympics, Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Jeremy Piven, Lynn Collins, and Kate Walsh have all been cast in Waska, which is about a young father (Dekker) whose 3-year-old freezes to death on a fishing trip.  I believe we’ve found our feel-good film of 2010.

According to THR, “a local prosecutor (Piven) goes after him, townspeople like his ex-wife (Collins) rage at him and others support him as he attempts to makes sense of what happened.”  Mira Sorvino, Elizabeth McGovern, and Joseph Morgan also co-star in the film. Waska is based off a novel by Leslie Schwartz and is probably a great beach read.

Indie Mulitple Sarcasms Get For Spring Release

25 November 2009 2:08 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Multiple Sarcasms is a movie title that sounds clever when you first hear it-- it's a play on multiple orgasms, right?-- but then falls apart as soon as you think harder about it. I mean, what? Sarcasm is a distinct single property? Hopefully my confusion about the title doesn't turn out to be the most interesting thing about this indie movie, which has just been set for theatrical release in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle next March. According to Variety the plan is to bring the movie, starring Timothy Hutton, Mira Sorvino, Dana Delany, Mario van Peebles and Stockard Channing, into more markets in April and May. In the film Hutton plays a New Yorker who takes an "unconventional path" to changing his life: writing a play. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't "Let's put on a show!" the oldest cinematic trick in history for »

Gems of the 1980's: Susan Seidelman Remembers Desperately Seeking Susan

22 November 2009 8:01 PM, PST | The Hollywood Interview | See recent The Hollywood Interview news »

(Filmmaker Susan Seidelman, above.)

by Jon Zelazny

In the early 80’s NYC cultural lull between Patti Smith’s retirement and Jay McInerney’s breakout, Nyu film school graduate Susan Seidelman did the scrappy shoestring indie film thing, resulting in her acclaimed feature debut Smithereens (1982).

Best known for her hit sophomore effort, Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Seidelman continues to direct movies and TV shows featuring female protagonists… including the pilot for “Sex and the City” and her Oscar nominated short film The Dutch Master (1994), about a shy dental technician who ventures “into” a museum painting for flights of erotic fantasy.

Susan Seidelman: My husband Jonathan Brett—who co-wrote and produced The Dutch Master—and I had committed to living in Paris for a year because I was set to direct a feature for Polygram, a company that unfortunately went bankrupt. So we were kind of in a funk over there, and »

Bravo's 'Million Dollar Listing' -- Guilty pleasure alert!

3 November 2009 12:37 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Let me start by saying that I don't really believe in the whole idea of "guilty pleasures". If you like Hall & Oates, there's no shame in that. If it's re-runs of 21 Jump Street that float your boat, more power to you. Addicted to Val Kilmer-Mira Sorvino vision-impaired romantic comedies? I say, live and let live. That said, lately, I've become totally hooked on a show that I know in my bones is dreadful and indefensible,  but I can't stop watching. I'm talking about Bravo's Million Dollar Listing -- the greedy, status-obsessed, brain-dead stepchild to the network's classier Flipping »

Oscar voters get three more DVDs: 'Coco Before Chanel,' 'Damned United,' 'Whatever Works'

30 October 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

On Thursday, Oscar voters received the second, third and fourth DVD screeners sent to the full academy — all three from Sony Pictures Classics, which thus becomes the first major studio out of the gate: "Coco Before Chanel," "The Damned United" and "Whatever Works." Other Spc screeners ("An Education," "The Last Station," "Broken Embraces," "White Ribbon") will be sent later in derby season, a studio rep promises. "A Prophet" is eligible only in the race for best foreign-language film, which requires theatrical screenings, so DVDs of that will not be shipped. The only previous DVD sent to all academy members was "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Some bloggers reported that "The Messenger" was also sent, but that's not true. At least not yet. It was sent to journalists, but a copy won't be shipped to academy members for another week or so. Economic hard times may severely limit the number of »

Whatever Works Blu-ray Review

26 October 2009 4:19 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

There are two things it’s hard to get away from when discussing Woody Allen: the first is that his output is so constant, there’s going to be winners mixed with losers. Over the last couple years, Allen’s talent has been scattershot to say the least, but then he might surprise you with a film like Match Point, or Vicki Christina Barcelona. Even his early funny period had some misfires, but that leads into the second point, which is that Allen has not been strong for a long time. You can never count him out, but the 21st century is easily his weakest period of cinema. Whatever Works, however, was written a very long time ago, and it shows, so it combines early funny with later Woody. My review after the jump.

Top Ten Underrated Films (Of All Time)

2 September 2009 11:15 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Great movies sometimes do not hit it off with the audience upon first viewing. Not even the sublime Citizen Kane found much appreciation on its release in 1941, taking over twenty years and critical re-discovery in order for everybody to agree it was a pretty special movie.

Cult films are different (and this is not a list of cult movies) – those do tend to find an audience (usually people who become hardcore fans) allowing the film to become celebrated in alternative ways – as opposed to garnering a multitude of awards.

This is a list drawn up of films I consider under-rated; overlooked; not thought about; dismissed, and so forth. I am not suggesting they should be regaled as masterpieces anointed and placed in a cinematic pantheon of greatness.

Compiling lists is very tough and as this is limited to a mere ten films, some wonderful films did not make final cut. »
