Let me start by saying that I don't really believe in the whole idea of "guilty pleasures". If you like Hall & Oates, there's no shame in that. If it's re-runs of 21 Jump Street that float your boat, more power to you. Addicted to Val Kilmer-Mira Sorvino vision-impaired romantic comedies? I say, live and let live. That said, lately, I've become totally hooked on a show that I know in my bones is dreadful and indefensible, but I can't stop watching. I'm talking about Bravo's Million Dollar Listing -- the greedy, status-obsessed, brain-dead stepchild to the network's classier Flipping »

On Thursday, Oscar voters received the second, third and fourth DVD screeners sent to the full academy — all three from Sony Pictures Classics, which thus becomes the first major studio out of the gate: "Coco Before Chanel," "The Damned United" and "Whatever Works." Other Spc screeners ("An Education," "The Last Station," "Broken Embraces," "White Ribbon") will be sent later in derby season, a studio rep promises. "A Prophet" is eligible only in the race for best foreign-language film, which requires theatrical screenings, so DVDs of that will not be shipped. The only previous DVD sent to all academy members was "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Some bloggers reported that "The Messenger" was also sent, but that's not true. At least not yet. It was sent to journalists, but a copy won't be shipped to academy members for another week or so. Economic hard times may severely limit the number of »

There are two things it’s hard to get away from when discussing Woody Allen: the first is that his output is so constant, there’s going to be winners mixed with losers. Over the last couple years, Allen’s talent has been scattershot to say the least, but then he might surprise you with a film like Match Point, or Vicki Christina Barcelona. Even his early funny period had some misfires, but that leads into the second point, which is that Allen has not been strong for a long time. You can never count him out, but the 21st century is easily his weakest period of cinema. Whatever Works, however, was written a very long time ago, and it shows, so it combines early funny with later Woody. My review after the jump.

Great movies sometimes do not hit it off with the audience upon first viewing. Not even the sublime Citizen Kane found much appreciation on its release in 1941, taking over twenty years and critical re-discovery in order for everybody to agree it was a pretty special movie.
Cult films are different (and this is not a list of cult movies) – those do tend to find an audience (usually people who become hardcore fans) allowing the film to become celebrated in alternative ways – as opposed to garnering a multitude of awards.
This is a list drawn up of films I consider under-rated; overlooked; not thought about; dismissed, and so forth. I am not suggesting they should be regaled as masterpieces anointed and placed in a cinematic pantheon of greatness.
Compiling lists is very tough and as this is limited to a mere ten films, some wonderful films did not make final cut. »

Word from Variety is that Sly Stallone is strapping on his Olivia Newton-John headband and prepping for more Rambo carnage. The film will officially mark the fifth First Blood chapter. The story, from reports, will apparently center around a young girl kidnapped near the Us-Mexico border. Because if you want human traffickers punished, you don't send Mira Sorvino and Donald Sutherland, you send muthafuckin' John G. Rambo! Check out Variety for the rest of the deets. I absolutely love the Rambo series. First Blood is one of those movies I revisit about once a month. There is something so entirely satisfying about seeing Sly solve entire socio-political quagmires and shape the landscape of war all by himself. And First Blood is an interesting take on veteran affairs (as in don't fuck with them!). Rambo is the hero we all wanted to be as kids; badass mercenary who could live off the land and kill with his bare »

He said: "I will retire at 60. It is a good age to stop making movies. I could start writing novels and film criticism and become a man of letters. And then I could finally have a family. Many expectant parents already have a nickname in mind when naming their unborn child, but for a growing minority the nickname is the name! Linda Rosenkrantz, co-founder of nameberry.com, points out that celebrities like Tiger Woods, Helena Bonham Carter and Mira Sorvino bypassed the full, formal names of Charles, William and Jonathan when naming their sons Charlie, Billy and Johnny, respectively.
What’s more, Tiger and Denise Richards — both of whom have daughters named Sam — are also using the same nicknames for both boys and girls interchangeably. The using a unisex nickname-as-a-name club may include Ethan Suplee and John C. McGinley (with daughters named Billie), Rebecca Romijn & Jerry O’Connell (with daughter Charlie) and Melissa Etheridge (with daughter Johnnie), “but these are miles away from the unisex nickname names of the 60s and 70s like Corey and Jody,” Linda notes. “Today’s versions are mostly short forms of standard appellations, »

I've been offline quite a lot this past week so perhaps this is old news but last night I read a rumor that Scarlett Johansson might be offered the part of Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn. That's a future film based on a posthumously published diary by Colin Clark. He was under Sir Laurence Olivier's employ during the shoot of The Prince and the Showgirl when Marilyn was 30 and Olivier 50.
I love showbiz movies but I often wish that telefilms & movies would leave Marilyn alone. Better that Hollywood promoted Marilyn's actual work (still undervalued) than continually reanimating the corpse of her celebrity.
As for the possible Marilyns, Scarlett still hasn't really proven herself a viable box office commodity but she's held on to the #1 most-sought-after-young-actress title anyway. And for a surprising number of years now. That said, if we must see Marilyn revived again, I'd rather »

Remember the HBO movie Norma Jean and Marilyn, which starred Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino as two sides of Marilyn Monroe? It wasn't very good, so don't worry if you missed it.
A new film featuring Monroe at the height of her fame mays soon hit theaters, and it may star Scarlett Johansson. Worst Previews reports that she's the choice of filmmakers engineering My Week, based on the diary of Colin Clark, who in 1957, toured Monroe throughout London while his boss, Laurence Olivier, was making The Prince and the Showgirl with Monroe.
Director Simon Curtis is said to be looking at several actresses, including Kate Hudson, Amy Adams, and Michelle Williams. While Johansson might seem like the most logical choice, I'd really like to see Michelle Williams in the role. I fear I'd be overruled, however. »

Oscar winner Mira Sorvino has given birth to her third child - after a traumatic pregnancy.
The actress and husband Christopher Backus welcomed little Holden into the world last month, but she admits that carrying a baby for the third time was anything but easy.
Sorvino was diagnosed with placenta previa, meaning she had to be hospitalised for nine weeks before the baby was even born, and was ordered to remain completely bed-ridden - meaning she couldn't care for her other kids, four year old Mattea and Johnny, three.
She explains, "I developed a blood clot due to all the inactivity and had to be anti-coagulated for months to prevent a pulmonary embolism. I spent another two-and-a-half weeks at the hospital, during which time, missing the children and my husband and knowing what the separation was doing to the kids became almost unbearable."
But the star insists the pain was all worth it: "As soon as they placed him in my arms I knew it had all been worth it. He is my miracle baby. With everything that threatened this pregnancy and both of our lives, he came out of it completely unscathed: perfectly healthy, beautiful and wonderful!" »
