DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Rare Photos Of '60S Stars Go On Display

13 November 2009 11:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A series of never-before-seen photographs of '60s icons including Sir Michael Caine, John Lennon and Charlton Heston has gone on display in London.

The black-and-white shots were saved from a bonfire in the mid-1970s when celebrity photographer Brian Duffy tried to destroy his archive of work after an argument with his staff.

They have remained hidden away in cardboard boxes ever since - but now form part of an exhibition of Duffy's images at a gallery in the U.K. capital.

The pictures, which also include shots of Arnold Schwarzenegger and notorious London gangster Reggie Kray, survived the blaze when fellow photographer David Bailey intervened and convinced Duffy not to throw them on the pyre.

Duffy says, "I went out into the garden and started burning things. You would think celluloid would burn easily but it didn't... David Bailey turned up and he said he would have helped me (with the pressure of my work) if he'd known. I stopped burning stuff and the rest of the negatives just sat in shoe boxes in my house until my old lady (wife) asked me what I was going to do with them." »

15 Hilarious Japanese Commercials Starring Hollywood Actors

13 November 2009 6:32 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The announcement that Quentin Tarantino recently starred in a Japanese Softbank commercial has been making headlines [1] around the web this week, and I am still not quite sure why people are making such a big deal out of it. It's no surprise that Qt is somewhat well-versed in Japanese culture and no surprise that he enjoys hamming it up for the camera either. More to the point, I don't think these goofy commercials are quite as detrimental to a celebrity's reputation as it once was believed. After YouTube and websites like Japander [2] spread them across the internet for the whole world to see, and Bill Murray poked fun at the practice in Lost in Translation, it's easy to see why the Hollywood elite shied away for a while. However, lately Japanese commercials seem to be back in vogue, and we are even starting to see domestic ads becoming more acceptable as well. »

Jim Carrey's superb site

13 November 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

Exploring the official site of Jim Carrey is an authentic and fascinating adventure. Many stars have realized having their own official site is good PR, but not all do more than make a home page and add some superficial content. Some even manage to turn off the casual browser with websites that aren't up to date, are badly designed and whose content look more like an online CV than anything else. The sites of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christopher Lambert are especially "good" examples of this. Jim Carrey, however, is an exception: his personal site is a pure marvel where users can spend hours going on a fascinating voyage through his life and work in an atmosphere reminiscent of the movies of Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam. Click on the link to enter the magnificently odd world of Jim Carr... »

Rihanna Will Welcome A “new era” When Her New Album Comes Out

11 November 2009 4:00 AM, PST | Gossipvita | See recent Gossipvita news »

The singer is set to release ‘Rated R’ later this month and admits she has felt massively nervous about performing songs written in the aftermath of her assault at the hands of former boyfriend Chris Brown. She said: "There are a lot of butterflies, a lot of excitement. "I'm anxious. Like, I can't wait. But you're always nervous, because you're about to go do something big. It's a new thing, a new era. But I'm not scared. I'm just really excited. I just can't wait to start. “My first time performing the songs was on Sunday night in Los Angeles with Jay-z. We did 'Run This Town' and 'Hard,' and I kept thinking, 'Why the hell am I so nervous?' And I couldn't figure it out. But then I knew why: It was the first time performing one of my new songs.” Marking her new era, Rihanna looked »

Dolph Lundgren ponders role in mythical Conan reboot

10 November 2009 12:20 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Dolph Lundgren is cool. I don’t care how many direct-to-dvd movies he does a month, Lundgren is a complete bad-ass. So much of a bad-ass in fact that Lundgren might show up in the highly-rumored Conan reboot.

“I’ve talked to the producers about doing something for Conan,’” Lundgren said. “It’s too early,” he said, stating that he wouldn’t know anything certain until “probably next year.”

The updated Conan will directed by Marcus Nispel for Lionsgate. The reboot is expected to more faithful to Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian than the Arnold Schwarzenegger films were.

Lundgren will be seen in Sylvester Stallone’s action-ensemble pic, The Expendables, where the 52-year-old will play a Swedish sniper named Gunnar Jensen. The film is expected to be released on August 20th.

Conan the Barbarian was released in 1982 from director John Milius. Milius later went to direct Red Dawn. »

Sgt. Rock Movie Gets a New Director… and a New Time Period

10 November 2009 9:08 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Producer Joel Silver has been struggling to bring WWII comic book hero Sgt. Rock to the big screen for almost 20 years now, with the script undergoing a ton of rewrites and people like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis once under consideration to star. This week it looks like he has finally managed to convince Warner Brothers to back the movie, although he may be forced to make some compromises in order to get it off the ground. Heat Vision [1] reports that I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has signed on to helm the film, taking over for Guy Ritchie who was previously attached [2] (he has since moved on to direct Lobo). The latest draft of the script was written by Chad St. John, who also penned the upcoming remake of Outland. Akiva Goldsman will co-produce with Silver. Now, here's the thing that's going to worry Sgt. Rock fans: apparently they »

Is Sgt. Rock Finally Happening?

10 November 2009 12:40 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Benjamin Franklin once said, “The only things certain in life are death and taxes.” Well, if the former Us President had lived to see the present day, he doubtless would have added one more thing to the list: “…and Joel Silver trying to make Sgt. Rock.”Silver has been trying to get an adaptation of the DC Comics’ World War II-based, cigar-chewing, bullet-spewing tough guy hero off the ground for as long as Empire can remember. So long, in fact, that Arnold Schwarzenegger was tipped to play Rock for a long time, and virtually every action writer worth a damn in Hollywood has taken a crack at the script, from Brian Helgeland to Steven E. DeSouza to John Milius. And all to no avail. Most recently, Guy Ritchie, of all people, took a stab at it, attaching himself to direct, before moving onto another comic book for Silver, Lobo. But »

'Sgt. Rock' Set in Today.s Time?

9 November 2009 9:30 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Francis Lawrence, who directed I Am Legend, is attached to another action-adventure film set in the future. However, this one revolves around a World War II hero/DC Comics character, and by set in the future, we mean the present day.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are looking at the Sgt. Rock comic as the basis for a big-budget actioner along the lines of The Dirty Dozen. The recent success of Inglourious Basterds might have made the project seem more palatable, since expensive period war movies — especially those lacking the contemplative tone of a Saving Private Ryan — have not exactly been on many Hollywood studios' to-do lists.

Chad St. John, who has written a remake of the sci-fi film Outland, will be writing the modern take on Sgt. Rock, with Silver and Goldsman expected to bring it to Warner Bros. »

Dolph Lundgren in Talks for Conan

9 November 2009 6:42 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

MTV News caught up with Dolph Lundgren who said that he is talking to producers of Conan and might be making an appearance in the reboot.

"I've talked to the producers about doing something for 'Conan,'" Lundgren said, as he cautioned that casting is still going on and whether there is a role for him at all likely wouldn't be decided until 2010.

"It's too early," he said, explaining that he didn't expect to know more until "probably next year."

Directed by Marcus Nispel, the Lionsgate film is based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian. The new version is expected to be more faithful to Howard's original creation than were the Arnold Schwarzenegger films.

No production date was announced.

Exclusive: 'Conan' Might Have A Part In It For Dolph Lundgren

From Splash Page: A casting call may be out for the lead role in "Conan," since former franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger is busy governing the State of California. Whether director Marcus Nispel agrees with Brett Ratner's perspective that the film's title character should be played by "an unknown" remains to be seen, but an established action movie legend and former face of the "Punisher" could make an appearance.

"I've talked to the producers about doing something for 'Conan,'" actor Dolph Lundgren told MTV News while promoting his direct-to-dvd film "Command Performance," which he co-wrote, directed and starred in.

Arnold Schwarzenegger And Screen Legend Kirk Douglas In Today's Daily TwitPic

9 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Arnold Schwarzenegger is always going to be a movie star to me, even though the duty of governing California has kept him away from Hollywood in recent years. Here's hoping that his cameo appearance in "The Expendables" is a sign that he wants to get back to acting after he finished with politics.

He's still hooked in enough that he'll take a trip to present an award. Kirk Douglas, one of the original tough guy actors, was recently given the British Film Academy's Britannia Award, and Schwarzenegger was the one to present it to him. Douglas has been quiet in recent years, but he's also 92 years old. With classics like "Spartacus," Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" and "Gunfight at the Ok Corral" under his belt, the man has earned himself a rest, the better to observe the success of his son, Michael, and to collect lifetime achievement awards, like »

Matt Damon, from private campaigner to Hollywood's biggest star

9 November 2009 1:59 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports

Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.

Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

Kirk Douglas has told of his delight at being presented with a top film award by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The veteran star worked with the governor of California on the the 1979 movie The Villian, which was Schwarzenegger's first film. Douglas, who was named as one of the world's oldest celebrity bloggers earlier this year, wrote on his MySpace page that he had been touched by the presentation of the Britannia Award For Worldwide Contribution To Filmed Entertainment. The 92-year-old wrote: "Sometimes I think that if you live long enough you get all the awards. But last night was something special. I received the BAFTA/La award for (more) »

10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

8 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!
