DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Improv 500 Days of Summer Mute Elevator Scene

9 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Last night's Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards ceremony was as packed with meta-literal moments as it was with unabashed enthusiasm for the cinema. Onscreen talents such as Jason Bateman, Bill Paxton and Diane Kruger mounted the Highlands stage to thank their behind-the-camera colleagues, who then jumped in front of our cameras to accept their awards. But the most meta moment was claimed when Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt honored screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber by ditching their presenter script to improv how 500 Days of Summer would have looked without Neustadter and Weber's screenplay. »

Badasses of Horror: Part Two

9 November 2009 6:30 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

See the first part of this article here.

Ellen Ripley (Alien/Aliens, 1979/86)

Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley is just hanging out on the intergalactic transport ship Nostromo, leading the often-dull life of a Space Teamster, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, her idiot captain decides to land on the remote planet Lv-426 to investigate some stupid distress signal emanating from a crashed spaceship. Now, as we all know, responding to distress signals is one of the top five most insanely boneheaded tactical decisions any science-fiction/horror space traveler can possibly make, but this doesn’t stop Captain Numbnuts from ordering his crew to get their asses down there and dope out the spooky alien wreckage.

Of course, once they go down to investigate, some dumbass crewmember decides it would be totally hilarious to stick his face in one of the strange egglike things he finds in the smoldering wreckage of the derelict ship. »

Act Welcomes Former NFL Star Bo Eason in Runt Of The Litter 9/18-10/24

24 October 2009 1:30 AM, PDT | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

A father's expectations. A son's dream. A brother's rivalry.

Runt of the Litter is the acclaimed, semi-autobiographical one-man show (soon to be a major motion picture) chronicles volatile family dynamics as well as triumph despite great odds. Always considered too small to play football, former Houston Oiler Bo Eason developed-then never deviated from-a 20-year-plan to go pro. But his plan didn't include a more talented older brother whose success would forever eclipse his own.

Written and performed by Bo Eason and directed by Larry Moss, Runt of the Litter opens in the final hour of Jack Henry's lifelong dream, with only one thing that stands in his way: his brother. The play closely examines what happens to two brothers in a family of overachievers: when their parents assure their oldest son that he is the one destined for football superstardom, and they tell their youngest son he is too small to compete. »

31 Days of Horror: Near Dark

20 October 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Near Dark (1987) Synopsis: A cowboy (Adrian Pasdar) meets a pretty, young gal at the local saloon and discovers too late that her kiss includes a double-pronged love bite of vampiric proportions. Mae (Jenny Wright) and her blood-sucking vampire family (half the cast of Aliens) take Caleb for a ride in their Winnebago and try to make him one of them. But as any good cowboy would, Caleb fights his transformation and sets about rescuing the pale-skinned love of his life. The family isn't too keen on that idea of course and soon the small Texas town is awash in blood, burning flesh, and bar fights. Killer Scene: Speaking of bar fights... Caleb's introduction to the family's unique hobby occurs in a sleazy bar almost halfway into the movie. After insulting the bartender and patrons ("shit-kicker heaven"), the blood-letting begins with a waitress getting her throat slit. More deaths follow including a broken neck, shotgun »

The 'Storm Chasers' give us their Top 5 closest calls

19 October 2009 6:42 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In my mind you would have to be either totally crazy, Bill Paxton, or both in order to drive head-on towards an incoming tornado. But Reed Timmer and Chris Chittick do it all the time and, what’s more, they do it on television. As part of Team Tvn on the Discovery Channel’s Storm Chasers, these two riders on the storm put themselves in harm’s way daily, all for the sake of scientific research, adrenaline and good TV. So in honor of the premiere of their third season Sunday night, we asked them to give us their Top 5 list of scariest, »

[DVD Review] The Objective

17 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Poor Daniel Myrick. After all but setting the world on fire a decade ago with The Blair Witch Project (co-directed with Eduardo Sanchez), a film that managed to grab headlines in the summer of The Matrix, Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and The Sixth Sense, he returns now with The Objective, a film that is split by two opposing instincts: recapturing the glory of his initial success and expanding his vision to a scope that would suggest he’s ready to move on to a studio feature. Neither instinct is satisfied by either the film’s plotline or its execution, leaving us to wonder what movie he really wanted to make.

In the weeks following 9/11, the United States government picks up a strong heat signal emanating from the remote mountains of Afghanistan. The first suggestion, of course, is that the Taliban has gotten hold of a nuclear weapon, »

Fan Made: Bill Paxton Pinball Machine

7 October 2009 7:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Oh, man. There are usually two groups of items on Fan Made: geeky-embarrassing and geeky-awesome. And my friends, this one-of-a-kind Bill Paxton pinball machine falls squarely into the latter category.

Corona's Coming Attractions steered us towards this pet project of one Benjamin J. Heckendorn, a pinball machine mod that takes its cues from Paxton's whole filmography, with references ranging from True Lies and Titanic to Apollo 13 and Aliens (and I heartily agree with the Corona-made suggestion that Paxton's Hicks Hudson better be the one saying "Game over, man!" when all is said and done).

On his own blog, Heckendorn explained that he's been cracking away at this since 2005 and hopes to have the machine done in time for the 2010 Midwest Gaming Classic in Milwaukee, Wi. Check out his site for more photos and videos; we've included one of the latter after the jump.

(...man, he even made room for a Vertical Limit reference! »

Near Dark or Twilight?

7 October 2009 8:13 AM, PDT | HorrorYearbook | See recent HorrorYearbook news »

The only word I can come up with to describe the Near Dark Blu-ray art is "lol!" Check out how they tried to cash in on the Twilight craze below. Near Dark releases on Blu-ray November 10, 2009. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) Near Dark is Not a Twilight type vampire flick! Caleb (Adrian Pasdar), a young man from a small farm town, meets a drifter named Mae (Jenny Wright). When she turns him into a vampire rather than kill him, the rest of her "family" is slow to accept him. The ancient leader, Jesse (Lance Henriksen), and his psychotic henchman Severen (Bill Paxton) lay down the law; Caleb has to carry his own weight or die. »

The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Mel Gibson's Beaver Tops Corey Feldman's Snuff

Hey people, ready to see Mel Gibson's beaver? Because he has one and we've got photos. If that's not your thing, maybe you'd prefer seeing Corey Feldman shoot himself in the noggin. Or perhaps a Bill Paxton pinball machine. It's all sorts of weird this week. No? Well there's some really bad movie news, too, as usual. Avert your eyes as necessary.

The Good

H.P. Lovecraft fans, you don't want to miss the documentary Lovecraft: Fear of the Unknown that's coming on DVD and Bluray in a short couple of weeks. It's interviews some very cool people, including Neil Gaiman and Guillermo del Toro.

The world's only Bill Paxton pinball machine

29 September 2009 11:18 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

I spend a lot of time every day connected to the internet and I see many things. Very few of them come as close to being as incredibly geeky and super-cool as what Benjamin J. Heckendorn is making in his off-time: the world's only and fully working pinball machine meant to honor the film career of Bill Paxton. Twister. Aliens. True Lies. Frailty. The Dark Backward. Weird Science. The Terminator. The man is worthy -- nay, Owed -- a pinball machine to his geek greatness.

Heckendorn has been working on his custom pinball machine since 2005; he is considered an expert game modder and so has a bunch of other projects on the go at any given time but now Heckendorn hopes to have his Bpp game ready for playing next year. Based on the photos and videos he's showing us, the dream will be realized on time.

tMF Talkback: Anatomy of a Good Actor - The 'case' between Orlando Bloom, Ben Barnes and Johnny Depp

What constitute good acting? What makes a good actor? Are there certain steps one must follow in order to become an actor or is it a gift or a natural talent and requires no formal training? These are the questions we'll try to answer - and before we begin, let me just say, I have been patiently waiting for an 'opportunity' like this, and I would like to thank one tMF viewer for the vigorous and insightful comments on 'good acting' and the case between Ben Barnes, Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp.
