As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.
Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.

2009 was a great year for films, particularly if you’re a fan of the sci-fi genre. The year also saw the return of a beloved franchise to the big screen as well as the latest film by one of our best modern directors. And even with the current condition of the country and the economy, audiences still managed to fill theaters and the movies enjoyed record breaking successes that hopefully will continue on into the new year.
It was a year of great, and not so great, movies. Sadly, there will always be some real bombs, but that’s to be expected. Fortunately, there were also quite a few standouts that helped keep us entertained, enthralled and excited about going to the movies in 2009.
As usual with lists of this type, I need to disclaim and say this is my list of what I felt were the best films of »

Here's our first look at Atom Egoyan's Chloe, starring Liam Neeson, Julianne Moore, and Mamma Mia's Amanda Seyfried. It's a remake of the French film Nathalie, which is not a classic, but its story is functional enough that a filmmaker like Egoyan can have some good luck with it.
It's the story of a woman who suspects her husband is having an affair, so she hires an escort (Seyfried) to seduce him, directing their interactions to trap her husband into bad behavior. The film toured the fall film festivals and opens in several European countries in early March, and in the Us and Canada on March 19th.
Thanks to Filmofilia for the pictures, and you can check out a few more over there. »

Catherine (Moore) and David (Neeson) are at first glance the perfect couple. Happily married with a talented teenage son, they appear to have an idyllic life. But when David misses a flight and his surprise birthday party, Catherine’s long simmering suspicions rise to the surface.

The nominees will only be announced on 2 February and the awards given out on 7 March, but the likely contenders can already be divined
As the end of 2009 approaches we're in the thick of the Us awards season and pretty much everyone from the critics groups and some of the guilds to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Hfpa), the American Film Institute and the local barman have publicised their nominees and winners. Top 10 lists for 2009 have been drawn up, the year's most admired actors and actresses have been proposed and anointed, and the merits of the best work in directing, screenwriting, editing and all the crafts have been debated. The only body that has yet to weigh in on the virtues of Gabourey Sidibe or George Clooney or Invictus is the guardian of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Several pictures in high-resolution from Atom Egoyan-directed film "Chloe" have arrived. Obtained via FilmoFilia, the snaps feature the movie's three main cast Amanda Seyfried, Julianne Moore and Liam Neeson.
One of the stills captures Amanda's Chloe seducing Liam's David. There is also a photo of Julianne's Catherine being hugged by her husband David. The other pictures see either Chloe alone or her with Catherine.
A successful doctor, Catherine is happily married to music professor David. When she suspects that her husband is cheating on her, she hires an irresistible young woman, Chloe, to test David's fidelity and lay her suspicions and fears to rest.
Chloe's torrid tales of her encounters with David take Catherine on a journey of sexual and sensual re-discovery. But by opening the door to temptation, she puts her family in great danger. This movie is due for limited release in U.S. on March 19, 2010. Nina Dobrev, »

Chicago – There is a certain madness in the shock of grieving over a loved one who has passed that manifests itself in particular ways. Colin Firth interprets those emotions intuitively in the captivating “A Single Man.”
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Firth portrays George, a tenured literature professor at a mid-level California university in 1962. As an expatriate from Britain, he has barely adapted to the different ways of his new homeland. As the film opens, he is shown in a strange situation where he is approaching an automobile that has skidded in snowstorm. A man has been thrown from the vehicle. George kisses him.
It is learned later that Jim (Matthew Goode), his lover of 16 years, had been killed in an automobile accident. Given that gay men were mostly closeted in this era, George is not welcome at the funeral. Cut off and stranded in a life without his partner, George must wake up »

I confess, looking back, that I have no great generalizations to make about the movies that came along this decade. Except for this: There were more films of extraordinary and inspiring quality than I can count -- or include on this list. Without any trouble at all, I could easily have compiled a Top 100 list. Yet there's something about that magical arbitrary number 10 that focuses you, disciplines you, forces you to ask yourself what matters. Here, in order of preference, are the movies of the last 10 years that thrilled, moved, delighted, fascinated, and meant the most to this critic. They're »

Directed by: Tom Ford
Cast: Colin Firth, Nicholas Hoult, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode
Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: December 25, 2009
Plot: Set in Los Angeles in 1962, a 50-something professor (Firth) is mourning the loss of his lover, and trying to come with grips with a life he doesn’t want to live.
Who’S It For? It’s a period piece. It’s not a focus on gay lifestyles from the 60s as much as it is looking at love and loss. If you like Firth, you’ll definitely want to see this.
Expectations: I knew nothing. I’m always a fan of that. I didn’t even know if it was a comedy or drama (it’s a drama). I did have a hunch it might have to do with just one man, instead of a whole pile of them.
Scorecard (0-10)

Nothing gay about that. Wait...
We've made some noise about Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man, based on the Christopher Isherwood novel. The book is unabashadly the story of a gay man's life, and indeed, the movie holds true to that. But the marketing has been somewhat straightlaced, playing up the relationship between George Falconer (Colin Firth) and Charley (Julianne Moore).
Perhaps reacting to a slightly lackluster opening box office, or perhaps part of the plan all along, the movie has released a set of stills and a new trailer that get to the heart of the movie, and the relationship that Colin is mourning.
And this is what every man wants to come home to.
But the trailer is what leaves little doubt to the story, and even goes a long way to explaining some of the beautiful stills that had been released in the past. »

Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.
Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »
