Rockin' The Reel: Musicians Turned Moviemakers

27 June 2008 8:49 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Stephen Saito

As McA of the Beastie Boys, Adam Yauch has rapped about "Three MCs and One DJ," but as a filmmaker, he's had to learn to go solo. With his latest documentary "Gunnin' For That #1 Spot," Yauch is continuing the tradition of musicians who crossed over to direct movies, something that started all the way back when Frank Sinatra sat in the director's chair for 1965's World War II drama "None But the Brave." From documentaries to narratives, here's a list of modern musicians who have become filmmakers in one form or another in recent years.

Madonna

It seems as though the one place Madonna has never been able to reinvent herself is on the big screen, but that might change. Although she's had an almost disastrous track record as an actress (particularly when working with whomever was her significant other at the time), one forgets that Madonna

Opening This Week

9 June 2008 6:49 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Neil Pedley

On offer this week is a veritable gallery of the eclectic and the eccentric as M. Night Shyamalan goes R-rated, Edward Norton goes green, Werner Herzog goes to the Antarctic, and two of Herzog's fellow countrymen go to California to climb a big rock very, very quickly.

"Beauty in Trouble"

Czech director Jan Hrebejk and writer Petr Jarchovský continue their longtime collaborative partnership with this dense ensemble drama loosely inspired by Robert Graves's poem of the same name. This time, the duo who balanced humor with drama in the Oscar-nominated Holocaust-set "Divided We Fall," turn to the devastating series of floods that swept Prague in 2002, and tell the story of Marcela (Anna Geislerová), an overworked mother of two living in squalor. When her ne'er do well husband is taken in by the police, she's courted by a well-to-do businessman (Josef Abrhám) and Marcela is forced to

Paltrow Feared Hollywood Had Forgotten Her

20 May 2008 6:33 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow was desperate to return to acting after taking a break to give birth - because she feared Hollywood had forgotten about her.

The 35-year-old star took a hiatus while she was pregnant with two-year-old Moses, so she could give birth and be a full-time mum to the tot and his four-year-old sister Apple.

But Paltrow admits she spent the whole time worrying about other actresses taking her place.

When she was offered roles in new movies Iron Man and Two Lovers, Paltrow leapt at the chance to reclaim her status as one of Tinseltown's top leading ladies.

She explains, "I really did not know if there would be a place for me. Jodie Foster was right, especially if you are a woman and especially if you are not 25.

"Hollywood is pretty cut-throat, and everybody has a short memory. There is always someone who is younger or hotter or prettier."

Tabloid Reports - Foster + Partner Split

14 May 2008 6:33 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Jodie Foster has split with her longterm partner Cydney Bernard, according to U.S. tabloid reports.

The news comes just five months after the intensely private star paid tribute to her alleged partner of 14 years at an award ceremony.

The 45-year-old, who had never before acknowledged Bernard in public, gushed about her during an acceptance speech at a Los Angeles film gala in December.

Foster called her friend, "My beautiful Cydney, who sticks with me through with me through the rotten and the bliss."

An insider tells the National Enquirer, "Jodie breaking up with Cydney is shocking. Right now it's the best kept secret in Hollywood, and it's not just because Jodie is legend and an intensely private person, either.

"She and Cydney have been together for so many years and have two children together, the potential fallout and legal wrangling from this split could be monumental."

The couple has two adopted children together; Charles, nine, and Kit, six.

Foster's publicist was unavailable for comment as Wenn went to press.

Leatherheads Loses More Yardage

8 April 2008 10:33 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

As expected, Universal's George Clooney starrer Leatherheads was thrown for a bigger loss than studio executives had predicted. The period football comedy, which many analysts had suggested would be a sure winner at the box office over the weekend, came in a disappointing third with only $12.7 million. Analysts had forecast a $15-20-million take for the film. Second place went to the Jodie Foster family film Nim's Island from 20th Century Fox, which opened with $13.2 million. Holding on to the top spot was Sony's gambling flick 21, which raked in $15.3 million. Although comparisons with last year's box office was difficult because it fell on the Easter holiday then, analysts said that the overall gross was down significantly from the comparable weekend in recent years. The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. 21, Sony/Columbia, $15,337,418, 2 Wks. ($46,77,0,173); 2. Nim's Island, 20th Century Fox, $13,210,579, (New); 3. Leatherheads, Universal, $12,682,595, (New); 4. Horton Hears A Who!, 20th Century Fox, $9,115,987, 3 Wks. ($131,076,768); 5. The Ruins, Paramount, $8,003,421, (New); 6. Superhero Movie, Mgm, $5,417,920, 2 Wks. ($16,899,661); 7. Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns, Lionsgate, $3,418,255, 3 Wks. ($37,662,502); 8. Drillbit Taylor, Paramount, $3,405,937, 3 Wks. ($25,490,483); 9. Shutter, 20th Century Fox, $2,830,336, 3 Wks. ($23,138,277); 10. 10,000 B.C., Warner Bros., $2,797,409, 5 Wks. ($89,649,915).

Clooney Clobbered

7 April 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

George Clooney may have wanted to seek treatment in the E.R. over the weekend as he suffered a nasty beating at the box office. Although Leatherheads, the film he directed and starred in, had been expected to earn $15-20 million and thereby win the box office contest, it instead wound up with just 13.5 million and had to settle for second place, according to studio estimates, with some analysts predicting it will actually come in third when Sunday receipts are finally tallied. Sony/Columbia's 21, which surprisingly came in at No. 1 last week, surprisingly came in at No. 1 for the second week in a row with ticket sales of $15.1 million. The Jody Foster family film Nim's Island from 20th Century Fox came in third with $13.3 million. A third newcomer, the fright film The Ruins placed fifth with $7.8 million. In limited release, Martin Scorsese's documentary concert film Shine a Light, featuring a performance by the Rolling Stones, opened solidly with $1.5 million from 276 theaters, 93 of them giant Imax venues. Overall, the box office fell 23 percent compared to the same weekend a year ago. Some analysts blamed television's coverage of the Ncaa basketball championships, which in particular may have drawn audiences away from the sports-themed Leatherheads. The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers:1. 21, $15.1 million; 2. Leatherheads, $13.5 million; 3. Nim's Island, $13.3 million; 4. Horton Hears a Who!, $9.1 million; 5. The Ruins, $7.8 million; 6. Superhero Movie, $5.4 million; 7. Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, $3.51 million; 8. Drillbit Taylor, $3.5 million; 9. Shutter, $2.9 million; 10. 10,000 B.C., $2.8 million.

21 Beats Clooney's Leatherheads

6 April 2008 6:15 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

America's film fans gambled on Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth for a second week, giving the couple's Las Vegas film 21 the edge over George Clooney's sports comedy Leatherheads at the box office.

The gambling film took in just over $15 million (GBP7.5 million) at the U.S. box office during its second weekend on release to extend its stay at the top of the box office to two weeks.

Leatherheads opened in second place with a disappointing $13.4 million (GBP6.7 million), just ahead of Jodie Foster's new family film Nim's Island, which has debuted at three on the new chart.

Rounding out the top five is Jim Carrey's animated comedy Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! and horror film The Ruins, which is the only other new entry in this weekend's top 10.

Foster Wants Her Kids To Direct

6 April 2008 8:03 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Jodie Foster wants her children to join her in the movie business - but as directors instead of actors.

The actress insists she would never ban her two sons, Charles, nine, and Kit, six, from following in her footsteps - but she would rather they worked behind the camera, and she is already teaching them tricks of the trade.

Foster tells Aol movies, "If they begged and begged and begged (to act), I would understand. I try to get them interested in the technical side of filmmaking.

"I say, 'I wonder how they did that. Do you think they did it with a blue screen?'

"I try to get them interested in lenses or just de-mystifying it (filmmaking) a little bit for them. It's a beautiful business. I want them to love films, but I want them to be on the side of it that I think, in some ways, can be the most rewarding."

Jodie Foster channelled her inner rock star during an appearance on U.S. TV show Rachael Ray on Friday - the Oscar winner showed off her skills playing video game Guitar Hero.

The actress, famed for starring in hard-hitting dramas such as last year's The Brave One, aired her lighter side playing the Wii game's strap-on guitar controller to

Kiss classic Rock 'N' Roll All Night.

But Foster, who plays the Guitar Hero at home with her two young boys, was taken aback when she realised the game's difficulty level had been set to 'hard'.

She told the audience, "You have it on hard. You're not supposed to have it on hard already."

Clooney Set To Score With Leatherheads

4 April 2008 11:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Analysts are betting the bank on Leatherheads, directed by and starring George Clooney, to score the winning touchdown at the box office this weekend. Its main competition will be family film Nim's Island, starring Jodie Foster, from Walden Media and 20th Century Fox. Leatherheads is expected to open with about $15-20 million in ticket sales, while projections for Nim's average between $13 million and $16 million. Also entering the fray is The Ruins, a fright flick from DreamWorks and Spyglass Entertainment. Although the film is expected to gross $6-8 million, buzz on the Internet has been mostly positive, and its take could wind up being considerably higher.

Nim's Island

3 April 2008 2:07 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

A kiddie adventure film set in motion by a horrifying act of neglect, Nim's Island casts Gerard Butler and Little Miss Sunshine star Abigail Breslin as a father/daughter team who enjoy an idyllic existence on an otherwise uninhabited South Pacific island. Butler conducts research on microplankton; Breslin befriends local animals and reads voraciously, especially the pulpy tales starring, and apparently written by, an Indiana Jones-like adventurer named Alex Ryder (also played by Butler in fantasy sequences). All seems to be going well until Butler decides to take a two-day research jaunt at sea, only to hit a storm that leaves him stranded, while Breslin wonders whether her dad is ever coming back. By sheer coincidence, she receives an e-mail from Ryder, asking a question about her island's inactive volcano. Not realizing that Alex Ryder is actually Alexandra Ryder (Jodie Foster), an agoraphobic San Francisco author, Breslin asks her for.

Clean + Tidy Foster Obsessive Around The House

1 April 2008 10:28 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Jodie Foster has to turn to yoga, the gym and hiking in a bid to calm her neuroses - or she'd go mad when her quirky household rules are broken.

The Oscar winner admits she can be a tyrant around the house, because she's particular about so many things.

She explains, "I have a lot of anal habits - I squeegee out my shower every single time I take it. And I'm just a dictator about my cappuccino maker - nobody else is allowed to touch it because they don't clean it up properly.

"I also like my towels folded in thirds and when the kids don't (do that), I'm like, 'Well, use your own towels. Don't use my towels!'

"The way I cope with all my neuroses is I just get out of my head - go to the gym, ski or do yoga or hike."

Foster Pleased Kids Can See Her New Family Film

1 April 2008 10:28 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The recent premiere of Jodie Foster's new movie Nim's Island marked the first time the actress' two children were allowed into a screening of one of their mother's films.

Foster's kids, Charles, nine, and Kit, six, were forbidden from leaving the actress' trailer on the set of her recent vigilante movie The Brave One, in which she plays a woman who embarks on a revenge mission after she is brutally attacked.

So Foster was relieved she could finally take her kids to family film Nim's Island's premiere over the weekend (29/30Mar08).

She says, "It's the first movie (of mine) my kids ever saw at a movie theatre, the first premiere they've been able to go to.

"The last movie (I made) they couldn't even see the commercials. They came to the set but had to stay in my trailer."

Lion Mauling Left Foster Fearful Of Cats

1 April 2008 6:57 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Jodie Foster has had a life-long fear of cats since she was almost mauled to death by a lion when she was eight years old.

The actress was a child star on the set of 1972 movie Napoleon And Samantha, when a big cat co-star lashed out at her.

Foster remembers, "I was walking ahead of him. He was on an invisible leash, some piano wire. He got sick of me being slow, picked my up and held me sideways and shook me like a doll.

"I was in shock and thought it was an earthquake. I turned around and saw the entire crew running off in the other direction.

"The trainer then said, 'Drop it' and he opened his mouth and dropped me."

Foster insists she had no problem returning to the set two weeks later and firmly believes the animal spared her life - but she admits the incident 36 years ago has left her wary of all kinds of felines.

The 45-year-old - who plays a phobic adventurer in new movie Nim's Castle - tells U.S. talk show host Jay Leno, "Now cats freak me out a little bit."

Opening This Week

By Neil Pedley

This week is something of a nostalgia trip with a period comedy, Freddie Prinze Jr. and a concert documentary about a group of men who, by all the laws of man and nature, should not still be alive and walking around.

"The Flight of the Red Balloon"

After being nominated for the Palme d'Or an incredible five times at Cannes, it's no wonder that director Hou Hsiao-hsien has become a Francophile. In his first film outside of Asia, the "Three Times" auteur directs the country's first lady of cinema, Juliette Binoche, in a story about an overburdened mother who receives a much-needed lift from her son's Chinese nanny (Song Fang) as they turn the City of Lights into a magical playground for the 7-year-old Simon . a tribute to Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short.
