The view: Richard Kelly enters The Twilight Zone with The Box

13 November 2009 6:33 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Rod Serling's ghostly shadow looms large over the latest film from the director of Donnie Darko – but what's the problem? It's a hell of a show to take cues from

In certain eyes, the impending release of The Box, the third film from the still more-or-less boyish Richard Kelly, will be notable mostly as a trial by public opinion for its creator. This is, after all, quite the crossroads for a director whose deservedly beloved debut Donnie Darko proposed him as the emo David Lynch before its follow-up Southland Tales instantly made a lot of us stick a large and hasty question mark beside that judgment. Much therefore rides on his latest project. But, for me, the mixed response to the movie so far – out in the Us last week, released here next month – has been interesting not just for its implications about Kelly's future, but because almost every »

15 Hilarious Japanese Commercials Starring Hollywood Actors

13 November 2009 6:32 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The announcement that Quentin Tarantino recently starred in a Japanese Softbank commercial has been making headlines [1] around the web this week, and I am still not quite sure why people are making such a big deal out of it. It's no surprise that Qt is somewhat well-versed in Japanese culture and no surprise that he enjoys hamming it up for the camera either. More to the point, I don't think these goofy commercials are quite as detrimental to a celebrity's reputation as it once was believed. After YouTube and websites like Japander [2] spread them across the internet for the whole world to see, and Bill Murray poked fun at the practice in Lost in Translation, it's easy to see why the Hollywood elite shied away for a while. However, lately Japanese commercials seem to be back in vogue, and we are even starting to see domestic ads becoming more acceptable as well. »

James Cameron would love to work with Kate Winslet again, but isn't sure about Leonardo DiCaprio.

The director - who worked alongside Kate and Leonardo when they played the lead roles in 'Titanic', one of the highest grossing films of all time - said he loved the way  'The Reader' actress worked.

He told Playboy magazine: "I'd certainly work with Kate Winslet again; she's very talented.

"Whereas Leo DiCaprio switches his acting on and off like a faucet, Kate's acting process is to internalise all this stuff and use it."

He also revealed he was not particularly interested in making the shipwreck disaster film, and did it largely for the money.

He added: "I made Titanic because I wanted to dive to a shipwreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie. 'Titanic' was about 'f**k you' money."

Cameron has recently finished Sci-fi adventure 'Avatar', »

12 November 2009 4:00 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Kate Winslet was on school run duty Tuesday as she picked up kids Mia and Joe in NYC. She's enjoying a little break between projects as she spends time in the Big Apple with her kids, though Kate is rumored to be attached to an upcoming project for HBO. She may be chilling out, but her legal team has been working overtime to secure her a victory in a libel suit against the Daily Mail newspaper. Hopefully Kate had a spare minute to put in a birthday phone call to her good friend Leonardo DiCaprio - he just turned 35 and we celebrated with a walk down memory lane. View 5 Photos › »

The Birthday Boys and Girls of 11/11

1821 Fyodor Dostoevsky, legendary Russian author of Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov fame. So many movies inspired by his work. But he's not the legendary Russian author that'll be getting all the press this next couple of months. That'd be Leo Tolstoy, soon to be chattered about when The Last Station emerges as an Oscar contender.

1887 Roland Young, popular 30s and 40s character actor (Topper, The Philadelphia Story, Ruggles of Red Gap)

1898 René Clair, (pictured left), wonderful French writer/director. If you've never seen Le Million I urge you to rent it maintenant. His Oscar nominated films include The Gates of Paris (1957) and À nous la liberté (1931)

1899 Pat O'Brien --Ewwww, not that one people -- the actor! whose film career stretches alllllll the way from the 1931 classic The Front Page to 1981's Ragtime.

Cameron: 'Titanic Was Made To Fund Shipwreck Dive'

11 November 2009 12:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Moviemaker James Cameron has revealed the biggest film of all time was only made to fund a deep-sea mission to the real Titanic.

The director admits he had no intention of making an epic when he set out to film Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1997 movie - he just wanted to make enough money to go on a dream dive.

He tells Playboy magazine, "I made Titanic because I wanted to dive to the shipwreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie.

"The Titanic was the Mount Everest of shipwrecks, and, as a diver, I wanted to do it right.

"When I learned some other guys had dived to the Titanic to make an IMAX (jumbo-screen) movie, I said. 'I'll make a Hollywood movie to pay for an expedition to do the same thing.'

"Titanic was about 'f**k you money'. It came along at a point in my life when I said, 'I can make movies until I'm 80, but I can't do expedition stuff when I'm 80.'" »

Cameron Insists Winslet's Titantic Troubles Weren't That Bad

10 November 2009 5:36 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Moviemaker James Cameron hopes to work with Titanic star Kate Winslet again even though the actress once revealed the intense director tried to drown her.

Stars of Cameron's films have often criticised the filmmaker for his extreme techniques - and Winslet went public with the fact she often prayed for death during miserable water tank scenes in Titanic.

But the director feels sure the Brit was simply over-exaggerating the fact she almost died while making the blockbuster love story.

He tells Playboy magazine, "We simply let Kate think she was nearly drowning. A little spluttering and coughing does not count in my book, because I have almost drowned several times and I know what it feels like.

"Asking God to please let you die? I was thinking the same thing at about the same point (in the film)... Kate probably got some unnecessary stress from me, but I would say 99 per cent of her stress was internally induced as part of her acting process.

"The real question is, 'Would she work with me again...?' My guess is, absolutely. I'd certainly work with her again; she's very talented."

But Cameron suggests he has no plans to work with her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio again: "Leo DiCaprio switches his acting on and off like a faucet." »

Nicolas Cage spent his fortune on lots of stuff

10 November 2009 5:03 AM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Nicolas Cage once spent $276,000 on a 67-million-year-old dinosaur skull. The 'National Treasure' actor - who has been forced to put several of his properties on the market after failing to pay millions of dollars of tax - filed a lawsuit in October claiming Samuel Levin, his former manager led him "down a path of financial ruin". The 45-year-old American actor - whose films have grossed a collective $3.9 billion - owes $6 million in back taxes from 2007 and it is only now his extravagant purchases have come to light. The most bizarre purchase was in 2007 when he outbid 'Titantic' actor Leonardo DiCaprio for a $276,000 skull claimed to be from a prehistoric beast. »

Cage Outbid DiCaprio For Dinosaur Skull

10 November 2009 4:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Nicolas Cage once outbid Leonardo DiCaprio for a dinosaur skull.

The odd item, which the movie star bought at auction for $276,000 (£172,500), is one of many collectors pieces up for sale or in foreclosure - made necessary by the fact Cage owes $6 million (£3.75 million) in back taxes.

Listing the movie star's collectables, New York magazine reveals the ancient skull wasn't the actor's only elaborate indulgence - he also owns a jet and two yachts, three castles, two islands in the Bahamas and "a dozen or so" mansions.

His 50 cars include a $495,000 (£309,375) Lamborghini once owned by the Shah of Iran. »
