2009: A Look Back

6 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

2009 was another big year for movies thanks to, in varying degrees, the recession, 3D ticket prices and Taylor Lautner’s abs. For funsies we have compiled a fairly trivial movie calendar for the year that was. Here you will find all the big events that, for whatever reason, may not have gotten a lot of media coverage.  Hit the jump to begin reminiscing about the past 12 months:

January

9- David S. Goyer does his best to stop Odette Yustman from ever getting another leading role in a film. (The Unborn)

16- Mall cops lose what little public respect they had. (Paul Blart:  Mall Cop)

23- Brendan Fraser ruins an otherwise perfectly good British film. (Inkheart)

30- Liam Neeson gains 20,000 cool points. (Taken)

-

February

6- Steve Martin makes a big mistake. (The Pink Panther 2)

13- The rules of scary movies are upheld. (Friday the 13th)

20- Madea goes to jail. »

The best films of 2009

9 hours ago | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

Since Moses brought the tablets down from the mountain, lists have come in tens, not that we couldn't have done with several more commandments. Who says a year has Ten Best Films, anyway? Nobody but readers, editors, and most other movie critics. There was hell to pay last year when I published my list of Twenty Best. You'd have thought I belched at a funeral. So this year I have devoutly limited myself to exactly ten films.

On each of two lists.

The lists are divided into Mainstream Films and Independent Films. This neatly sidesteps two frequent complaints: (1) "You name all those little films most people have never heard of," and (2) "You pick all blockbusters and ignore the indie pictures." Which is is my official Top Ten? They both are equal, and every film here is entitled to name itself "One of the Year's 10 Best!"

Alphabetically:

Hey, Hot Stuff! Which Celeb Bundles Up the Best?

12 hours ago | E! Online - UK | See recent E! Online - UK news »

Not all celebrities are jetting off to fancy sunny locales to escape this thing called winter. Nope, some of them do what the rest of us have to do—pile on the designer coats and deal with it. But unlike the rest of us, just by stepping outside, they have unwittingly been entered in a little competition: the Best Bundler Up of the Holiday Season 2009. First we have Brad Pitt, wearing a black double-breasted hooded coat in New York City as he visits Angelina on the Salt set. Pros: his daughters. Cons: the beard (duh). It's him against the ladies. Challenging Brad is... Heidi Klum, in all-white ice-skating in Aspen. Then we have Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, who has been embracing the cute winter »

Top 25 Movies of 2009 #1 - 10

Here we are, time for all of us to reveal our top ten films of 2009. Many of you wondered why I only allowed you to pick five films in the nominations poll I started on Monday. Well, everything was in an effort to make sure you all held your lists until today as I reveal my top ten favorite films of 2009 and hope you will add your thoughts on my list as well as share your individual lists of 10, 15, 20 or however many films from the year that was. We have only a couple of days left before 2010 shuts the door on what I thought was a rather enjoyable year in film once you brush away a few of those lousy blockbusters that weren't.

Before I go any further, let me once again share the schedule as I promised I would include with each posting on Monday:

Spotted: Leighton Meester Gets Up In The Club

14 hours ago | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Every day a multitude of stars wanders through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

It's freezing cold here in New York, so anybody who has the wherewithal to spend the winter months in warm weather climates has the right idea. Even though Leighton Meester makes her living on "Gossip Girl" (which films on location in Manhattan), she used her time off from the show to head to Miami Beach for the opening of Klutch, a new nightclub. That dress she is wearing wouldn't fly in the arctic tundra that is NYC right now, but the Florida heat is treating her quite nicely. Meester has plenty to celebrate, as she gave her music career a healthy kickstart with »

Angelina Jolie was hard at work filming Salt in NYC yesterday, but once the evening rolled around she welcomed some company on set. Brad Pitt stopped by, bringing their daughters Shiloh and Zahara along for the trip. Their oldest girls have been able to see the sights during their latest stay on the East Coast, from family lunches to pre-Christmas shopping outings. The Jolie-Pitts never stay in one place too long as they go about their jet-setting routine, but they seem settled for now in the city they called home earlier this year. Pitt For Sherlock Holmes Sequel?

30 December 2009 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Guy Ritchie is keen to sign up Brad Pitt to star in the sequel to Sherlock Holmes, according to reports.

The director, who worked alongside Pitt in 2000's Snatch, was rumoured to have considered the actor for a cameo role in the new big screen adaptation of the famous detective stories.

But Ritchie is now thought to be eyeing Pitt for the role of Holmes' arch enemy Professor Moriarty in the follow-up movie.

Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. have both reportedly already signed up for the second installment.

A source tells PopEater.com, "The director, Guy Ritchie, loves Brad. He has worked with him before and thinks he is one of the most underrated actors working today. Guy knows that everyone thinks of as a Pitt as a pretty boy and can't wait to turn him into the world's greatest supervillain. It will definitely make the sequel a must-see." »

Brad and Angie Killed Pmk

29 December 2009 2:11 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Not so long ago, the letters Pmk were the three most feared in Hollywood. Now the upcoming takeover of the one-time celebrity publicity giant by a communications firm known primarily for its corporate clients has made everyone in Hollywood ask: how could this happen? How could a company that was once so powerful it could literally dictate what questions reporters could ask Tom Cruise be gobbled up so easily? The surprising answer: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. "The day the two biggest stars in Hollywood decided to fire their personal publicist and not replace them, the whole world of publicity changed forever. They proved that stars didn't need publicists anymore to communicate. And every celebrity watches Brad and Angie," Bonnie Fuller, President and Editor and Chief of HollywoodLife.com told me. 2010 movie preview: 15 films you probably didn’t know you should be excited for

29 December 2009 9:37 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

A few days back John made the rather excellent list of 15 films that are sure to get audience’s pulses racing with anticipation for next year. Yet away from the marketing hype, pre-release publicity and away from the A-List names there are a slew of movies that, whilst not overly commercially minded, look like they may just be delightful. Some might be sleeper hits, some might not. Either way here is a list of 15 films, five each from the U.S., Asia and Europe, you may not have heard of to look out for next year:

The United States

The Fighter

Perhaps tainted by Christian Bale’s lost lustre or director David O. Russell’s reputation, The Fighter is receiving much less attention than I initially envisioned. Mark Wahlberg is to star in the lead role of professional boxer “Irish” Micky Ward with Bale as his half brother. The Fighter »
