‘For Your Consideration’ Ads Get Desperate

29 November 2009 4:22 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

This year the Academy has expanded the “Best Picture” category to 10 nominees, which opens the door to even more expensive Oscar campaigns from major Hollywood studios.  Every year the “For Your Consideration” ads pop up on popular industry websites like Variety but, as the Playlist points out, this year has been especially laughable as companies vie for one of those slots with a few questionable picks.

For example, Sony Pictures is pushing 2012 for consideration in unknown categories, though these campaigns are usually just “notice us for anything, please!”  Presumably it has a shot at a visual effects nod, though it doesn’t deserve one.  I can’t imagine it being nominated for anything but Razzies, really.  Sony is also advertising This Is It, which already missed the short list for “Best Documentary,” so apparently they think it’s worthy of “every [other] category conceivable” at the suggestion of crazy Elizabeth Taylor. »

Rupert Everett | I wouldn't advise any actor thinking of his career to come out

28 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He had Hollywood at his feet at the age of 25. So why has Rupert Everett never lived up to that early promise? Here, the outspoken actor talks about homophobia, deranged A-listers and why Madonna isn't speaking to him

Can anyone look more world weary than Rupert Everett? At certain points in the interview, he gives the impression of having been in the acting game since at least the dawn of time, if not before. These are eyes that have seen it all – glittering success, abject failure, critical acclaim, the best reviews on earth, the worst. But then, at times, his career trajectory has resembled the cardiogram of a 60-a-day, overweight smoker: up, down, up, critical, dead, alive again! He was a star at 22, a has-been at 30, a Hollywood ingenue at 40, and here he is again, aged 50, still handsome, still game, gadding around in the new St Trinian's film in a »

This week's DVD and Blu-ray releases

Inglourious Basterds

DVD & Blu-ray, Universal

It's taken a decade for this to arrive (no time wasted on spellcheck, though), and Quentin Tarantino's epic second world war romp is the best thing he's done in ages. It's deceptively Tarantino-esque; just because it's a period piece doesn't mean he skimps on his trademark pop-culture references. It's just that here he geeks out not on Les Big Macs and exploitation movies but on 1920s/30s German cinema, which certainly separates the men from the (fan)boys. You don't need a diploma in German mountain movies to have fun with this, though. The tale, delivered in five generous interlocking chapters, is told masterfully. Just when you think one segment is beginning to outstay its welcome, a stylish twist is performed. Unusually for Tarantino, there's a good spread of performances too. Where his films normally play like a group of actors taking turns to »

Caine Awestruck By Taylor's Professionalism

27 November 2009 12:21 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sir Michael Caine begged Dame Elizabeth Taylor to "fluff" her lines as they filmed Zee And Co. - because she was outshining him with her perfect performance.

The Alife star has performed opposite a number of top actresses in his career, including Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron and Scarlett Johansson, but he insists Taylor was the most impressive leading lady.

And he reveals the veteran actress was so well-prepared when she showed up on the set of the 1972 drama, she made him look like an amateur.

He tells Total Film, "I remember I was doing a movie with Elizabeth Taylor a long time ago and I didn't know what to expect - lots of tantrums, probably. But she was completely professional, knew her lines before she turned up, never had any temper tantrums. She was quite amazing. She never fluffed. I bloody do that, you know? In the end, I said, 'Will you muck up your delivery so I look good?' So she did." »

War of the Welles: Seven Actors Who've Played Orson

26 November 2009 7:15 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" is about one man from many perspectives. As a reporter travels the country in search of the meaning of Charles Foster Kane's last words, he hears stories about the man from wives, co-workers, friends, and guardians, all of whom see Kane's life differently. In the trailer, Welles describes the many dimensions of his character in the narration: "Kane is a hero, and a scoundrel, a no account and a swell guy. A great lover, a great American citizen and a dirty dog."

Certainly, Welles believed that one man could encompass all of these dissimilar traits. And in recent years, enough actors have portrayed enough variations of Welles himself to suggest that the acting/directing wunderkind, like Kane, was just as complex an individual. Some films have portrayed him as a hero, others as a scoundrel. Some, like Richard Linklater's new film "Me and Orson Welles, »

Roman Polanski has been granted $4.5 million bail, clearing the way for the fugitive director to move within days from a Swiss jail to house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Alpine resort chalet. The justice minister said Wednesday she saw no reason to appeal the surprise decision by the Swiss Criminal Court. Polanski would have to remain in Switzerland as authorities assess whether to extradite him to the U.S. for having sex in Los Angeles in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said the final decision on transferring Polanski to his chalet in the Swiss resort of Gstaad would be made "quickly.""The 76-year-old appellant is married and the father of two minors," the court said as it considered Polanski's offer of a cash bail secured by his apartment in Paris. Zsa Zsa: 'I'm Not Dead Yet'

19 November 2009 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood icon Zsa Zsa Gabor wants to live out her days as a Beverly Hills recluse - but she's not ready to die just yet, according to her husband.

Frederic Prinz von Anhalt has taken to TV in America in a bid to dismiss reports his 92-year-old wife is close to death.

And he insists she simply doesn't want to be seen out and about.

He tells news show Entertainment Tonight, "My wife is not dying - it is ridiculous. She gets all the tabloids and she sees the things and she just smiles."

Gabor was left wheelchair bound after a car accident and a stroke, but she's happy to enjoy life confined in her Bel Air mansion.

Anhalt adds, "She doesn't want to get out. I try everything. I show her pictures of Liz Taylor, a very good friend of hers, and I say, 'Look, Liz is going out in a wheelchair.' I say, 'Why don't you go?'

"(She says), 'Well, Liz is a big star, I'm not a big star. I don't want people to see me.'" »

Farber on Film: Introduction, Part 3 (Farber Before Negative Space)

18 November 2009 7:43 AM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

You don’t necessarily think of Manny Farber as your Baedeker to the shadings and luridities of mainstay American movie acting, as a dab hand of the concise plot summary that uncoils into deft film critique, or associate him with audience recommendations and words like “marvelous,” “sensitive,” “poignant,” and “sparkling.” You particularly don’t think of Farber this way if your experience of his writing is confined to Negative Space. Yet consider three short illustrative moments from his many, sometimes-weekly film columns of the 1940s and '50s.

This is Farber on Frank Sinatra & Co. in From Here to Eternity for The Nation, August 29, 1953:

The laurel wreaths should be handed out to an actor who isn’t even in the picture, Marlon Brando, and to an unknown person who first decided to use Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed in the unsweetened roles of Maggio, a tough little Italian American soldier, »

On November 11, 1994, the day after the final episode of The Real World: San Francisco aired, Pedro Zamora succumbed to complications from AIDS. Most of the world had only known him since June of that year, but the 22-year-old had made the most of the short time he’d spent on earth.

Born in Cuba, raised in Miami, Pedro was diagnosed as HIV+ while still in high school, and had dedicated his life to being an educator on the disease.  Prior to appearing on the groundbreaking MTV reality show, he had already spoken about the disease with Oprah Winfrey, Phil Donahue, and before a session of Congress.

But it was by appearing on The Real World: San Francisco that he managed to have a global impact. For many young people, Pedro was the first real, out gay man they ever saw »

tMF Talkback: Is James Franco trying to re-invent himself?

12 November 2009 9:55 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Is James Franco trying to re-invent himself? Is there really such a need for that? I mean, the guy is popular and well-respected for his talent - he's good at comedy, drama, action-thriller. Now he's doing soap opera! Is there something going on? Apparently there is. Movieline did an interview with 'Carter', considered Franco's frequent artistic collaborator, to find out what the actor is up to.  I'm not too sure what 'artistic collaborator' means really, but I had a bad feeling... Anyway, let's take a closer look...

Erased James Franco by Carter [ see note below ]

- - - Some of you may already know, Franco is doing a soap opera - General Hospital, aside from six major movies in various production stages. The popular soap is more than 40 years on television and still retains loyal viewers, but why would meone like James Franco be interested in joining the cast? »

On Tuesday, Judge Mitchell Beckloff rebuffed Joseph Jackson's bid to block the appointment of attorney John Branca and music exec John McClain to the position of co-executors of Michael Jackson's estate, saying that the family patriarch had no standing on the matter because he was not named a beneficiary in his son's will.

Joseph Jackson had raised an objection to the judge appointing the two men to the official position of executors, filing court papers on Monday claiming that Michael believed Branca and McClain were defrauding him, according to the Los Angeles Times. Joseph, who was cut out of his son's will, also asked the estate to cover more than $20,000 a month in living expenses, claiming that he is entitled to the "same manner" of support as his estranged wife, »

Birthday Suits: Oscar-Snubbed

Today's birthday list doesn't make me feel celebratory so much as oscarighteously furious. Perhaps I should explain. It's only the four first birthday boys whipping me into a golden frenzy. Then things calm down.

Claude, Ann and Dick

Todays Birthdays 11/10

1889 Claude Rains, never won an Oscar. This despite being a great screen actor, whose filmography reads like a catalogue of Golden Age greatness. He's an actor who made indelible contributions to not 1, not 2 but 7 Best Picture nominees, a number that doesn't even reflect films like Notorious, Now Voyager, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, Mrs. Skeffington or The Greatest Story Ever Told. He didn't even get an honorary statue!

1925 Richard Burton, never won an Oscar. This despite winning exactly as many nominations as Liz Taylor won husbands.

1928 Ennio Moriccone has never won an Oscar. This despite being a world reknowned composer, being worshipped by film fanatics and revolutionizing how people scored Westerns. »

Michael Jackson's Funeral Didn't Just Look Like a Million Bucks

It cost big bucks to lay Michael Jackson to rest. Court documents obtained by E! News show that funeral expenses amounted to nearly $1 million from start to finish, security to sarcophagus. Jackson's estate petitioned the court in September to approve the immediate release of the funds from the King of Pop's fortune to pay for the proceedings. Per the paperwork, $855,730 was owed to Forest Lawn Memorial Park & Mortuary, where Jackson was interred at a service attended by his whole family, close friends like Quincy Jones and Elizabeth Taylor, many celebrities and a few unwelcome news helicopters. The Glendale cemetery charged $590,000 for the Holly Terrace sarcophagus that holds... »
