Grace Kelly on TCM: Rear Window, The Country Girl

10 November 2009 10:46 PM, PST | Alternative Film Guide | See recent Alternative Film Guide news »

James Stewart, Grace Kelly in Rear Window Turner Classic Movies‘ Grace Kelly series continues this Thursday, Nov. 12, with three of Kelly’s biggest hits, all from 1954: Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, and The Country Girl. Kelly, who died in 1982 following a car accident in Monaco, would have turned 80 on Nov. 12. Some consider Dial M for Murder a minor Alfred Hitchcock effort. Personally, I find it more enjoyable than Hitchcock’s revered Rear Window. Part of the reason is a pair of deadly scissors found in the former but not in the latter; yet, I’d say that the chief reason is that neither one of Kelly’s leading men in Dial M for Murder is James Stewart. Instead, [...] »

Movie Reviews: “The Men Who Stare At Goats”

6 November 2009 10:23 PM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

We get more paranormal activity this week in The Men Who Stare at Goats, starring George Clooney, Jeff Bridges and Stephen Lang about a reporter's efforts to reveal the story of an Army unit (supposedly real) seeking to harness the parapsychology for the benefit of the U.S. The movie, writes Steven Rea in the Philadelphia Inquirer, "has a glorious good time satirizing the extravagant lengths to which the military and intelligence establishments will go if they think there's a payoff at the other end." That's especially true in the case of Clooney, several critics observe. Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel, for example, observes that "'Wacky' isn't George Clooney's strong suit as an actor. But it's always at least amusing to watch the suave, silky leading man let his freak flag fly." In the San Francisco Chronicle Mick Lasalle writes that the movie shows just how far Clooney has come in his acting ability, "building a screen identity that's as specific and engaging as that of any classic film star. Like a James Stewart or a John Wayne, Clooney represents something just standing there - integrity, shrewdness, irony and self-deprecation. Or, to put it simply, today's American man." But Kenneth Turan in the Los Angeles Times writes that although the movie may have initially been conceived as a showcase for Clooney, "more or less stealing the picture from Clooney is Jeff Bridges, an actor you can never see often enough." »

De Niro to the 7th? (Oscar's Male Hierarchy)

6 November 2009 3:46 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Have you been buying the minor huzz (hype+buzz) 'Robert De Niro's 7th Oscar nomination' for the holiday film Everybody's Fine? My friend txt critic saw it last night and sent the following note by phone...

it's, well, fine. most definitely a drama (despite the trailer) and conceptually a cross between About Schmidt and Four Christmases. nice, sweet and somewhat forgettable.

might, Might be a nomination for DeNiro, but i wouldn't bet on it.I dunno. I wasn't betting on it either but Best Actor sure seems vacant this year with only Colin Firth (A Single Man) and George Clooney (Up in the Air) catching any sort of real fire. As I've been saying for months, Fox Searchlight shouldn't have even hesitated to position Crazy Heart for a 2009 release. Jeff Bridges would have a clear shot at the career trophy given the field (if -- and it's always »

Christmas is coming, and Disney’s getting fat

6 November 2009 2:18 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Christmas is a bit like the flu. You are forced to lie around all day, watch crap TV, consume lots of food you wouldn’t normally eat, and each year both seem to arrive earlier and than the last. This year I had flu fashionably early, setting the trend  in July while London’s utterly loathsome and incompetent  major, Boris Johnson has been bribed by Disney to switch on the Oxford Street Christmas lights purely to coincide with the release of, A Christmas Carol, this week. They even allowed the films star Jim Carrey to switch the buggers on!!!!!  Yet, directed by Robert (Forest Gump , Back to the Future) Zemeckis this 3D animated adaptation of the Dickens tale is not aimed at kids of all ages. I’d say, due to it’s thoroughly creepy protagonists, nightmarish scenes of ghouls taking their jaws off and spectres chasing ol’ Scrooge through dark alleys, »

Matthew Modine: The Hollywood Interview

Matthew Modine: Better Angels

By

Alex Simon

Matthew Modine has been something of an iconoclast most of his working life. After being groomed for ‘80s teen idol status in early films such as Private School and Vision Quest, Modine was also one of the first actors of his generation, along with Sean Penn, to take on riskier projects, such as Robert Altman's Streamers, Alan Parker’s Birdy, Gillian Armstrong’s Mrs. Soffel, and Alan J. Pakula’s Orphans. It was his lead role as the cynical Marine Private Joker in Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam epic Full Metal Jacket that put Modine into the pantheon of young actors who were more than just pretty faces and knowing winks at the camera. This, after all, was the young man who turned down the lead in Top Gun, arguably the prototypical ‘80s blockbuster, due to its cold war politics. From the beginning, »

Oscars 2010: Hugh Jackman Out, Neil Patrick Harris In?

30 October 2009 10:50 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

If you’re like me and very much enjoyed the job Hugh Jackman did hosting the Oscars last year, you’ll maybe be a bit disappointed to learn that he probably won’t be hosting the ceremony when that time rolls around again early next year. /Film reports that sources are saying that although he’s not ruling out hosting the Oscars in future years to come, he doesn’t want to do it two years in a row.

Personally, I don’t really see the issue there – Jackman did a great job and whether he repeats that success a few years down the line or the year after doesn’t really matter (Billy Crystal did it four years in a row from ‘89-’92). But that’s just me.

Anyway, that now leaves the position open to other entertaining people to step in and pick up the reigns now that »

Watch This: Kevin Spacey's Uncanny Knack for Impersonations

29 October 2009 2:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Kevin Spacey is a talented actor, there's no denying that, but who knew that the man of a million characters was also a man of a million impersonations? Oh, you did? Well, you must have already seen Spacey's appearance on James Lipton's "Inside the Actor's Studio" from back in July of 2000. Or maybe you saw him in his great "Saturday Night Live" skit in which he does Christopher Walken auditioning for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars.

Okay, so maybe it's no big secret that the man who blindsided moviegoers in The Usual Suspects has a special talent for camouflaging himself in the skin of his acting peers, but it's new to me, and that means it's bound to be new to someone else. Below is a clip from Spacey's aforementioned trip to the "Actor's Studio" in which he goes along with a silly game of Lipton's. »

Villains We Love: Mr. Potter, 'It's a Wonderful Life'

7 October 2009 6:48 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I think it's time we all took another look at Mr. Henry F. Potter, the heartless businessman played by Lionel Barrymore in the 1946 classic holiday film It's a Wonderful Life. Yes, he's a crotchety old slumlord who wants to buy out the Bailey Building and Loan and not let "lazy rabble" have mortgages, but in the current economy, you have to wonder if some of his policies made sense. Adam Gopnik in The New Yorker points out that Jimmy Stewart's George Bailey was handing out a lot of sub-prime mortgages to bad risks, which is maybe not something we'd consider praiseworthy these days.

In addition, as I grow older, the hypothetical Pottersville doesn't look all that bad to me -- it's not nearly as lurid as Vegas or the French Quarter. Perhaps I've been prejudiced by one of my favorite short stories, Bradley Denton's "The Calvin Coolidge Home for Dead Comedians, »

Robert Downey Jr. To Star in Spielberg's 'Harvey' Remake?

1 October 2009 5:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Now that we've all had enough time to get used to the idea that Spielberg is about to remake one of the most respected films in history, maybe it will help a little to know that it might star Robert Downey Jr. According to the La Times' Hero Complex blog, the announcement is imminent that Downey will be starring in Spielberg's update of the classic film, which marks a change from some of the other names that had been attached, including the obvious heir apparent to Jimmy Stewart (and long time Spielberg cohort) Tom Hanks and Will Smith.

Harvey was the story of a gentle soul by the name of Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, who happens to be an invisible six-foot rabbit named Harvey. The original play won the Pulitzer Prize, but most of us probably remember the 1950 film starring Jimmy Stewart as Dowd. News of the remake hit back in August, »

The original movie, which was based on a Pulitzer-winning play, scored Stewart an Oscar nomination. Other actors who've been bandied about for the lead role of Elwood P. Robert Downey Jr. Going from Playboy to Bunny?

30 September 2009 8:20 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

We may see that giant rabbit yet. After reigniting his career as billionaire playboy Tony Stark in Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to star in the Steven Spielberg-directed remake of the Jimmy Stewart classic Harvey, reports the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex blog. The original, as you may recall, tells the story of a man whose Bff is a large bunny that no one else can see. This creates problems. Still, with the supertalented star on a roll with bad-ass parts in Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, this could be a fun change of pace. Or a disappointment. Oh, who knows? But we would go see this based on Rdj alone. Would you? »

Fincher's The Social Network has a Cast

23 September 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This one can't fail.

West Wing scribe Aaron Sorkin has turned one of the strangest success stories of recent times, the founding of Facebook and its subsequent fallout, into a film to be directed by David Fincher.

Resurrect Jimmy Stewart and get him to lead the film and you've got pretty much my ultimate cinematic line-up.

Taking the story of Facebook founders through the turbulent highs and lows, whose success we are all familiar with, and making a complex character-driven drama is Sorkin's forte, not so for Fincher, whose previous films have been incredibly stylistic and powerful - it'll be interesting to see if he will use his experience on Zodiac to bring this real and human story to the screen.

Variety are reporting tonight (via AICN) that Fincher now has his cast. »

Spielberg’s Lincoln Lives, Redford’s Adds Two

20 September 2009 12:18 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Steven Spielberg insists his biopic of Abraham Lincoln is not finished even as Robert Redford gears up his film about the presidential assassination conspiracy.

Spielberg has been trying to bring his Honest Abe film to the screen since 2001, even casting Liam Neeson in the lead about four years ago.  The biopic was intended to focus on the President’s handling of the Civil War and end with a John Wilkes Booth bullet, but it was sidelined by budget and location problems and Spielberg has moved on to several other projects.

The prolific filmmaker is currently working on a remake of Harvey and eying Robert Downey Jr. for the lead (Elwood P. Dowd, originally played by Jimmy Stewart).

Meanwhile, James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn have joined The Conspirator, a period drama focused on the aftermath of Lincoln’s death.  The production starts shooting next month, so it will clearly be »

Robert Downey Jr. Might Be in Steven Spielberg's Harvey

15 September 2009 4:40 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Earlier today we keyed you in on the status of Steven Spielberg's forthcoming Abraham Lincoln biopic, but there was a tidbit of information hidden within that same Variety update that otherwise might have gotten overlooked. Apparently Robert Downey Jr. might be the top contender to fill the lead role in Spielberg's remake of the 1950 Jimmy Stewart film Harvey. In a fleeting mention the article simply says: "Spielberg is presently focusing on his 'reimagining' of Harvey, with Robert Downey Jr. possibly playing the man who sees an invisible rabbit." Blink and you could've missed it. Thankfully we've brought it to your attention. Much of the talk about who would fill Jimmy Stewart's shoes for this contemporary Harvey immediately focused on an actor who has been referred to as our generations' Jimmy Stewart. That actor is Tom Hanks. But Variety has said that the correlation between Hanks and Stewart is »
