Loren Christens New Ship

13 July 2009 12:16 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Italian movie icon Sophia Loren helped to christen a new cruise ship in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday by smashing a bottle of champagne against the vessel's bow.

The actress was a guest of honour at the Msc Splendida celebrations, along with oprah singer Jose Carreras.

It's not the first time Loren's bottle-breaking expertise has been called upon - she also christened the Msc Poesia last year when it was launched in the U.K.

The Splendida departed for its maiden cruise on Monday afternoon, when it embarked on a round trip with stops in Tunisia, Malta, Italy and France.

20 Most Anticipated Movies Still to Come In 2009

9 July 2009 2:33 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

20 Most Anticipated Movies Still to Come In 2009 At the beginning of the year I made a list of my Top 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2009. Of that list I have now seen five of them. Nine out of the remaining ten made this list as I bumped Alejandro Amenabar's Agora since it has still yet to get picked up by a distributor due to rather weak reactions out of the Cannes Film Festival. However, a few films have made their way onto this list thanks to strong film festival reactions as I have put together a list of 20 films to look forward to as we move into the final six months of 2009. One film I didn't include merely because it is coming out next week and I felt it would be a wasted space is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I am undoubtedly anticipating seeing it and had it been

Movie Math: Does Nine Equal 8½?

7 July 2009 2:20 PM, PDT | From E! Online | See recent E! Online news

Channeling Italian cinema master Federico Fellini's penchant for psychedelic fantasies, antic narcissism and eye-popping set pieces, director Rob Marshall (Chicago) seems to be pulling out all the stops. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Italian director Guido Contini, with a cast that includes Sophia Loren as Guido's hot momma, not to mention a bevvy of babes, including Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz and Judi Dench. It definitely looks spectacular, dare we say Fellini-esque. But what do you think? Could Nine end up being as endearingly over the top as Fellini's classic 8½?

Reed’s Bargain Bin: S1m0ne

6 July 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Despite the clever title and participation of Al Pacino, S1m0ne did not receive much attention from critics or movie theatre audiences when it came out in 2002. The director, Andrew Niccol, had some acclaim as a result of having directed Gattaca (a smart science fiction film about a physically defective human in a genetically manipulated world) and having written The Truman Show (a smart allegorical film about a man who's oblivious to the fact that his life has been manufactured for the purposes of a television show). S1m0ne also has a high concept idea behind it: a movie director creates a computer generated actor who becomes a star while only he knows that the actor is computer generated. I think I’ve had

A Bizarre Moment of Oscar Trivia with Kyra Sedgwick

9 June 2009 9:09 PM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

Congratulations to Kyra Sedgwick who just got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Remember when it looked for a millisecond like she might get an Oscar nod for playing Julia Robert's sassy sister in Something to Talk About back in 1995? Stealing scenes from Julia might seem like a hard thing to do and commendable, too, but it pisses Academy voters right off. One must not pull focus from their Pretty Woman!

Future Julia Roberts co-stars consider yourself forewarned! If you steal a movie from the billion dollar grin, you will get media attention. You will get a Golden Globe nomination. But, come Oscar nomination morning, The Big Snub Awaits You.

King, you're one of the best!

6 June 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | From blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news

I met John McHugh in the autumn of 1966, when I was a cub reporter on the Sun-Times and he was a rewrite man, two years my senior, on the Chicago Daily News. We are still best friends. He worked the overnight shift, and among his duties was taking calls from readers. After midnight, they wanted to settle bets. "And what do you say?" McHugh would ask. He would listen, and then reply, "You're 100% correct. Put the other guy on." Pause. "And what do you say?" Pause. "You're 100% correct." If he was asked for his name, he said, "John T. Greatest, spelled with three Ts."

One night in autumn 1969 we found ourselves in the Old Town Gate, three blocks from our customary posts at O'Rourke's Pub. "I had my first job in Chicago here," he reminisced. "I invented the Roquefort Burger. Somebody ordered a cheeseburger and I, being a dumb Mick,

“Nazis. I hate these guys.”: 15 WWII Movies Worth Watching Before You See Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

26 May 2009 4:10 PM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

Who knew that the Nazis -- one of the most brutal regimes in the history of brutal regimes -- would be responsible for such fun, mind-blowingly awesome entertainment? The second I see a dude in a grey German uniform and an eye patch enter the frame, I’m like ‘Whoa. That Nazi is going to provide me a great amount of entertainment this evening’. So, with Inglorious Bastards having recently premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, I figured I'd put together a list of some awesome WW2 films as a resource for anyone wanting to beef up their WW2 film knowledge before checking out Tarantino's self-proclaimed 'masterpiece'. It's worth noting that I focused on older films -- pre-1980 for the most part -- and only the stories featuring Nazi's. It was tough to cut this down to 15 films, but I'm sure you all will be able to come up with

The story of a filmmaker and his complicated entanglements with the women in his life, it's based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical that was itself inspired by Federico Fellini's "8 1/2." The cast includes Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench and Sophia Loren -- Oscar winners all. Prestigious trailer for 'Nine' musical hits

18 May 2009 2:20 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

The first official trailer for Rob Marshall's upcoming musical "Nine" recently debuted online, and you should definitely check it out below - it looks grand. Marshall also directed the Oscar-winning musical "Chicago," which I absolutely adored. Looking at this footage, I feel this one could be bound for critical acclaim as well.

In the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway show, Daniel Day-Lewis jumps into the role of Guido Contini, a high-profile director struggling to satisfy all the women in his life, including his wife and mistress. Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Marion Cotillard, Fergie, Kate Hudson and Sophia Loren co-star. "Nine" hits Nov. 25, 2009.

Penélope Cruz Hit by Food Poisoning in Cannes

18 May 2009 10:45 AM, PDT | From PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news

Even the biggest stars aren't immune to getting hit by stomach bugs it seems. Penelope Cruz had to miss out on promoting her upcoming musical Nine in Cannes Monday, sidelined by "some sort of food poisoning." In France to premiere her movie Broken Embraces, which is directed by Pedro Almodóvar, she was slated to join movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in presenting a trailer and a teaser for Nine, but fell ill. Weinstein passed on the bad news to a select group of journalists: "Tomorrow night is her premiere for her movie. She is getting better and is seeing a doctor right now.

Nine for Nine

17 May 2009 9:50 AM, PDT | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

The first official trailer (not that blurry Et preview) has arrived for Nine the musical.

Nine Trailer from Daniel Shannon on Vimeo.

Naturally as a musical and actress nut, I'm beyond excited. It's a doubled whammy. My excitement is slightly tempered by the instant recall of that 2005 migraine known as Memoirs of a Geisha (Rob Marshall's got some atoning to do).

But it sure do look purty, don't it?

9 reasons I must see Nine right now

9. To witness the return of Sophia Loren (see previous post)

8. Because of the extreme likelihood of technical Oscar nominations. I need my own opinion on the cinematography, set, costumes, sound, editing but I can't get that until I see the damn thing. It's all about context. Especially when there's so much razzle dazzle.

7. To ogle the costuming. I'm not really one for gawking at Kate Hudson but I'm trying to be inclusive with these 9 photos.

Be Italian: Trailer for Rob Marshall's 'Nine'

15 May 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Now I know I'm not the only one who is fascinated by the prospect of watching the great Daniel Day Lewis singing and dancing in Rob Marshall's Nine. But the first trailer has been released on Apple for Marshall's adaptation of the Tony-nominated play of the same name, and if you were hoping for a glimpse of Lewis doing jazz-hands, then you're going to be disappointed. But, jazz-hands aside, after watching this trailer I think I may have to change my opinion of the directing talents of Mr. Marshall -- because Marshall's musical skills look better without Renee Zellwegger doing '3/4 shot' dance numbers while warbling her heart out.

Nine is based on the classic Fellini film, 8 1/2, and centers on the famous film director, Guido Contini. The story is set in early-1960s Venice, and on the eve of Contini's 40th birthday he is struggling to complete his latest film,
