'Twilight' and 'New Moon' star Ashley Greene as Audrey Hepburn?

11 July 2009 2:34 PM, PDT | From Twilight Examiner | See recent Twilight Examiner news

The Twilight Saga: New Moon star Ashley Greene is, at present, in Atlanta for the Salute to Twilight Convention, and the Twilight Lexicon has been hot on the trail, tweeting every time something newsworthy is said or done. Just a moment ago, Tl tweeted that during the question and answer event with Ashley Greene, she admitted that she would love to perform a role as Audrey Hepburn in a biopic. Though Jennifer Love Hewitt did so in 2000's The Audrey Hepburn Story, that was nearly ten years ago. Below is a photo slideshow of Audrey Hepburn. Reed’s Bargain Bin: S1m0ne

6 July 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | From FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Despite the clever title and participation of Al Pacino, S1m0ne did not receive much attention from critics or movie theatre audiences when it came out in 2002. The director, Andrew Niccol, had some acclaim as a result of having directed Gattaca (a smart science fiction film about a physically defective human in a genetically manipulated world) and having written The Truman Show (a smart allegorical film about a man who's oblivious to the fact that his life has been manufactured for the purposes of a television show). S1m0ne also has a high concept idea behind it: a movie director creates a computer generated actor who becomes a star while only he knows that the actor is computer generated. I think I’ve had

Streep at 60: Chamaeleonidae Erotica

Streep at 60, a retrospective (June 11th - July 14th)

I wear body armor as I type this, for fear of your collective outrage but the time got away from me. We're jumping forward. You see, Streep's second act, those legend making years from 1981-1988, in which she morphed through one of cinema's all time hot streaks like some genetically enhanced superfreak chameleon, is too large a topic. I need more time with The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Sophie's Choice (1982) and Silkwood (1983), in particular. Perhaps I should write a book. For disparate reasons all three are deserving of chapter length essays.

For now, some general observations about this time period and the first of Streep's collaborations with director Fred Schepisi (Plenty).

Chameleonidae Erotica

Streep's penchant for shape shifting, particularly in the vocal arena, is well known. Though many actors collect several character voices and accents in their life's work, the vocals became

Julia Ormond: The Hollywood Interview

Actress Julia Ormond

Julia Ormond Is “In Her Animal”

By

Alex Simon

Julia Ormond made an auspicious debut as an actress in the landmark 1989 British miniseries Traffik, on which the Oscar-wining Steven Soderbergh film was later based, playing the drug-addicted daughter of a member of Parliament. By 1994, Ormond was being touted as the next Audrey Hepburn, with her old school glamour and classically-trained acting chops, earned at London’s prestigious Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts. High-profile turns in big studio pictures like Legends of the Fall and First Knight suddenly propelled the young, working actress into superstar status, with all the baggage that accompanies that much sought-after, and ultimately regrettable moniker.

With her turn in Sydney Pollack’s ill-fated remake of Billy Wilder’s classic Sabrina, in 1995, it all seemed to turn 180 degrees for Ormond, who suddenly found herself excoriated by the press that had built her up the year before.

But slowly your eye magically lifts off their sweet embrace into the upper left hand corner. It's like your eye became the weegie board piece that has no control; lacking any control, you become fixed on the shadow that encompasses the background of the book cover. The debate rages on – were the Cullen clan of vampires dressed as they should have been in last year’s über-hit Twilight? Some critics of the big screen adaptation of the Stephenie Meyer bestseller, including star Nikki Reed (aka Rosalie Hale) argue that the fashions weren’t right, while others loved each and every outfit. Was Rosalie suitably stunning enough? Did Alice’s (Ashley Greene) passion for haute couture shine through in her boho outfits and was Emmett (Kellan Lutz) more dull jock than immaculate immortal? A: It wasn’t a meeting; it was a memo. Check your inbox.

I’ve heard two theories on the acronym change: some say the change was deliberate, to give more prominence to lesbians who – let’s face it – are too often afforded second-class status in the Glbt community. Other people have told me that in certain parts of the country Lgbt has always been the accepted moniker, and the rest of us are just … wrong.

Banned Audrey Hepburn Stamp Sells For $94,000

29 May 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | From Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news

An ultra rare stamp featuring the likeness of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys has sold to a private collector for $94,000. The stamp had been created as a tribute to the iconic actress by the German government. However, Hepburn's son refused to grant copyright permission to use his mother's image and the stamps were ordered destroyed. Only five stamps are believed to remain in existence. Ironically, the search for a rare, valuable stamp is the central plotline of Hepburn's 1963 hit Charade. For more click here

listen now [1] Download show [2] "Exqusite and with a sense of innocence, Audrey Hepburn was a rare actress for her time, compared to the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Mae West. Audrey was far from the volumptuos, typical hollywood movie star, she was a pleasant, petite woman with an enchanting Anglo-European accent, big doe-like eyes, a long swan neck, demure smile, melodious voice, charismatic manner, and perfect wardrobe. Audrey was also very modest, describing herself as an actress that didn't have much technique because she never learned to act. Her own acting technique, such as it was, simply consisted of hard work, intense concentration - and instinct. Life. Puppies. Pillows. Smiles. If you enjoy any of these things, even intermittently, you probably like at least one film starring the lovely and talented Audrey Hepburn, who was both a committed philanthropist and a consistently charming performer. Hepburn Stamp Sells For More Than Double Reserve Bid

27 May 2009 9:05 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

A rare stamp bearing the image of Audrey Hepburn smoking has gone under the hammer for an astounding $93,800 (£62,530) at an auction in Germany.

The stamp is one of only five in existence, after the tragic movie icon's son, Sean Ferrer, ordered the entire print run to be destroyed in 2001 following its commission by the German government.

Ferrer objected to the photo of his late mother being used for the stamp and refused to grant copyright because it showed her with a cigarette holder dangling from her lips.

All but a handful were salvaged from destruction - and one stamp fetched more than double its reserve bid of $41,959 (£27,972) when it went on sale on Tuesday. The buyer's identity remains anonymous.

The Breakfast at Tiffany's star lost her battle with colon cancer in 1993 at the age of 64.

Would You Pay Over $40 Grand for an Audrey Hepburn Stamp?

26 May 2009 2:02 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

I get some movie fan extravagance. Who wouldn't want an iconic piece of memorabilia from their favorite star, especially if that star has passed away? But $42,000+ for an 8-year-old stamp? Canoe reports that another Audrey Hepburn stamp is getting auctioned, and the bidding starts at $42k. Why so much for such a young stamp?

See, the German government printed millions of these stamps in 2001, as part of a series featuring stars like Chaplin, Monroe, and Garbo. But since the image is of Hepburn smoking, it hit too close to home. Her son didn't like it and refused to allow copyright. (The actress died of colon cancer in 1993.) The stamps were destroyed, but some had already been delivered to the Deutsche Post, where some of these proofs were stolen by an unknown employee who used them to send mail. I guess he/she didn't think about how rare and desired they'd be.

Rare Hepburn Stamp Goes For Sale

25 May 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

A rare stamp featuring a picture of Audrey Hepburn smoking is set to go on sale on Germany - eight years after the star's son ordered the entire print run be destroyed.

The stamps were commissioned by the German government in 2001 as part of a collection featuring portraits of stars including Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo.

But Hepburn's son, Sean Ferrer, objected to the photo of his late mother which had been used on the stamp because it showed her with a cigarette holder dangling from her lips.

He refused to grant copyright and all of the stamps were destroyed apart from 30 advanced copies which were saved from destruction by a postal employee.

One of the rare stamps - one of only five surviving copies - is now set to go under the hammer on Tuesday in Berlin, Germany. It has a reserve bid set at $41,959 (£27,972).

Hepburn died in 1993 at the age of 64.

Can Elton John become a grand-slam awards champ?

23 May 2009 4:52 PM, PDT | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

So far only 10 people have won the grand slam of showbiz peer-group prizes — the Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and Tony: Mel Brooks, John Gielgud, Whoopi Goldberg, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Marvin Hamlisch, Mike Nichols, Rita Moreno, Richard Rodgers and Jonathan Tunick. Elton John won a Tony Award for the music score to "Aida" (2000) and all of Gold Derby's award seers predict he'll pick up another for the music score to "Billy Elliot" on June 7. Having already won an Oscar for best song of 1994 ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" from "The Lion King") and five Grammys, all he'll need soon to join the grand-slam pantheon is an Emmy. He's not only eligible this year, but he's also campaigning aggressively to nab it. Elton and his partner David Furnish could win Emmys as co-producers of "Spectacle With Elvis Costello" on the Sundance Channel, which competes for best variety series. Still, equipment alone is not enough to make someone the next Steven Soderbergh. The flip side of this theory is that a low-budget, digital movie from Soderbergh does not guarantee the feature instant success.   Granted, Soderbergh is a famous, well-regarded filmmaker and it's fair to say that his profile is why people seek out "The Girlfriend Experience" in the first place. Fashion fix of the week: Kaenon Leila sunglasses from Bride Wars

20 May 2009 2:42 AM, PDT | From Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news

Why do folks always assume that by donning some sunglasses they suddenly become unidentifiable and mysterious? If anything, they look suspicious and so attract attention, especially when their sunglasses are as stylish as those sported by Kate Hudson’s Liv in girlie comedy Bride Wars, new out on DVD. At war with her best friend Emma (Anne Hathaway) for planning their weddings on the same day, the Manhattan lawyer dons the shades in her bid to sabotage Emma’s tanning session (it works, Emma ends up orange!) But forget going incognito; wear these Kaenon Leila sunglasses with pride for they are this week’s fashion fix.

Made by top eyewear brand, Kaenon Polarized, these sunglasses manage to be both incredibly comfortable to wear and effortlessly chic. With their oversized style, they are bang ontrend and radiate the retro elegance of Audrey Hepburn or Jackie O, while compromising nothing in terms of functionality.
