Douglas Helps The Homeless On Thanksgiving

26 November 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood veteran Kirk Douglas took to the streets of Los Angeles on Wednesday to serve up a Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless.

The 92 year old and his wife, Anne, joined hundreds of other volunteers at the Los Angeles Mission to dish out turkey meals to the needy, a day before the official American holiday.

Other celebrities who took part in the event include High School Musical star Corbin Bleu and Star Trek's Zoe Saldana.

Douglas and his wife, who founded the mission's Anne Douglas Center, which helps train homeless women to get them back into employment, said in a statement, "My wife has been trying to help the women that have been forced onto the streets, and she is determined to give them a better life through the Anne Douglas Center where they have programs that improve and rebuild their lives. We gladly come to serve men and women at Thanksgiving time to give them a good meal and strengthen their desire for a brighter future." »

Dirty Projectors Welcome The Roots, David Byrne To New York Show

23 November 2009 8:09 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The Dirty Projectors' four-night run in the New York City area ended Sunday evening with some help from their Dark Was the Night compatriot David Byrne and new pals the Roots, who both joined the Brooklyn fivesome on-stage to help kick out some jams.

The Roots complemented the Projectors' sound nicely, lending hard grooves to the band's already large tendency to groove hard, adding some funk to Dp's already-dense tracks. "No Intentions" included a long guitar solo by the Roots' "Captain" Kirk Douglas and ?uestlove added some awesome thump to crowd favorite "Stillness Is the Move."

But it was David Byrne's appearance on "Knotty Pine" that drew the largest chorus of praise (just like at Bonnaroo this past summer). The Dirty Projectors have always drawn some comparisons to the Talking Heads' appropriation of Afro-centric influences, and as such, Byrne's support of the Brooklyn natives has always seemed destined. »

Disney Scraps 20,000 Leagues Remake

17 November 2009 3:14 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Captain Nemo and the Nautilus will remain in dry dock indefinitely, according to a recent report from Variety. Disney's original turn at adapting Jules Verne's 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea resulted in the now-classic 1954 movie starring Kirk Douglas and James Mason, easily the most memorable of the many movie adaptations of Verne's book.

Director McG (Terminator: Salvation) announced in August that he was scouting locations for Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with Sam Worthington in mind for the lead role. Disney was planning on beginning production in February, but now those plans have been halted and McG is apparently no longer at the helm. According to the report, Captain Nemo is still a priority for Disney, along with John Carter of Mars, Tron: Legacy, and Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Just who knows how long it will be before the project begins to take shape?

Disney Deep-sixes "20,000 Leagues" Remake

16 November 2009 3:23 PM, PST | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

The original Disney version of the classic Jules Verne tale starred Kirk Douglas and James Mason.

Disney has temporarily shelved plans for a much-vaunted remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, although the studio is committed to ultimately making it. Apparently the director, McG, has withdrawn from the project, which was slated to begin shooting in February, even though no casting has been announced. By the way, what's with the name of the director? We don't mind great historical figures being referred to by one name, but McG hardly qualifies for the honor alongside Picasso and Rembrandt. In fact, his qualifications seem somewhat less impressive than those that earned Liberace a one-name monicker. For more click here »

Honorary Award recipients Roger Corman, Lauren Bacall, and Gordon Willis at the 2009 Governors Awards ceremony held at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland on Saturday, November 14. “It’s so much better … that nobody’s worrying whether 36.5 million people are watching us or 29.2,” remarked Warren Beatty, a former Irving G. Thalberg Award recipient who paid homage to this year’s Thalberg Award honoree John Calley, who, reportedly suffering from serious health issues, was unable to attend the ceremony. After Kirk Douglas declared he once unsuccessfully tried to seduce her, and Anjelica Huston praised her “steadfastness,” 85-year-old Lauren Bacall waved away an escort trying to help her get to the podium, remembered her “great love” Humphrey Bogart, her myriad leading [...] »

The Governors Awards: On the scene at Oscar's special honors

15 November 2009 5:20 PM, PST | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

It was the first big experiment of a quite experimental Oscar season, and by all accounts, it was a resounding success. Last night, for the first time in Academy Award history, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handed out their honorary awards at a separate event from their annual Academy Award ceremony. At a three-hour gala dinner in the ballroom above the Kodak Theatre, B-movie king Roger Corman (pictured, left), groundbreaking cinematographer Gordon Willis (right), and legendary screen siren Lauren Bacall (center) received honorary Oscars, and producer and studio chief John Calley was recognized with the rarely bestowed Irving G. »

This is the one Shakespeare wrote a play about and the one who Mel Gibson implied to be the bastard son of Braveheart William Wallace, thereby giving the finger to history unless Wallace's sperm could survive years past his death. That Gibson's sperm could magically endure beyond the grave is far more likely. Show me the Money | Mark Lawson

12 November 2009 1:30 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

I'm thrilled that Martin Amis's great novel is to be adapted for screen – but the omens aren't good

Having always been sceptical about television's obsession with costume drama, I've never really understood what it must be like for the admirers of Jane Austen when, every two or three weeks, as it seems, a new production of Pride and Prejudice or Emma is announced.

Yesterday, though, I experienced the combination of excitement and defensive apprehension which must affect Jane-ites when they learn that yet another young British actress is being measured for a bonnet. Martin Amis's Money, a key book for my generation of English students and fiction readers, is to be dramatised on BBC2, bringing to an end a quarter of a century of aborted attempts since its publication in 1984.

Whereas the followers of Miss Austen sit nervously in front of their sets worrying if Mr Darcy will be dashing enough, »

Arnold Schwarzenegger And Screen Legend Kirk Douglas In Today's Daily TwitPic

9 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Arnold Schwarzenegger is always going to be a movie star to me, even though the duty of governing California has kept him away from Hollywood in recent years. Here's hoping that his cameo appearance in "The Expendables" is a sign that he wants to get back to acting after he finished with politics.

He's still hooked in enough that he'll take a trip to present an award. Kirk Douglas, one of the original tough guy actors, was recently given the British Film Academy's Britannia Award, and Schwarzenegger was the one to present it to him. Douglas has been quiet in recent years, but he's also 92 years old. With classics like "Spartacus," Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" and "Gunfight at the Ok Corral" under his belt, the man has earned himself a rest, the better to observe the success of his son, Michael, and to collect lifetime achievement awards, like »

Douglas 'Touched' By Film Honour From Schwarzenegger

7 November 2009 6:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Kirk Douglas was stunned to be presented with a top movie award by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday night - because he coached the muscleman on his first ever film.

The veteran actor was handed the Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment at the 2009 BAFTA/La Britannia Awards in Los Angeles.

Douglas was touched to receive the honour from Schwarzenegger, as he has fond memories of working with the star on 1979 movie The Villain.

In a post on his personal MySpace page, Douglas writes, "Sometimes I think that if you live long enough you get all the awards. But last night was something special. I received the BAFTA/La award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment. What was special about it was that Governor Schwarzenegger drove down from Sacramento to present it to me. That was very thoughtful.

"I worked with Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first movie, The Villain. At that time, neither of us could imagine that he would become such an important movie star and then governor of California. He was a great guy back then, and he has never changed." »
