DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Matt Damon, from private campaigner to Hollywood's biggest star

9 November 2009 1:59 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports

Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.

Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

Susannah Straughan, London Correspondent

3 November 2009 2:05 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Susannah negotiated those difficult teenage years in front of a black and white TV, in the company of the inimitable Humphrey Bogart. There were many long, smoke-filled nights, punctuated by sardonic dialogue and the sound of some B-grade villain expiring in a hail of bullets. After studying law, Susannah embarked on a career in book and magazine publishing that has so far failed to make her rich or famous. But thanks to a nine-year stint at Radio Times magazine she feels certain that she has already met more than her fair share of film geeks and fan-boys. A team lunch last Christmas with film critic and football fan Barry Norman was a highlight. Movie heaven: Sunset Boulevard, The Lady Eve, The Big Sleep, La Confidential, The Graduate, Chinatown, All about My Mother. I could go on . . . This Is It Movie Review

30 October 2009 6:39 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Here now, a brief four months after his untimely death, is the vindication that Michael Jackson’s fans have been waiting for. This Is It, for better or worse, is the last word on Jackson as a performer and it’s presented here as the ‘dream’ of a concert that no one will ever get to see. It has been assembled from more than 100 hours of footage and pieced together with the oversight of the Jackson estate and the concert’s director, Kenny Ortega.

As someone who was never truly drawn in by Jackson’s celebrity, or the unsavory fashion in which the media dealt with him, I walked away from This Is It surprised and pleased. Whatever else he had been or done in the last 15 years or so, Ortega’s chronicle of Michael’s final endeavor places him back in the role he was always most suited to: entertainer. »

The stars are not too visible in the skyscraper lit skies of Chicago – instead, they are glowing at the 45th annual Chicago International Film Festival.

On Thursday, Uma Thurman was in town to promote her film Motherhood, which opened the festival. On Friday night, super-action director John Woo walked the red carpet at the festival for the United States premiere of his Chinese epic, Red Cliff. The film was met with resounding applause, followed by an excited Q&A from the audience afterward (I will have a review of Red Cliff available in the near future).

Released in China as two movies and condensed to one for American audiences, Red Cliff is an epic war film about the end of the Han Dynasty, and the fight by Liu Bei and Sun Quan to remain free from the order »

Viff 2009: 'Empire State Building Murders'

3 October 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Based almost entirely on found footage — and a clever script to thread that footage together — Empire State Building Murders is a loving tribute to classic Hollywood films.

French director William Karel, who co-wrote the script with Jerome Charyn, has crafted a film in which they've pulled footage from classic films and edited them together to tell a completely original story.

It's a mashup, a remix of some of the best gangster and noir films from the '30s, '40s and '50s. "Starring" Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall and James Cagney as the main players in a love triangle set in post-Second World War New York, when the movies of the time would have us believe the Mob was in complete control.

Douglas is the face of Jim Kowalski, a former New York cop who receives a letter addressed to him but postmarked Aug. 17, 1949, some 60 years earlier, that has been »

Votd: 1937 Warner Bros Blooper Reel

29 September 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Almost every DVD features a blooper reel, containing all the outtakes from a particular film. Before DVD. Recently, Tropic Thunder released three full 10-minute mags of outtakes on DVD. But it wasn't always this way. I remember that in the age of VHS, ABC would host television specials a couple times a year featuring all the Hollywood bloopers. Back in the 1930's, Warner Bros would release a yearly collection of "Breakdowns," which would air between double features. A while ago, Go Into The Story posted a Warner Bros Blooper Reel from 1937. It's amazing how different bloopers were back in the earlier days of Hollywood. The "Breakdowns of 1936" features Humphrey Bogart, George Brent, Bette Davis, Glenda Farrell, Errol Flynn, Dick Foran, Kay Francis, Hugh Herbert, Allen Jenkins, Boris Karloff, Barton MacLane, Pat O'Brien, Dick Powell, and Claude Rains. Who Wants More Noir? Columbia's B-Movies Hit The Roxie

17 September 2009 12:56 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

More good news for my favorite film genre! Back in May, I attended and wrote about the great “I Wake Up Dreaming” noir film festival at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater, hosted by Elliot Lavine. Showcasing old and rare B-movies from the 30s to the 50s, the festival was so successful that it was extended for another week.

Consider this a further extension two changing seasons later, as starting this Thursday Mr. Lavine will once again bring 22 rare noir gems to the Roxie for two weeks of betrayals, knife-sharp suspense and treacherous women.

This time around, the films are newly restored 35mm archive prints from Columbia Pictures—directed by acclaimed directors like Nicholas Ray, Fritz Lang, Samuel Fuller, Don Siegel, and king of gimmicks William Castle. As with “I Wake Up Dreaming,” the films are shown as double features: two films for $11.

This collection offers a couple of noir-horror hybrid, »

"The Look" Gets the Gold

13 September 2009 1:41 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Some people are never down for the count. And Lauren Bacall is one of those people. The famously silver tongued siren began bewitching moviegoers when she was only 19 -- surely the most mature teenager the screen ever saw -- in To Have and Have Not (1944). Aside from a fallow 1970s, she's been working steadily since. In all that time she's never learned to hold her tongue (so many choice soundbites over the years, god bless) and she's still a lively soul at 84 going on 85. Her birthday is next week.

When she lost her only Oscar nomination (1996's The Mirror Has Two Faces) to Juliette Binoche in The English Patient, most assumed that she would be of the Have Not variety when it came to the statue, despite her marriages to two legendary Haves, Oscar winners Humphrey Bogart and Jason Robards. But now, the wait for her very own golden boy is over. »

Bacall, Corman, Gordon Willis Earn Honorary Oscars

13 September 2009 3:15 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

This year's list of honorary Oscar recipients has been announced, and it's a varied list, but I don't think you can argue against any of the picks. Lauren Bacall, one of the most legendary film noir actresses who has remained active into her 80s, will be honored by the Board of Governors at next year's Academy Awards.

Joining Bacall, who co-starred with her future husband Humphrey Bogart in several mysteries of the 1940s, will be the one and only Roger Corman. Now, if you only know Corman as a director and producer of low-budget B-movies, you should be hipped to the fact that Corman is the root of one of the most significant family trees in movie history. He's influential in starting the careers of Coppola, Scorsese, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, Curtis Hanson, Nicolas Roeg, and John Sayles, among others. On Thursday evening (September 3), during a private ceremony for family and close friends, Michael Jackson was laid to rest at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, inside an enormous structure called the Great Mausoleum.

The building's architectural design was inspired by the Campo Santo in Italy, an elaborate cemetery constructed in the 13th century and used as a burial ground for Italian elites for hundreds of years. The Great Mausoleum has been called the "New World's Westminster Abbey" by Time magazine, according to Forest Lawn's Web site.
