Christmas TV movies have lost their special glitter | Jason Solomons

2 hours ago | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

A festive treat has become tired repeats or cartoons. Jason Solomons suggests it should now be a season for Fellini or Renoir

Forget about Christmas movies with snow and tinsel and grumpy fathers learning lessons. Those have their place, and no doubt we'll have our fill of them, good and bad, over the coming month, from Elf to Scrooged, from The Muppet Christmas Carol to Miracle on 34th Street.

What worries me is the lack of new classics. Growing up, my favourite Christmas movies were never the ones actually about Christmas. Rather, it was the season of Billy Wilder and Fred Astaire, a time for The Great Escape and The Towering Inferno, for The Poseidon Adventure and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In short, Christmas was when you learned about film, its rich history and capacity to thrill and unite.

It was when I watched films with my dad »

Say Goodbye to Adrian Monk This Friday

3 December 2009 5:49 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

After eight successful season, neurotic detective Adrian Monk, so expertly played by Tony Shahloub, is turning in his hand wipes.  Monk represents one of the first times USA Networks developed their own, original content, a game they've gone on to perfect with several hit series, all of which owe some debt of gratitude to Andy Breckman's creation.  And while we may be sad to see Mr. Monk, Ms. Teeger, Captain Stottlemeyer and Randy disappear from the airwaves fly off into syndication, we can be grateful that, unlike so many television series, they decided when it was time to go.  They were not forced out or given an ultimatum.  Rather, it was time to give Monk some closure and allowed the pained detective to unravel the mystery of who killed his wife - and why. If you've found yourself lax in keeping up with the final series, you can still brush up and be ready for Friday »

Box sets for Christmas | Gift ideas

28 November 2009 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Stumped for what to buy your friends and family this year? Forget the socks and chocs and bubble bath – our critics have chosen 40 of the best music, film and TV box sets

Pop by Kitty Empire

1 The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set (Parlophone)

At £145, the Beatles box set probably costs roughly what a small car did in the early 1960s. But the startling detail on these CDs will repay the outlay for Beatles nerds and mere mortals alike. Its sister release, The Beatles in Mono – 1960s scooter prices, at a guess – is even more desirable, audiophiles reckon.

2 Kraftwerk The Catalogue (Mute/Emi)

Eight albums by the electronic Beatles, dating from 1974's Autobahn, all gleamingly remastered. Costing considerably less than one of Ralf Hütter's beloved bicycles, this is the master text of most electronic genres – electro, techno, even hip-hop – today.

Movies I Saw as a Kid (That I Shouldn't Have)

17 November 2009 2:00 AM, PST | Momlogic | See recent Momlogic news »

C'mon, tell the truth ... have you ever taken your kids to an inappropriate movie?

Paul Starke: I was flipping through the channels this weekend, pretending to listen to my wife, when I stumbled upon the movie "Kramer vs. Kramer" -- the 1979 film that chronicles the bitter custody battle between Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) and ... Kramer (Meryl Streep). I happened upon the scene in the movie where Dustin Hoffman's son falls off a jungle gym and is rushed to a hospital ... Pretty dramatic, depressing material. And then, as if suddenly recalling a repressed dream, I remembered: My parents took me to see this movie when I Was 6 Years Old!

Times were different back then -- parents would go see whatever movie they wanted, whether it would interest the kids or not. I don't think my parents thought I'd enjoy it, per se -- they probably just thought I'd get bored and fall asleep. »

Scenes We Love: The Band Wagon

13 November 2009 3:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We have television to thank for a serious dance renaissance. TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars have introduced a new generation to the joys of the samba, the waltz, and the quickstep, while High School Musical (and now, Glee) brought song-and-dance production numbers back into vogue. Suddenly it seems like the world's gone dance crazy. Of course, geeks like me, who grew up watching the great movie musicals, have been dance crazy for most of our lives.

On this week's episode of Sytycd, show producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe lectured a pair of dancers about the importance of telling a story through choreography, instructing them that technical proficiency isn't enough --the audience wants to understand who the characters are, what the relationship is, and what they're trying to convey. Well, if he'd wanted to illustrate that concept, Lythgoe could do worse than to »

Scorsese to Receive Honorary Golden Globe

The Hollywood Foreign Press will bestow its honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award to Martin Scorsese during the Golden Globes on January 17, according to Variety.

Scorsese, who is a few days from his 67th birthday, is responsible for several movies legendary for their gritty, sometimes expressionistic, portrayals of violence. These include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and GoodFellas.

He also crafted many underrated gems that explored various social and cultural issues. These include The King of Comedy (the obsessions of celebrity culture), The Last Temptation of Christ (a non-Gospel, first-person telling of Jesus's internal struggle), Kundun (the life of the Dalai Lama), and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (the trials of single-motherhood).

The DeMille Award recognizes the lifetime achievement of various actors and directors. Recent recipients include Steven Spielberg, Robin Williams, and Al Pacino. Earlier recipients include Walt Disney, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, and Alfred Hitchcock, among others. You can »

Kenny Ortega says Michael Jackson didn't eat enough

27 October 2009 1:22 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Michael Jackson's choreographer doesn't believe the singer ate enough.

Kenny Ortega, who choreographed Michael's 50 sold-out London comeback shows, has revealed he tried to make the late pop star eat more during rehearsals.

He said: "I wished he would have eaten more. I was always making sure there was plenty of food around. I would unwrap his plate and slide it over in front of him. But I didn't feed him."

However, Kenny denies Michael - who was taking several different prescription drugs at the time of his death in June, and was ruled to have passed away from acute Propofol intoxication - was too frail to mount a comeback on such a huge scale.

Kenny told a British newspaper: "Look at photographs of Fred Astaire at the height of his career. They're the spitting image."

Exclusive: Forget the Romance, Stick to Fighting, Fans Tell John Woo

22 October 2009 9:10 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Hard Boiled director John Woo told us he would like to make a romantic movie, but that's not what his fans want from him. Among his many avid followers, Woo counts noted directors Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino,

Woo's latest epic, which opens in limited release November 18th, shouldn't dissapoint. Billed as the most-expensive production in the history of Asian movies, Red Cliff features thousands of extras in its battle sequences. The movie tells the legendary story of the final bloody days of the Han Dynasty in A.D. 220.

The famed action master loves old Hollywood musicals, especially those featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Woo revealed during the taping of an episode of The Charlie Rose Show, set to air closer to the movie's release, that his balletic war scenes are actually choreographed with those classic musicals in mind.

"Project Runway" 6.7 Recap: "The Sky is the Limit"

2 October 2009 1:18 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Warning, spoilers ahead! Read no further if you don't want to know what happened on last night's Project Runway.

Phew! That was ... close.

With only two members of "Team Gay" left, I was terrified my words from earlier this week were going to come back to haunt me. In my The Amazing Race recap , I wrote "recapping a show because of a gay contestant can be a dicey situation. Frequently he'll turn out to be an asshat, which means we're stuck with recapping an asshat's adventures until he's eliminated from the show."

My friends, we were this close to having to recap the solo gay adventures of this asshat.

This week's challenge is to create a design in blue for a major department store (I think it was Macy's, but I'm not sure. They only mentioned the name ... once or twice).

Kathy Ireland Calls 'Dancing with the Stars' Experience a Miracle, Thanks Liz Taylor

30 September 2009 5:03 PM, PDT | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Ok, we all know Kathy Ireland's religious (after their salsa last week, she said "All things are possible with God" right after Bruno pointed out that there was an utter lack of sex in the salsa). Talking about their departure from Dancing with the Stars, the former model said her stint on the ABC show, albeit a very brief one, was "a miracle."

"It's been such a blessing, the entire experience. I'm surprised that I was able to get on the dance floor in the first place. It was a miracle," Ireland told Chris Cuomo on Good Morning America, adding that it was partner Tony Dovolani who was able to teach her "grace and elegance" - and she also called Tony "the Fred Astaire of our generation," something I'm not sure he'll appreciate.

Singer predicts, 'I'm going to win 'Dancing With the Stars.' '

If Monday night's episode of "Dancing With the Stars" proves anything, it's that Aaron Carter and his professional dance partner Karina Smirnoff have the chops and the chemistry to make it pretty far in the competition. Their Muppet-themed tango routine earned the pair a score of 27 out of 30.

And they were praised accordingly by the judges. Bruno Tonioli declared the routine, "Spectacular, spectacular!" adding that Carter is "a mini-Fred Astaire." Judge Carrie Ann Inaba said the performance was "truly a pleasure" and that it had "great pizzazz." And the guest judge for the night, "Moulin Rouge" director Baz Luhrmann, said the couple was "clever and inventive.

All this praise may be why Carter thinks he has a shot at winning the dance competition. »

Recap: Jive, Tango and Quickstep on 'Dancing with the Stars'

Head judge Len Goodman was absent in the second week of "Dancing with the Stars" this season but the execs brought in Baz Luhrmann aka the director of musical hit movie "Moulin Rogue!". The substitution resulted in generous amount of 9s being drawn out from under the table. Aaron Carter and Mya each scored the triple 9 in their respective performances.

The first couple to take the stage on Monday, September 28 was Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough who did the Jive. Carrie immediately made a comment about Joanna's huge hair and her lack in footwork department. Bruno said they need to be exact with Jive and that Joanna lost rhythm sometime. Baz said they have to show more of the relationship because they got great chemistry. Score: 6-7-7, a total 20 out of 30.

Next, Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo did the Quickstep and the swimmer was told to loosen up a »

Hello my friends, I hope you all had a great week ... we are only days away from the premiere of the show. I am extremely excited and nervous. For the last month, I’ve been getting up early every day and studying some of the greats like Fred Astaire, Michael Jackson, and Steve-o. At first I thought, how hard can this be? Edyta drags me around, the judges vote, I make a joke about how tan my dad is ... and then I go back and cry in my dressing room. I have realized it is much more than that. Dancing is an expression of life, and I am living it to the fullest through this experience. It is challenging on all three levels, physically, mentally, and emotionally. The true challenge lies in how fast we have to learn how to dance. It takes humongous discipline to stay out of your »

DVD Playhouse—August 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—Director’S Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »
