The Bodyguard, a long-shelved script by Lawrence Kasdan (so long shelved it once was rumored to be a vehicle for Steve McQueen and Diana Ross), opens on November 25th and turns into one of the surprise hits of the year. It stars Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, and the latter reaps the benefits from the soundtrack and single sales of her cover of the Dolly Parton song, "I Will Always Love You," all the way into '93. Houston's choice to star in the film puts on hold -- once again -- a movie version of the Broadway hit Dreamgirls, now scheduled for a 2006 release. Johnny Carson's last show on May 22nd leaves a power vacuum which then turns into a power struggle, largely between David Letterman and Jay Leno. But everyone assumes they can be the next "King of Late Night." In the aftermath, Arsenio Hall, whose talk show gets some early buzz for Fox, appears on the cover of Entertainment Weekly with the quote, "I'm Gonna Kick Leno's Ass" next to him. Hall's show is cancelled two years later. MTV's The Real World proves the viability of reality-based television based on forced or constructed personal conflicts and a format borrowed from documentaries of addressing the camera. Miramax runs a brilliant marketing campaign for the secret contained within The Crying Game. Their tagline in America is "The movie everyone is talking about... But no one is giving away its secrets." The film is an indie smash. The last episode of The Cosby Show airs on April 30th. The Mighty Ducks, starring Emilio Estevez, is a mid-level hit for Disney. The sleeper becomes part of the company's synergistic corporate strategy as they also found a National Hockey League squad, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the same year. Disney sells the franchise in 2005. |

A fourth-billed Emma Thompson wins the Best Actress Oscar for Howards End, and her marriage to fellow distinguished Brit Kenneth Branagh is marked by their frequent collaborations, spawning the following joke -- Emma: "Hi darling, I'm home!" Kenneth: "I'm in the kitchen." Emma: "Ooh, can I be in it too?" They divorce in 1995.
Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs debuts to much acclaim (and protest) at the Sundance Film Festival. Although it's nominated for a Grand Jury prize, that award goes to Alexandre Rockwell's In the Soup.
Cameron Crowe's Singles, a film about romance in Seattle, appears as the Seattle-grunge scene reaches national recognition. Unfortunately it doesn't do a lot for the film, which does middling business.
After recent disappointments such as Another 48 Hrs and Harlem Nights, Eddie Murphy bets that his two 1992 releases, Boomerang and The Distinguished Gentlemen, will put him back on top. He has to wait four more years for 1996's The Nutty Professor to see his star rise again.
Brooklyn-born Marisa Tomei waltzes away with My Cousin Vinny tucked into the décolletage of her skin-tight outfit. Her comic performance bests acclaimed turns by distinguished actresses Judy Davis, Joan Plowright, Vanessa Redgrave, and Miranda Richardson for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, which spawns a rumor (completely debunked later) that she was given the award in error. Presenter Jack Palance, whom, a year earlier had done one-armed push-ups during the award show to show his virility, purportedly misread the winner's name on the card.
Robert Altman's The Player gleefully skewers the Hollywood production process, and screenwriters everywhere start warily looking over their shoulders. The film earns back its costs within the first month. Ironically, one of the Hollywood-isms lampooned in the film is the pitch of an unbelievable project, The Graduate II, an update to the classic Mike Nichols film, but set 25 years later (Buck Henry is the one who proposes it). Just such a film, Rumor Has It, releases this December, starring Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, and Shirley MacLaine.
Jack Nicholson bellows "You can't handle the truth!" to a startled Tom Cruise in A Few Good Men, which is scripted by a little-known playwright by the name of Aaron Sorkin.
The law firm of Masry & Vititoe files a class-action lawsuit against Pacific Gas & Electric Company, resulting in a $333 million dollar settlement and a movie eight years later called Erin Brockovich.
Freddie Highmore is born.
