| Notes: | - The Mar del Plata International Film Festival is still the most relevant competitive festival in the continent. Its audience average is 150,000 spectators. Producers, exhibitors, distributors and journalists from all over the world meet there, contributing to the global promotion of the event and the films. (from the festival's web site, as of 2002)
- The first festival took place in 1954, but was a non-competitive event. The second festival was held in 1959 and was by then recognized by the FIAPF as an international, competitive event.
- There were no festivals taking place in 1967 and 1969 when the event alternated with the Rio de Janeiro festival, because the FIAPF ruled that the two South American festivals should do so.
- During the period of military government the festival was suspended and ended its stage with its eleventh event in 1970. On several occasions, attempts were made to reinstate this film fest, but, for political and economic reasons, the Mar del Plata Festival vanished for 25 years until it was revived in 1996.
