RATING (0 TO ****): *

"Is this really true? Can cold objectivity be a point of view?" a woman known only as "She" (Joan Allen) asks rhetorically in YES. She is a married woman having an affair with a guy known only as "He" (Simon Abkarian), an Arab-American in a film designed by writer and director Sally Potter (THE TANGO LESSON) to "respond to the rapid demonization of the Arabic world" in the post 9-11 era. This pretentious picture, which is told mainly in a mumbling rhyme and plays like a Dr. Seuss parody of an art house flick, also has a brief and glowing homage to Cuba's old fashioned style of communism. When He claims, in some pretty awkward rhymes, that America's response since 9-11 has been all about the U.S. wanting Arab oil, She responds that she shouldn't be blamed because she didn't support the American government, and besides she is half Irish. The film also features some of the most seasick cinematography that you will ever see on land.

YES runs a tedious 1:35. It is rated R for "language and some sexual content" and would be acceptable for teenagers.

The movie played as part of the 48th annual San Francisco International Film Festival (http://www.sfiff.org), which ran April 21 to May 5, 2005.
