IMPULSE

RATING (0 TO ****): *** 1/2

"Remember kids, shoot video not guns," admonishes Evan (Shawn Belyea), the host of the hard-hitting reality television show, "That's Reality." Evan, who loves to show clips of deaths and other videos that most news programs won't touch, has the credo of "video equals truth."

His local show, however, is now history. He has closed it down and is in the final boarding stages of a deal which will put his program into national syndication. In order to celebrate and to take a well earned rest, Evan and his wife Carla (Amy Leone Walton) have rented a ocean-front beach house for the weekend. Joining them are their best friends, Richard (Tony Doupe), the show's financial backer, and Laura (Debra Pralle), Richard's wife and a well-known television news reporter.

IMPULSE, sharply written and directed by Matt Lopin, will remind you of another dark drama, CLOSER. The difference, thanks to four fine performances and the aforementioned great script, is that IMPULSE is better and much more realistic than CLOSER. When the lights come up, your reaction is liable to be "Wow!"

IMPULSE runs 1:29.

The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
