RATING (0 TO ****): **

With enough material for a nice short, Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau's SIDE EFFECTS is stretched past the breaking point at ninety-nine minutes. Set at the time when the "blockbuster drug of the century" is about to be released, it follows Karly Hert (Katherine Heigl), a brand new drug rep, who'll be trying to sell the aforementioned drug to physicians.

At first the klutzy Karly, who dresses too casually for her job, is an absolute disaster. She falls for a fellow rep, who quits after just a single week on the job. He plans on building his dream house with his ten years worth of savings. She decides that, after six months, she'll quit her job too and live with him. How they plan on paying for their retirement at such an early age isn't discussed.

As luck would have it, she suddenly becomes a big success, which goes to her head quickly. Her secret is that she starts telling the doctors the complete truth about her company's drugs, which bonds her with them.

Is there anyone who can't figure out how this story will end? The title, of course, provides an obvious hint.

SIDE EFFECTS runs 1:39.

The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
