THE FITTEST
A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): ** 1/2
THE FITTEST, as in the survival of the fittest, is one of those films that is funnier than it has any right to be. The acting in this sexual farce, which never reaches the believability stage, can be quite amateurish at times, but the film is always cute and sometimes downright hilarious.
Something of an upbeat version of IN THE COMPANY OF MEN, it features a wimp of a guy named Freddy (Jason Madera) who has "defective sperm," meaning that he and his wife Grace (Angela Grant) haven't been able to have the kids they want. Lately Grace has lost all interest in sex with her husband.
Freddy, however, is very interested in sex, especially with Jill (Christina Caparoula), the sexpot secretary at the tire company where he works. Freddy's obnoxious boss, a mean-spirited playboy named Al (Josh Crook), is currently "banging" Jill and bragging about it crudely. Al uses sex as a way to demean others. Although Freddy might seem to have no chance with a woman as hot as Jill, he is about to be surprised in more ways than one. And THE FITTEST is filled with humorously implausible moments, which surprise the audience.
THE FITTEST runs 1:28.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
