RATING (0 TO ****): * 1/2

A frequent complaint that I have regarding movies about music makers is that there just isn't enough music in them. This is not an argument which you will find me making about Stefan Schwietert's ACCORDION TRIBE, a migraine-inducing movie for hard-core accordion music lovers only.

I love documentaries about obscure instruments and subjects, with THEREMIN: AN ELECTRONIC ODYSSEY about the theremin being one of my favorites. But ACCORDION TRIBE, about a musical tour of five accordion player/composers, gave me little to enjoy. If there had been more tunes I had heard before or if the movie had found interesting things to tell us about the world of accordion music, I would have had a much better time. About the only part of the production I ever enjoyed was the opportunity it afforded me to brush up on my German again. Oh yes, and the peace of mind I got when I left the theater.

ACCORDION TRIBE runs 1:27. The film is in German with English subtitles and in English.

The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
