HOME A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): **
"Make the point, Josh. Make the point. Make the point. What's the point?" is one of the longest dialog segments in Matt Seitz's HOME, a movie that suffers the fairly unique problem of being too realistic. About four dozen twentysomething singles who squeeze into a few small rooms in a house among Brooklyn's brownstones, the conversations are as superficial as superficial can be. Few points are made, and, even when they are, the party is too noisy and crowded for most of the partygoers to hear them. Yes, just like a real party under such circumstances. Real, but not interesting.
The people are mostly attractive, and the acting is credible, but the story goes absolutely nowhere, much as would be the case in conversations in a party like this. Finally, as people begin to leave, the comprehension and the intelligence level of the dialog rises noticeably. If the rest of the film was at the level of the last act, it would be worth recommending.
HOME runs 1:35.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
