I, CURMUDGEON A film review by Steve Rhodes
Copyright 2005 Steve Rhodes
RATING (0 TO ****): ***
I'm here to lay it on the line. If you see I, CURMUDGEON and don't like it like I did, then you are a stupid ignoramus, an idiotic moviegoer who is so blind to good cinema that you should be forever banned from the theaters.
I, CURMUDGEON celebrates those who dare speak their minds, no matter how cruel or hurtful others may perceive the thoughts being expressed. You know them. They are the outspoken people, the loudmouths who can be found in every office and at every party. The ones who are incapable of not pointing out that the emperor has no clothes.
In I, CURMUDGEON, Alan Zweig goes in search of fellow naysayers like himself. But be careful. This highly entertaining documentary will have you falling for these masters of gloom and laughing with them rather than being repulsed by them.
Even though one of them remarks that, when he enters a room of strangers, ten people instantly hate him, I'll bet you find his negative charisma charming. These negativists talk about how society, especially American society, is raised on a diet of happy endings and a belief that, no matter how bad things are, everything "will be okay."
One guy describes their affliction best when he remarks that he is "cursed with the ability to see through the hypocrisy." And, of course, curmudgeons, once they see something they don't like, are unable to resist sharing their negative comments with everyone within earshot.
Now, don't do something really stupid like missing this documentary.
I, CURMUDGEON runs 1:36.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
