THE WORKS A film review by Steve Rhodes
Copyright 2005 Steve Rhodes
RATING (0 TO ****): ** 1/2
After a recent move of his company's offices, Victor (Joe W. Anthony) finds that his new office location is in quite a bit less desirable location than his old office. Although one of his fellow employee remarks about how much space his new office has, Victor just can't abide having an office in the men's room.
Hating his job, he decides to quit, but his resignation letter is referred to a Resignation Committee, which, while commenting favorably on his letter's grammar, style and brevity, isn't able to let him go since he signed an employment contract. In fact, since he didn't exercise his recent option out, it has been automatically renewed for another five years.
Gal Katzir's THE WORKS is a funny farce that blends equal measures of OFFICE SPACE and BRAZIL with a small dash of MR. ROBERTS. Newcomer Danielle Taddei, who looks like a young Jennifer Beals, plays Eve, the building's plumber and a potential love interest for Victor. She keeps warning everyone that the building is about to blow, but no one will pay her any attention. THE WORKS has a relatively small number of ideas from which it attempts to get the most mileage it can.
THE WORKS runs 1:31.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
