WARSAW A film review by Steve Rhodes

RATING (0 TO ****): **
"I'd like to do something big. Just big," the guy tells the girl who is catching a ride with him in WARSAW (WARSZAWA). "Wash an elephant?" she asks.
Dariusz Gajewski's WARSAW is one of those movies with about a half dozen parallel stories. I'm sure that some screenwriters, using this type of structure, think they are being clever in trying to make all of the characters work and make the plot come together in some big ending coincidence. But for me, it usually just seems like an easy way out, since it means that the writers don't have to develop any of the characters to any depth.
In WARSAW, a series of characters are making their way into central Warsaw on an extremely cold day with heavy snow. Most of the relationships are as cold and frozen as the air they breathe. The best of these is a man who is going in search of his long lost daughter. What works about this story thread is what happens when he finally finds her. Most of the paper-thin characters aren't worth your consideration.
WARSAW runs 1:50. The film is in Polish with English subtitles.
The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
