BUTTERFLY

RATING (0 TO ****): ** 1/2

To paraphrase an old rock and roll song, there's a whole lotta kissin' goin' on in BUTTERFLY (WU DIE), a lesbian love story from Hong Kong. These tongue-free smooches make for an erotic story, even if there isn't any visible nudity. The women are gorgeous and seem genuinely interested in each other, which frequently isn't the case in.

Flavia (Josie Ho) is a 30-year-old teacher with a hidden past. With a nice husband and a cute baby, Flavia is secretly bisexual, having slept with a girl for the first time when she was thirteen. Some of her old flings are shown in flashback. BUTTERFLY concerns Flavia's love affair with Yip, a girl about a decade younger whom she meets one day in a supermarket. Although Flavia has been living a strictly heterosexual life for quite some time, Yip rekindles Flavia's suppressed passions.

Although the kissing is hot, the narrative gets thinner and thinner as it goes along, making one yearn for this full length movie to have been made as a short.

BUTTERFLY runs too long at 2:04. The film is in Cantonese and Mandarin with English subtitles.

The film is being shown as part of San Jose's Cinequest Film Festival (www.Cinequest.org), which runs March 2-13, 2005.
